    I like how the reimagining captures Darth Vader’s canonical fighting style. You can feel he swings his lightsaber hard and his strikes are very aggressive. He’s fighting with a controlled and focused rage at Obi-Wan while he just deflects and parries, only striking when he has an opening.

    You mentioned a facial smirk at 5:48.
    The hint of a smile is because: A) Obi Wan sees Luke and Leia together for the first time since their birth. B) Obi Wan is the only one who is totally aware of Anakin's, Luke's and Leia's relationship to each other.

    I especially like what they did with the end, where it's not the door closing that stops Vader: it's him still sensing Obi-Wan and not understanding what's going on (plus the plan to track the Falcon back to the rebel base). Cause let's face it: Vader could rip that door right out of the wall if he wanted to.

    I get chills watching this 🔥🔥🔥
    The voice overs, the absolute *Rage* in Vader's strikes, Vader's extensive use of the aggressive Form V Lightsaber Form (his preferred Form Djem So/Shien [The Way of the Krayt Dragon]), the fight choreography--everything.
    If you look closer, Obi Wan keeps the point of his lightsaber blade as a threat to Vader nearly all the time when retreating, like a real life swordsman.

      It's also a really good show of how age has only slowed Obi-Wan down in the sense that he clearly hadn't kept up with his lightsaber skills, having once been the best duelist in the galaxy. Despite that, though, he's still able to keep a near-perfect defense, forcing Vader to attack using dirty methods in an attempt to CREATE an opening since Obi-Wan isn't giving him one. Excellent fight choreography.

    I noticed you didn't use headphones or earbuds, so two things might have escaped your notice: First, "You were the Chosen One!!" right at the end is NOT the only Ep. 3 dialogue voiced-over as a memory. Listen close after Obi-Wan Pushes Vader. Second, listening even more carefully between the closure of the Blast Doors and "Run Luke, run!" There is the sound of a Force Push, but nothing moves. These guys answer a question I've had for decades: Why doesn't the raging psycho murder-borg get through the door and kill the fleeing rebels???
    "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." I think we hear a Force Push because Vader is trying to rip open the blast doors, but the now "stricken down" Kenobi is counter-pushing, thus nothing moves, keeping the Psycho-Cyborg out of the hanger... that's why they have him saying "...Kenobi..."

    It was beautifully done, with them trying to blend the old scenes with the new and trying to stay loyal to how both Obi-Wan and Vader would fight. Episode IV at even a 10 million budget in 1975-76 was cutting it close to the bone in what Lucas could spend, which meant essentially NO stunt doubles for either Prowse or Guinness. Prowse, not a trained.swordsman, was hampered in both vision and movement by the Vader outfit, and Alec Guinness, to be honest, was an old man who (unlike Christopher Lee), had never been a fencing enthusiast, and his stage fighting experience was decades behind him. Also, the "blades" of those lightsabers were particularly fragile-- they just couldn't withstand impact like the later movies.

    About the Gandalf power discussion: You mentioned that he should have had that massive magical power scene which would've been cool but Lord of The Rings is a world known as 'Grounded Fantasy' where it still has fictional creatures and elements like dragons, orcs and elves but its still semi realistic and doesn't explore magic as much as High Fantasy genres would. I suppose the only other scene I can think of in LOTR apart from the Balrog bridge section is the end of the Battle of Helm's Deep where Gandalf burst through on top of the hill with the Rohirrim.

    A big reason why they don't do a lot of big magic with the Force or with Gandalf is that they are "Soft" magic systems - not really detailed or explained, so if you use it frequently you start to run into the issue of the plot feeling weak if you can just fix things with magic. a lot of "Hard" magic systems like in avatar the last airbender or the Brandon Sanderson Novels there are clearly defined rules where the audience knows what the magic can do vs what it can't do, which allows the characters to use their wits on how to apply the magic to resolve the plot instead of just having Gandalf walk around fixing everything with magic, since the audience doesn't actually know the limits of Gandalf's power. its the same with the force.

      @thedutchwolf97 Před 3 lety +3

      The main problem with the LotR movies are budget, technology and realism. There's absolutely no way of showing what Gandalf can *really* do in a live-action adaptation. The same goes for pretty much all other super-powered beings. The limits are less harsh these days, but really the only medium with which you can show a being's full power is through animation. 'cause with animated stuff, you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want.

    • @crackersdrake8448
      @crackersdrake8448 Před 3 lety +1

      @@thedutchwolf97 I agree, my point though was mostly toward the fact that Tolkien isn't about grand shows of magic. Those that can wield it don't need to show off (for the most part). Magic in Middle-Earth is almost a spiritual thing. It's about the power in symbolism. The moment that always sticks out to me is Aragorn healing Farimir and Eowyn. The hands of a the king are the hands of a healer and all that. Kingsfoil is a healing plant , but in his hands it almost seemed to become More.
      Anyway, that was the main driving point behind my earlier comment... probably could have been more clear though :)
      Edit: spelling

    If you haven't watched Clone Wars or Rebels. You should. It's definitely worth it and show you more about character progression or introducing. And for Clone Wars you're learning about the clones too and you may get attached to some of them. And this series making the prequels so much better in context than the films could themselves. You're right, in that this reimagining is probably how it would've been done if A New Hope had been made now.
    I like the aggression and added mobility in the duel. I think, even older as they both are, and Anakin having to manoeuvre in the suit, it fits with how Jedi Masters would still be able to fight.

    the remake of the fight scene more closely tied in their fighting style from Revenge of the Sith. With how aggressive their fight was in episode 3 vs the original sc38 fight... in ep2 seeing Yoda use the force to help his aging body be able to still hold his own against younger opponents. this showed how Obi-wan was indeed older but should still have been able to fight somewhat more aggressive than in the original fight. same with Vader. Also the call back voices put into the fight... I feel like had the story been made in chapter order, George probably would have done something similar.

    Regarding your comments about Gandalf... I feel like Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) were going for a different feel with "magic" in those stories. Remember that Gandalf was NOT a wizard, that's just what he was called by some of the people of Middle Earth. He was an Istari, an embodied angelic spirit, and his power was more subtle, and more tied to creation itself than to spectacular displays of power like you would see in wizard fights. His fight with Sauron in the more recent movies...light v. shadow... is a good example of their primal natures. I feel like it may be a bit erroneous to expect more magic-seeming things from divine beings.

    One of the main reasons why they couldn’t have lightsaber duels like this in the original besides the budget which this may actually tie into the budget but the original lightsabers they used for filming were really heavy so being able to spin them around like now a days would’ve been hard if not impossible. But you can kind of see how in the original fight scene how they were heavy since Obi wan and Vader almost always held them around waist level and had them just slightly pointing upwards.

    It was awesome. My only pet peeve is what nobody ever notices and it's an obvious thing. Never in Star Wars (I don't count the sequels, since they aren't Star Wars) the Sith NEVER lit their lightsabers first. The Jedi were always the agressors (the only excemption is probably the Darth Maul Qui-Gon fight on Tatooine but it's difficult to see in that fight who ignited their lightsaber first).
    So Vader turning on his weapon before Obi-Wan in this, is a bit of a non-continuity.
    An amazing segment. Something that should be enshrined in the Star Wars Hall of Fame.

    The lady here mentioned the added aggression of Darth Vader vs. Obi Wan. I believe that this is added because, this is deeply personal for Darth Vader aka Anakin Skywalker, because Obi Wan and he have history, in that 20 years earlier during Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, Obi Wan critically injured Anakin, during their famous duel. Darth Vader obviously has been looking forward to settling the score with Obi Wan Kenobi!

    This is the fight as it should have been, but obviously limited by the technology of the time.
    You can FEEL Vader's anger at Obi-Wan, all those years of suffering in his suit because his friend, his mentor, instantly wrote him off as a lost cause instead of even trying to help him. He's so furious that he resorts to literally using his fists to beat Obi-Wan.
    You can also feel Obi-Wan's sadness and regret in this, he knows he failed him, but he feels it's too late for any change to be made now, and he's fighting defensively. He knows he's not leaving the Death Star alive, he's just buying time for the others to escape, because he knows THEY are the ones who can win in the end. He's not fighting to win; he doesn't want to.
    The Ep. 3 callbacks were perfectly placed as well; the last things each said to the other up until this moment.
