710. German Stroll - Biskuithalle - Bonn - Germany - March 25-1995 Thanks to the taper and above all to Willy DeVille and the musicians. / 128087130584600
I'm 67 and I saw Willie several times with the band 'Mink DeVille' in NYC when they were just starting out and once a few years later in New Haven CT. at a cool venue known as 'Toad's Place' where I got to meet him and actually did a little partying with him in their travel bus. Willie was a big fan of 'Hashish' as were we. I remembered from the old 'CBGB' days that he loved pink champagne so I brought a bottle to the Toad's show and sent it back stage to him. He immediatly came out and invited us ( myself and two friends ) back to his dressing room. We talked about NYC and the girls from NYC, as well as Hilly Kristal who opened that awesome club CBGB's in the East Village of Manhattan in the early 1970's when they were sort of the 'House Band'. Their sound from this period is witnessed by Live at CBGB's, a 1976 compilation album of bands that played CBGB and for which the band contributed three songs from the soon to be released album 'Cabretta' a multifaceted album of soul, R&B, rock, and blues recordings, which was selected number 57 in the Village Voice's 1977 Pazz & Jop critics poll. Its lead single "Spanish Stroll" reached number 20 on the UK Singles Chart, the only Willy DeVille recording to ever hit the charts in the United Kingdom. Willie was relaxed and so funny as he took some huge hits from the hash-pipe, before long we were all laughing it up, drinking the champagne and having a grand old time. His driver was anxious to get on the road so we said our goodbyes. He died of pancreatic cancer on August 6, 2009, at the age of 58 and although his commercial success waxed and waned over the years, his legacy as a songwriter has influenced many other musicians, such as Mark Knopfler and Peter Wolf and myself. A really talented musician and a really nice guy. - RIP Willie Boy .. 🙏 🙏 🙏 www.abandonedspaces.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/58/2017/07/cbgb-featured-image-90062.png
Dunno if anyone cares but if you're stoned like me atm you can watch pretty much all the new series on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend these days :)
Oh my. "Oh what a night" to borrow from Frankie Valli. Saw Tom in '77. First, and I guess only time seeing a stripper on stage at a concert. lol. Not fortunate enough to see Willy.
I had started a comment but got verklempt...I met Willie and Toots in a Boston club in 1976 when my husband filled in for the bass player. I was smitten by Toots! She was a looker and fun to be with backstage. I really loved hanging out with her. (Willie was cool too!) After moving in '79, we lost track of even those sporadic meetings. I made a mask with "Toots Lips"...the other day, someone asked if it was Betty Boop lips I had to go back to those days... And Willie was too perfect then, too musically adept to be called punk and he's going to be one of those artist's under- appreciated for his talent and mostly under appreciated for the way his grasp of other's talents contributed to the guts of the 70's. Mostly though, I thought Toots was just great....
Toute la zik que j'aime ! Y'a de la puissance là-dedans, et des grands espaces américains... la route interminable à travers le désert, et un saloon enfumé plein de braillards, au son des guitares qui déchirent.
