- In this video we will be replacing the electrolytic capacitors on the main board of the VS machine. Over the years, old caps wear out and cause various problems, such as crackling sounds during rec or playback or starting the machine without any sound at all.

I was able to replace 45 Condensers.
I'll use this Next 20 years.

Cap's SPEC is there.But Same type cap is expired.i found same Reactance cap in electronics parts market.

Many thanks for your words and for feedback! Yes, if you already have a problem with your 2480, go ahead and replace the caps. I chose not to put on the smd caps, since they are not so long-lived. However you can replace them with smd caps to preserve "visible authenticity" or use high-quality dip caps with solder leads - Panasonic, Elna or Nichicon, there is a choice, and I suppose you yourself will decide there. 👍
bravo. I did this too, with a 2480. 80 caps on the mainboard alone : ) Have you considered a CF card? Mine boots a full project in seconds, it's unbelievably fast. Somebody (previous owner or repairer) had dropped the back cover onto the custom gate array IC. However, even though the legs are bent, it still works fine
Thanks so much for this video. I just received a VS2480 a few days ago sold "for parts" only. No sound, not even the meters. I get a "DSP fail" error. Now I can see why. I've know about the cap issues, but didn't know it affected the DSP chips. This will be my next project. Btw, funny your next project is a removable drive. I just got done doing this on another VS2480 with a IDE/SATA adapter, except my drive is held into place with electrical tape ;) On the VS2480, there's enough room to slide a 2.5 drive on top of the CD/DVD without any modification.

G’day Anthony,just came across your video down under in Australia & been having the no sound issue on start up until I restart a few times,do you happen to have a record of the value of the caps so I can pre purchase & possible try to replace myself,as I’m ok with a soldering iron (not amazing like you though),I noticed you remove the solder completely on each cap is there a reason for that ?
I will struggle to find a electronics tech so will give it a try,any extra help would g

Hi, I got a Roland VS 2480. When I turn it on, it says “Sub System No Response”. Is it possible to fix it or is it dead? Do you have experience with this? Thank you
My 2480 is experiencing all the same symptoms that you demonstrated . I have been looking for a repair shop for years now . unable to find anybody willing to attempt it .your video makes it seem pretty easy if all I have to do is remove and and replace capacitors on the main board. Then all I would need is the number of capacitors and type, all the chemical , I’m assuming , that’s listed in the service manual on the main board. Note, I am not an engineer of anything, but as I stated, if all I have to do is remove and replace I’m confident that I can manage this. I did also see in the service manual that there are chemical capacitors on the Jack board and analog board as well. Would I need to replace these also? Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated
I replaced all the caps on a 2480, all the surface mount ones and the large filter cap. The PSU I left alone. It's easy to read the values off the side of the caps. It's difficult to open up and access the boards but with patience you can get it running again.

Regarding the fact that the external VGA monitor does not work, you can try using a small LCD monitor on the VS machine itself, go to the utilities and system settings. There is a window where the external monitor is turned on, and the frequency is set, etc. Perhaps it is simply turned off, check this.
The Roland VS -2400 can use AC electric
220 v. or not?
All VS-2400 machines have a universal internal power supply of the same schematic design and work perfectly from a mains of 100 to 240 volts. The voltage value on the back panel label indicates compliance with country-specific export requirements only, so don't worry.
У меня в MV8000 прям аж такие заметные полосы помех на внешнем VGA, но все работает четко, все руки не доходят кондеры перепаять. Причем наверное ограничится все перепайкой пары кондеров питания на видеоконтроллере, особенно там где его тв ЦАП. У приятеля та же ситуация). Что то из разряда- сапожник и без сапог). Кстати новые кондеры лучше выбирать низкоимпедансных серий.

Лучше конечно все поменять (всё равно залезать и браться за паяльник), в целом шумовой фон в том числе по земле и в виде возможных наводок станет намного меньше.
Конденсаторы для ответственных ремонтов я ставлю Панасоник, серии fc, fm, fk, fr, а в данном случае нужно было отремонтировать оч оперативно (и себе), поэтому просто поехал в местный магазин и набрал того, что было в наличии поприличней ))) заказывать и ждать Панасоник было долго…

Hello Victor, actually there can be several reasons causing loading problems. This may be a problem with the power supply, or with dried capacitors from time, or the hard drive that is in your VS machine is faulty. You can try to change the hard drive to a new one and try format it (but HDD/SSD does not exceed the capacity of 120 GB, otherwise machine will work unstable). There is also the possibility of internal system errors or program crashes, but these are very rare problems and usually these machines run very reliably.
I have a VS-2400 that is producing cracks and pops only from the digital outputs, can I assume this results from the same or a similar issue? Do you have a parts list for this repair?
Please provide a list of caps needed for this repair. I cannot get the Manufacturer and spec information to be able to order. You have been so helpful to post this video. If you know any shops that can repair the VS2400CD and VS2480 I would like to have their contact info please.

Well, what can I tell you... you can of course try to contact the nearest Roland service center in your country, perhaps there is a possibility that somewhere in Europe or America they can help you (I don't know where you are). But keep in mind that this is not a product that is relevant for the company, it has long been discontinued, and there are almost no spare parts left in the services and at the main plant. And if someone in the service center will undertake to help you, it will be some kind of enthusiast, and you will be very lucky. But in general, the situation with these machines today is such that they are repaired either on their own (of course, you need to have many years of repair skills), or by referring to thematic forums (for example, VS-Planet) and draw advice and experience from other users there.
I'm in Russia, I've been repairing Pro equipment for a long time, and have upgraded several Roland motherboards for international customers, but there are currently difficulties in international shipping to and from our country...

hello good morning, where can i find fader compatible with the VS 2400?
Hi Ryldo,
none of the faders fit directly into the 2400 except genuine ones. For this machine the faders were made by Panasonic for Roland, they are unique. And even the faders from the 2480 won't suitable since they differ in size and are just as unique. These days, perhaps somewhere in the official Roland in Japan there is still a some of faders, but you need to ask them.
I installed other, non-original 100mm long faders on my VS machines.

Any special software needed to get it to recognize that hard drive mod?
To install a hard disk in the machine, no special software is needed. All you need is a sata-ide adapter and a couple of cables to connect it all.
