    Four people fully engaged in doing a tack. And now imagine doing it all alone during the Vendee Globe in the southern ocean. Big respect to these sailors!

    Lovely. Well described and good to have Sam Davies’ expertise. I particularly liked the end section, beautifully edited!

    Maybe a bit of a weird question but: Considering that they will be transitioning into the Baltic Sea as part of the race: How does the short wave there impact the foiling capabilities of the IMOCAs? Does it help, as they can have an easier time coasting across the waves, or will it actually act as a brake?
    Curious how the dynamics and vectors will work in that region - or just generally, how the various sea states affect the boats. Would be nice to hear one of the race experts go into detail on that topic :)

    • @TheOceanRace
      @TheOceanRace  Před rokem +2

      Hi! Generally, it's the distance between the waves that makes the biggest difference. If the waves are packed together closely, the boats should be able to foil without difficulty.

    Good on you for effort I am amazed your afoat so for it I know this leg of the race over but if you make it to Newport which you will with that determantion you can still compete?

    In the old days they set up a Jury rig and use the trades. These days I guess the boats are a bit too sophisticated to use a primitive rig.

  • @christianwestling2019

    Why is there an exclusion zone along all of northern South America?

    • @eseholmes4592

      Oil, I think?

    • @nielshofkes2831
      @nielshofkes2831 Před rokem +1

      That exclusion zone covers the area where the Amazone river ends in the sea, to avoid that the boats get a collision with debris and wood flowing out of the Amazone.

    I don't know why they tried to pretend that there was any other option to retiring after losing the mast. They were never going to match up boat and mast in Brazil in time to sail to Newport. Taking the boat on a ship to Newport was the only logical way to proceed, clearly evident from the moment of the mast failing.

    • @zonzeven
      @zonzeven Před rokem

      Where did they buy the new mast ?

    • @TheOceanRace
      @TheOceanRace  Před rokem

      Hi! The IMOCA class had a spare mast in reserve, but they are all one-design but I'm sure other teams might have come to Kevin rescue, and donated a mast if it was needed.

    These boats are cute and sporty in the right conditions, but they do not seem to be sturdy enough for real ocean racing. Nor do they seem that much faster overall than the 65s. Sure wish we had both classes going head to head.

    • @TheOceanRace
      @TheOceanRace  Před rokem +1

      Hi! Easy to forget, in the last edition, we had one VO65 lose a mast, lots of sail locks failing, poles breaking, mainsail tracks ripping off and sails tearing in half. But don't worry, the VO65s will be back in the Race from Aarhus!

    • @johnmiglautsch4587
      @johnmiglautsch4587 Před rokem

      @@TheOceanRace Yes, I remember - but don't remember hulls delaminating and foils jamming. LOL though there was also a major rudder problem on one VO65.

    • @johnmiglautsch4587

      Seems like they could/should have a stay run up inside the furler like the yachties do.
