Have you ever wondered what happens when you turn the key inside your car ignition?
In this simple video we will explain all the steps involved in this process, from the ignition to the operation of the internal combustion engine.
When you get on your car the first thing you do, after putting the seat belts on, is to insert the key in the ignition switch to start the engine.
When the switch is turned on, the electric circuit between the battery and the starter motor is closed.
The starter motor is an important element for the starting system. It allows the engine to reach the proper rpm so as to initiate the engine's operation under its own power.
The starter motor essentially transforms the electrical energy into mechanical energy.
The starter motor is coupled to the FLYWHEEL, which in turn provides to transmit the motion to the CRANKSHAFT. Now the combustion cycle takes place inside the engine cylinders, so the starter motor is disconnected.
Now let's see what happens inside the engine, taking the example of a common 4-STROKE ENGINE.
A four-stroke engine is an internal combustion engine widely used in cars.
It represents an example of efficiency and perfect synchronization. It converts the explosions that occur inside its combustion chambers into motion. The 4-stroke engine in fact gains its energy from heat released during the combustion of the air and fuel mixture inside its cylinders.
The aim of this engine is to use this energy to provide movement and transfer it to the wheels, so that the vehicle can move.
This process requires only 4 simple steps:
It all takes place inside the cylinder. Here we can find the combustion chamber where the explosions occur.
The cylinder is basically the space through which the piston travels. The purpose of the piston is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a piston rod or a connecting rod, so that the back-and-forth linear motion of the pistons is transformed into a circular motion which can power the wheels.
But let's see this process more in detail by disassembling the engine.
02.34 This process requires only 4 simple steps:
It all takes place inside the cylinder. Here we can find the combustion chamber where the explosions occur.
The cylinder is basically the space through which the piston travels. The purpose of the piston is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft
The term “four-stroke” is reffered to the cycle of engine operation which requires 4 strokes of the piston:
First stroke: INTAKE:
The valve must be in the open position while the piston pulls an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder by producing vacuum pressure through its downward motion. The air and fuel were previously mixed together by the injectors. The air-fuel ratio is generally about 14.7 to 1. That’s becouse fuel cannot ignite alone. It is the oxygen in the air in fact that provides the combustion of the fuel. What happens now that the air-fuel mixture is iniside the cylinder?
Second stroke: COMPRESSION:
During this stage both the intake and exhaust valves are closed, and the piston moves up the chamber to the top. This cause the compression of the fuel-air mixture which decreases 10 times its volume. At this point pressure rises drastically as the air and fuel molecules are compressed together colliding with eachother and increasing the temperature. Now we are ready for the explosion!
Third stroke: COMBUSTION and EXPANSION:
At the top of the compression stroke, the SPARK PLUG fires, igniting the compressed air-fuel mixture. This causes an explosion! As the fuel burns it expands, increasing the pressure inside the cylinder and driving the piston downward moving the twist that rotates the crankshaft, which will convert the energy of the explosion into rotary motion.
Now, let’s see the fourth and final stroke, which is called: EXHAUST.
During the exhaust stroke, the piston, once again, returns to the top while the exhaust valve is open. This action expels the spent air-fuel mixture through the exhaust valve.
The 4-stroke cycle is complete but it does not stop here. At a speed of 6000 rpm it repeats up to 50 times per second, causing 200 explosions per second inside each cylinder of this 4-stroke engine.
More than 10 years in industrial supplies have led JAES to become a qualified partner for some of the most important automobile manufacturing companies, providing its technical support over a wide range of industrial components, necessary during the production process of many types of vehicles.
In 4 steps this engine creates a great amount of energy and is very efficient in a very small rpm range. - Věda a technologie

Stop using the word "explosion", this kind of explanations keep people confused on what's actually going on in an engine. There is no explosion, that would be really bad as it would create knock and destroy the pistons pretty quickly. It's just air-fuel mixture burn.

I like the fact that electricity starts the engine running, but then the fuel keeps it going, and then the motion caused by combustion, turns the alternator which recharges the battery.
Kind of poetic.

great video. something I noticed and is interesting to mention in the video: stroke timing. of all of the 4 strokes, the most power comes from the combustion phase. in the animation, the pairs of cylinders 1,4 and 2,3 are synchronized. this is not the best timing for power efficiency, because there will be moments when none of the pistons are in a combustion phase, and others when at least 2 are firing at the same time. to even out the power, the way these strokes are timed is to have a different step happening in each cylinder in a given point, so there is always a piston in the combustion stroke, which improves fuel and power efficiency.
I was looking for this comment. It’s clearly a mistake to have 2&3 intake together (and 1&4). You were being kind to suggest “it’s not the most efficient way.” It would cause bad vibration issues also.
I don’t think mistake in the animation is with the synchronicity of the pistons but rather with the valve timings. They should be opposite for the synchronously moving pistons to achieve smooth power delivery.
Very good point, but taking account of the objective of the video, maybe this type of info could be presented after, when the basics are cleared.
Wow they really did a good job in covering the brand. You totally can't see the brand through it and you also can't see it 0.5 seconds before a cut

@Hideika And then there's Porsche...
Push to start? Nah.

Oh, how about this thing where it's like a key, but it's also like a push to start. So you'll need the fob in the car, then you twist the knob as though it was a key and that starts the car?

@Hideika you sure he didn't mean a rolling start
I mean, it is push to start
My old 68 beetle had to be push started.
it does the same thing but it’s just more electricity going through the battery
Pretty simple explanation. Before any of this happens the engine ECU carries out an engine check procedure without which the ignition and fuel injection can not occur. At the same time some systems compare the key with the emobilizer security system. The engine may crank a couple of turns but won't start. My opinion is this only explanes cars previously to 1995.
That's how we all tricked from the title and this video has so many negative votes.

Right, and they didn't talk about having fuel in the tank for the priming to take place, and how people need money to purchase the petrol, and if not, they can steal it. And if they purchased the petrol versus stealing it, they most likely had a job. Yes, they missed a whole lot.
@@markmalasics8413 you made me laugh 🤣
@@markmalasics8413 he is not wrong, though. the title is what happens when you turn the key. the first things to happen is the electronics are turned on and the fuel pump building up pressure. depending on the ignition switch, there are two or three positions of the key where the car does something before the starter motor even turns. and if you turn the key slowly step by step, you can hear and see what the car does on each position.
to have this explained was my expectation of the video, when I read the title. but basically this video was one minute "when you turn the key the engine starts (duh)" and for the rest of the video it became "how does the principle of an engine work"
@jason crigger talk***
Are the suction and exhaust stroke not responsible for work ?, because while explaining the otto cycle the P-V diagram only consists of compression - combustion - expansion - heat rejection. Sorry, noticed a few problems. First it says at 6k rpms, the CYCLE repeats 50 times per second, but then right after it says there's 200 explosions per second. Only 1/4 of the cycle is the combustion stroke so with that math it should be 50/4 = 12.5 "explosions" per second. But that math is also wrong because a cycle is 4 strokes or 2 full revolutions of the crank meaning only the "explosions" will happen only 1/4 times the rpms. 6000/4 = 1500/60(seconds) = 25 power strokes per second per cylinder at 6k rpms.

6000 rpm is 100 rotations per second. Every two rotations need one explosion. So it should be 50 explosions per second per cylinder.
@@danielcao8621 You're right, I over processed and mixed up stroke/revolution and got 1/2 the answer, sorry. Still can't be 200 combustion strokes per second though. That would require 24k rpm if I'm correct.
@@cccp20062 Yes exactly! :)
@@cccp20062 It's 50 explosions per cylinder per second. Multiplying by 4 cylinders total yields 200 explosions per second _for the entire engine_.
So I’m guessing that screeching sound when you hold the key in place after the engine starts is coming from the starter gear going against the flywheel going at a much faster speed.
Yess correct. Think of it like this “trying to re-engage the starter motor a second time after the engine flywheel is already running “
I like the video. Nice explanation
Wow..great video!
Actually, it is 50 explosions per second on each cylinder x 4 cylinder = total 200 explosions per second on the whole engine.

Nice video!
"Explosions" inside the cylinders? It's called Detonation, which will destroy the engine. Try 'burn' instead.

Other video just starts from the engine ...the fact you start from the ignition makes sense thanks
Amazing. Thank you!
I have a question
How the spark plug know when to fire ??
Good question, i cant find how. I will ask on reddit and let you know
Answer: there is part called the distributor cap which times with the crank shaft to trigger the spark with the coil.
Thank you very very much my friend⚘
@@khaledwehbe2640 ecm send the response to plug to fire!!!
This was just an explanation of a four stroke engine
Me from India me like curry me make observation
Great presentation.
Very informative.
Dude that engine looked like a Cummins turbo diesel 😂there wasn’t any spark plugs 😂
It’s a 22RE
Well there was no turbo and any longitudinally mounted inline 4 or 6 could look like that...
goingcommando27 there doesn’t have to be a turbo (in cgi) in real life it needs one
