  • This is the fifteenth video in what I hope turns into a long standing series on this channel called Aircrafts Dissected, where I plan to delve into every single switch, knob and light in the aircraft and properly explain their function. This video is the eighth in the full flight portion of this series, wherein we complete a full flight with the Zibo 737-800 from KSFO (San Francisco) to KLAX (Los Angeles). In this episode, we take a detailed look at the final descent, approach and landing procedure where we incrementally descend towards KLAX through various altitude checkpoints. The entire episode is live commentated to give an authentic feel as if the viewers are sitting beside me as we fly into runway 25L and perform a precision approach using the various tools at our disposal in the 737-800. The next episode will be the final one in the 'full-flight' portion of this series, where we will go ahead and cover the taxi to our parking gate as well as the after-landing and shutdown procedure to safely disembark the passengers and finish the flight leg.

The green arc is also known as the "green banana" and is possibly one of the most important tools used during a V/S descent (non-VNAV). I use the V/S descent more often than VNAV.
The Zibo mod has a "descent" announcement on the PA page the captain makes and can be found in the EFB. In addition, there is also a PA announcement for "prepare for landing".
Rule of thumb: 200kts at 10nm, 190kts at 9nm, 180kts at 8nm, ect with final approach speed around 4nm unless ATC requires you to maintain a set airspeed until reaching a waypoint during high traffic periods.
The time from "Glideslope alive" to "Glideslope capture" is not very long so as soon as you see the solid pink diamond first appear, call "Glideslope alive" and set Flaps 15 and gear down. At glideslope capture, follow flaps according to schedule for landing flaps.
Your final approach and landing was spot on! Great job.

Great tutorials! After going in circles for a bit struggling to capture the localizer and glideslope I eventually captured it and in my excitement, forgot to deploy the landing gear. Confused out of my mind when an alarm went off, I ignored it continued to land. Once I was on the runway, I then noticed what I had done. A great laugh and a great learning opportunity for sure.

@@FlyBySimulations Hey man, just want to tell you airlines usually do continuous descents to save fuel. So they try to go down without the need to ever level off. That is the real challenge for a descent its all about managing your potential and kinetic energy. Also I saw you at 190 knots without flaps. Whenever you go below the Up speed indicator you must select flaps one the latest at that speed. Then you get the 1 bug so you must select the next flaps setting also before you get below that speed.

Yet another great job! Your videos are the only ones I "Like" before watching -- one less thing to do after I've watched it! :-) One thing I would add for those who aren't aware is that if you enable the "Hardware throttle on EICAS" option in the tablet, you can match your throttle lever position to match the current N1 value so that there is no sudden increase or decrease in power when the autothrottle is disengaged.

I don't have enough words to thank you for the full description of every tiny detail in this gorgeous and beautiful plane. I have watched the entire series and I must say, the last episode felt like a bittersweet finale of a good TV show, where you'd feel slightly sad you won't see the same setting ever again. Great it's not the case with your channel though!
So far, I'm managing cold&dark start up procedures, taxiing, take off and cruise flight pretty well, only because your video encyclopedia is always there when I need it. And big thanks for having it in a pdf file as well!
However, I'm a bit lost with programming FMC for takeoffs and landings with airports that do not have SID/STAR procedures (or when these procedures don't have transitions). Discrepancies keep showing up. Besides, if there is no STAR procedure, how would one get to a point from which to capture g/s and loc and switch from vnav/lnav to approach mode on mcp?
    Best wishes,
    Oleg

    • @FlyBySimulations
      @FlyBySimulations  Před 3 lety +2

Thank you so much for the support:) I can surely make a short video about the topic, but the distinction between the use of both buttons is actually quite simple. During an ILS landing (which is what I'm assuming you're asking about as that's the standard landing procedure that most beginners perform on airliners), the VOR LOC button can be used to simply intercept the localizer (the lateral portion of the ILS beacon). If for example, you're shooting a straight in approach to a runway from a considerable distance and altitude wherein the glideslope hasn't yet been captured, you can first press the VOR LOC button to establish yourself on the localizer and get aligned with the extended centerline of the runway. Then, as you continue your approach and capture the glideslope, you can then go ahead and press the approach button to ALSO capture the glideslope. In this video though, the aircraft captured the glideslope and localizer more or less at the same time, so I went ahead and pressed approach so that we would be fully established for a CAT 1 ILS landing at Runway 25L and LA. If you want an even more in-depth explanation as to what a localizer or glideslope is, then you can go ahead and check out episode 5 of this series here: czcams.com/video/FLNZeZy4Qn4/video.html where I explain everything using charts and diagrams. Hopefully you found the video series enjoyable and informative! Cheers:)

Oh, this video missed the part that kills my flights and of a lot of other people. Hit APP to follow the ILS, but, all of a sudden, the video cuts to a VOR/LOC armed instead. Been dying to accurately get when to use VOR/LOC instead of APP or if both should be used and why exactly.
I usually have both diamonds filled and the aircraft flying a perfect path using lnav and vnav path. Then, as I change to VOR/LOC, Zibo tends to end up off the centerline by the end. I have to fly manually way before minimums to align the aircraft, but at this point, my height tends to be ruined. This VOR/LOC remains a complete mystery.

Michael Torode Yeah... I also happen to be more of a civil avitation dude. To be completely honest with you, I started out with tubeliners and never did the general progression from GA aircraft to larger planes. So my knowledge about the Cessna 172 is quite limited- however, it does sound like a cool passion project where I could learn more about the aircraft and teach it to others as well. Might take me some time compile all of the research for these videos, but hey- hard work pays off😊😊

I need to learn the A320 Airbus - I realise there are many tutorials out there but you do it the best! Thanks for all the work you have done for us.

Why do you disengage LNAV and VNAV so early? I understand that it's easier to control descent rate and speed manually, but why would you disengage LNAV and set the course manually when the LNAV autopilot would follow it anways?

It was more of a coaching opportunity for the tutorial. Normally, I would keep LNAV engaged for longer until I'm ready to get aligned with the localizer. However, in this case, I wanted to show the viewers how the rest of the modes on the MCP work and how one can possibly be vectored by ATC to come in for final approach at large airports. Nevertheless, if you enjoyed the content in the video and wish to support a small channel like mine, please be sure to leave a like and subscribe to the channel for more such videos :)
