      same. It's a very beautiful scape, just too small in my opinion. 20 litres is the absolute minimum to keep a betta, 40l would be far better.

      @Littlewings1211 Před rokem +2

      Agreed, although if he is alone it isn't too bad, but I would prefer the tank to be at least 10 gallons (45ish litres) just to give him some decent swimming space.

      @@Littlewings1211 same, I keep mine in a 64 litre (roughly 16gallon) and she definitely loves it far more than the 25l (~6gallon) quarantine tank she started out in...

      5 gal, or 20l is perfectly fine for a single Betta.

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 Před rokem +2

      @@dymone4894 most betta enthusiasts would disagree. While it isn't going to harm them so long as heat/water parameters are kept very well, it is the equivalent of a human living their entire life in a small bathroom; if someone ensured you had food/water/heat/adequate lighting etc and access to products which enable you to keep yourself clean and well, you could technically live out your entire life in said bathroom - but would you want to? Ironically it is also a lot less work on your part to keep your betta in a slightly larger tank because you are able to make better use of filtrating plants and it is easier to keep water parameters such as temperature, nitrates, ammonia etc stable as in a tiny tank even minor fluctuations can have a bigger effect and cause more issues in the tank. Of course this is all about personal opinion and how much work you'd like to/are able to put into your aquarium. I had a single betta in a 25l nano and he did ok because I was doing 25-50% water changes at the very least once a week. With a larger tank (only about double, say 10g so not huge at all) I could have added a lot more live plants, larger/stronger filter, possibly a CO2 set-up (although this would not be at all necessary) and therefore cut the size or frequency of the water changes needed to maintain the perfect environment for my little fishy buddy ☺️

    When building tanks for bettas always make sure you don’t leave spaces where they can squeeze into. My giant betta once got stuck behind a dennerle filter and I even saw one stuck in a shrimp feeding tube on Reddit. Also (and this is more for the plakats than long finned bettas) put a lid on your tank. Bettas love to jump.
    Long story short: make sure your tank is safe because most bettas have a secret death wish.

    Nice work as always but, personally, I would have used the OASE FiltoSmart Thermo 100, turned down the flow, and blocked the outflow a bit with the rocks. In such a small space getting the heater outside the tank really helps. Plus, it would be easier to clean a small external canister without having to remove the rocks.

      Sure you can! You can do one with sand only, in fact, we already did some scapes like that on the channel. The downside of the nano tanks is the fragile ecosystem. They can get algae more easily.

  • @Littlewings1211
    @Littlewings1211 Před rokem +9

    Personally I don't like nano tanks for fish. It's a popular misconception that bettas don't need a lot of space due to its natural habitat being shallow rice paddies but they don't realise that those paddies are huge and stretch for miles. The same misconception led to the belief that they don't need filtration or a heater and led to the horrible "trend" of keeping bettas in vases and tiny novelty tanks even smaller than this 20l (5 gallon) nano.
    Alone, with weekly water changes and really precise monitoring this guy will do well in here but in my personal opinion bigger is always better. To prevent any nerves issues always ensure your scape has a couple of hides (either decorations you can buy, natural things like rocks or coconut shell halves or use clumps/curtains of plants to give your fish places to hide and feel secure in his home, especially when it's new. If the tank is in a heavily trafficked area it may be worth using black paint or some kind of screen pasted to the outside of the glass so that your fish isn't constantly being startled by movement on the other side of the glass and he can relax and won't get sick from the constant stress. This is why a lot of tanks are made with at least one opaque side.
    Also make sure you have some form of leaf (either natural or artificial - you can buy ones that attach to the glass via a sucker or clip) or resting platform just beneath the waterline as bettas enjoy resting on the surface and although this can look shocking, due to labyrinth organs they are able to breathe air both from the surface and through the water via their gills so will be absolutely fine. Also they just like watching their human slaves freak out thinking they have died (or maybe I was just "blessed" with sadistic fish!) 🤣🤣🤣

Many live a good dozen or more years...better life expectancy than the wild and what fish stores purport their living span to be. That's a perfectly adequate sized tank. I've bred them and raised multiples in tanks smaller than that. Many keep thousands and most you buy from stores are raised in small 8 oz cups for 2-3 years before they hit retail. There's no need for any correction. PLEASE CORRECT YOUR OWN STATEMENTS.

And you suppose size of tank matters for care? People who have smaller tanks tend to care better for their fish. It's quite a bit harder to keep parameters in check on smaller tanks and they are more likely to be kept in better care than larger tanks. Most people can't even keep them alive for a month or two.
