    Thanks for this ! Caught one of these in a mouse trap this morning and was having trouble confirming what it was for certain. It had gotten into my kitchen! I live in Nova Scotia and haven’t seen one before

      Great, you're welcome! I've caught three more shrews since I made this video. I've kept the buckets and traps out there the whole time but when it was below freezing they must go into torpor and I didn't catch any. When warmer periods above freezing happened they started coming out again and the traps were waiting.

    An idea on YT is to stuff the bait only into the squarish hole, deep as possible so the critter will have to work hard

    glad i watched this. ..always wondered what a shrew looked like...looks like a mole except with a tail and feet like a mouse unlike a moles strong paddle like feet...

    you should get traps that don’t kill the animal. i have them and they work really well; you just let em out in a park or woods or sometbing.

    So i tried your bucket deal and still havent got a one under it. Out of 40 traps ive set around the house, everyone had been tripped and the nut butter eat off all of em i only actually got 1.. now in some of the other traps ive got pieces of fur and a whole leg one time but they always somehow seem to get the bait but never get hit with the trap.. dunno. Dont think theyre too quick for em maybe just too small.. figure theyre eating on it and the tap swings shut around of em not touching em.. they gotta be getting fat though from all that peanut butter theyve been eating..

      You may have rats. A rat won't get caught in a mouse trap. . .they may get a good whack on the snout but won't get caught in them. It sounds like you did catch a mouse or shrew but if only a leg is present in the trap, that could mean that a rat ate the mouse or schrew after it was caught. Rats will do that. Shrews will eat mice too. You could get a rat trap and see if that catches a rats. The thing is, is that if you have both around, then the bait can be eaten off of the rat trap by a mouse too where they aren't big enough to trip the trigger. So, it's a bit of a challenge if you have both rodents around but you'll get em eventually.

    Install a Barn Owl nest box. A nesting pair will eat more than 3,000 voles in a season.

    That poor shrew is just collateral damage. They cause very slight damage in forests and fisheries and nothing at all in gardens. They live of insects. Moles and rats, however, should all die and I have no sympathy for them.

    You were wise to wear gloves, but I was surprised they came off to handle the traps. Possibility of disease here in the southwest.

    • @VintageWoodWorkshop
      @VintageWoodWorkshop  Před 6 lety

      DanielinLaTuna good to know! Are you specifically talking about hantavirus? Cases are rare here in Pennsylvania and are more associated with mouse droppings so it's something we take into consideration when cleaning our hunting cabin in northern PA.

    • @DanielinLaTuna
      @DanielinLaTuna Před 6 lety

      Vintage Wood Workshop, I was thinking along lines of flea-vectors, but hantavirus too. When I was in college, in eastern Oregon many years ago lol, we caught deer mice bare-handed - what was I thinking?! Do you wet the droppings with weak bleach solution? I’m enjoying your channel.

    Shrews and moles are actually carnivores (and surprisingly are not rodents), so try using meat (think bacon, hot dog, hamburger) instead of peanut butter and I’ll bet you have even better success. If you’re hunting voles you’ll have better luck with a vegetarian based bait.

    That's OD on the Peanut Butter. You do not need to put that much Peanut Butter on the traps.

    • @Holstro_
      @Holstro_ Před 4 lety +2

      @YourNatureBoy27 No but I am a Pest Technician. When you put that much peanut butter on the traps they will eat the peanut butter without setting off the trap because they dont have to trigger the trap to eat the peanut butter, due to the large amount put onto it.

    Remove your deck and there will be few voles! I have lots of voles because of the stupid deck created by the previous owner of the house. A deck is totally useless and it is a lot of work maintaining the stupid deck over time.

      The shrews have to eat. Also,shrews are not rodents and they do not eat birdseed or plants. They are no danger to humans or pets.

      @@tammycampbell7797 shrews do eat birdseed and are vectors for Lyme disease www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071129183745.htm the point of my original reply was to open your eyes. I'm sure you have no problem trapping mice or spiders inside your home, swatting flys, or brushing your teeth. In all cases the victims are just "living", yet you are not letting live.
