The Most Expensive Item in Runescape History is Out of Control!

  • The runescape party hat is by far the games most famous item. The item was obtainable only from the 2001 christmas event, and since then has become discontinued. While this has obviously led them to being rare and expensive, there may be something else causing their price ro rapidly rise.
Throughout the last 20 years party hats have gone from millions, to being worth max cash, to being worth 100's of billions of GP. Today I wanted to document the price changes over time and talk about the major events affecting the price.

I think FlippingOldschool should make a vid on the noted trouble brewing items in OSRS, they're not obtainable since July 2020, because even though you're still able to smuggle and trade trouble brewing items, you can't bank them (hence, note them) anymore. It's always been worth the same actually - the in-game prices go based on RS3 gold sale prices which are currently @ around .03 cents / mil. A blue partyhat cost around 5K USD a few years ago and it still costs around 5K. Gold has inflated in-game and devalued on the USD which is what controls the price especially considering the group that controls the supply on phats.

Everybody had one on. These bad boys were going for 2k-10k a pop beside the Varrock bank quickly for at least a couple days to a week after they dropped. They quickly increased to 15k-55k within 3-6 weeks. I kept buying and selling them as they went up and stopped caring after a little while to continue the game, so much regret lmao but I really wanted a rune 2 hander at the time and they were worth about 450-500k If I remember right. the earliest holiday item I was left with was the bunny ears or scythe which is when they began being untradable.

Some of the most iconic items in Runescape history were released decades ago now and were immediately discontinued. Considering how many people still play the game today, it’s not illogical to value these items at tens of thousands of real world dollars.

This may sound insane, I'm a software engineer not an economist but hear me out. What if one of the reasons for such a drastic decrease in the price of RS3 rares is related to crashes in other "collectible"/speculative store of value assets like trading cards, cryptocurrency, etc?
Most of these markets have been hit pretty hard over the past year or so to my knowledge. People RWT for billions of GP to buy up partyhats and such knowing the price is likely to only increase going forward, and then IRL market conditions force people to liquidate for more stable options causing the prices of these speculative assets to crash pretty hard. With the prevalence of RWT and how sophisticated OSRS RWTers have gotten, it makes a lot of sense to me. There's no way rares aren't being used as proxies for IRL cash

I used to trade it to my lvl 20 noob account to enjoy wearing in on there at times, and I would successfully trade it back and forth between accounts. My memory is kinda hazy now, but there was some kind of trade restriction that appeared suddenly (I think) and I tried to find workarounds and got away with killing my alts in clan wars on dangerous mode to transfer some items along with the hat. But then one day when I went to transfer the yellow party hat that way again, it fully disappeared. And I was in complete shock and just kinda logged out and went outside. I think they were around 1.4bil at the time. So yeah, I'm responsible for making 1 yellow party hat disappear from the game forever, lol
