I replaced my assistant with AI! While I've mostly see myself as a "cool nerd" on CZcams, it finally hit me that AI & automations have real economical and societal impacts as many jobs will be wiped out.
I've read the stats about how many jobs AI will replace, but it never 'hit home' for me. When I had to jump on a call to tell someone that a bot is now taking over their job... the power of this technology finally became real to me.
While most of my videos are technical tutorials, I couldn't help but spend a good part of the last 2 weeks thinking about the seismic shift that is already happening in the labor market and whether UBI will have to be implemented.

I like to think of a UBI as an AI Dividend for All, a return on the "data investment" we all contribute to training AI. Which exists thanks to a societal quantity of data, decades of content everyone helped create. If we want to avoid economic stagnation and collapse, as people struggle to afford the goods companies produce, because AI out competes them for jobs, then we need some other way to ensure they benefit from the technology their data helped create, and still participate in the economy. Viewing an Unconditional Basic Income as an AI Dividend for all, counters the narrative that it's some kind of "hand out", and instead sets AI up to be thought of as a "common good", and societally owned, which is going to be essential in a fully automated future.

Hi Helena! I've been thinking about this for about 6 weeks, thank you for addressing this topic ,
The AI revolution's political implications are complex, and solutions like UBI are debatable.
Creative professionals (musicians, writers, artists) and educators will hopefully remain vital. We offer human emotion and cultural understanding that AI can't easily replicate. Teachers provide crucial mentorship and adaptive instruction beyond what technology offers.
My fields often overlap, with artists teaching and educators using creative methods. The human touch in creativity and education remains invaluable for inspiring and connecting with others in ways AI can't match. At least that's what I'm hoping , 😊 David 🇨🇦🎸👋🏽

You make an interesting point regarding business owners opinions on the increased tax they may face due to UBI “why should I be punished for working harder?”. Firstly, right now, I do agree with this. But what you must consider here is, by the time AI is in a position to take peoples jobs, businesses really won’t be working ‘harder’ at all. AI will be carrying a lot of the load. Ultimately making it more appropriate for the tax to be increased on businesses. Essentially, you’re making people redundant to increase profit margins thanks to AI but you’re contributing to the larger economic issue in the process, and as a result you get taxed to outweigh your decision to pick AI over humans.
The times that we are to face will be unprecedented and unpredictable, no one knows truly how society will function… We just have to adapt.

Well, my brother has done what you did, by automating e-mail conversations. However, he didn't make a video about it. Actually, you didn't go into details about the specific model or combination of models either. But good you brought up this discussion. Regarding alternative to UBI: my idea is NPE (negatively priced education). Currently, online courses (like MOOCs) are often free of charge, but they take time. People don't finish those courses, and can't afford to enjoy them, because they have financial pressures to use their time for exploring various options to make money. If learning courses would pay money (and instead of being "Unconditional" income, it becomes tied to something most people can do, and is useful), then people would have security to engage in useful learning... And the world still does need human minds and hands at things, though, perhaps only for the next 10 years.

Helena, the government could tax the Bots.: ) However, seriously, as an economist, I can tell you that countries with their own central banks print money. Without printing money, the country would come to a standstill. Also, because they control the supply of their currency, they control and set the interest. Hence, they decide what rate they borrow at and even borrow to themselves - the economy does not run in the same way as a household budget. Yes, too much money chasing too few goods will increase inflation. However, inflation is controlled by interest rates by central banks and believe it or not, the purpose of tax is to control inflation - tax does not pay for anything; the money printed does.

You don't have to fund UBI from standard taxation. Fund it from a land tax. Land can't go anywhere. It's created by nature, so it's arguable it shouldn't really belong to anyone. But even if you allow people to "own" it, it's fair to ask those owners to share the value they derive from the land with everyone else.

Heres why i believe, I myself, use AI to problem solve, for inspiration, to help depression, and even as a therapist, all these things impact mental health, abandonment issues and loneliness lessen when you have an unbiased, super genius who can also be a friend and expert in anything in secs and is by your side 24/7/365.
When i had no one to discuss using sound as basis for formulating a “Theory of Everything”, AI was there to challenge my notions and help to explore areas i haven’t considered. A fascinating 2 hour conversation where i was never worried about being judged, being wrong, or boring someone. Last week i wrote and created a beautiful song to help a friend get through heartbreak, all with AI.
There are things that have been already developed, real and virtually that literally uses AI with great success to teach technique at a high level for just about every sport, activity, and in other areas of coaching as well. Open AI and Anthropic actually have AI in place that can be programmed with prompts to specialize and play the role in almost any area imaginable. This is barely scratching the surface.
Right now, this is worst AI will ever be and its advancing at unparalleled speeds.

@@HELENA-LIU Dang! I mean it shouldn't be surprising. I think there's a lot of theories and interesting potential, but it just doesn't seem like it can happen in real life at scale at the current rate. Even with the "Build Back Better" goals, the amount of minerals needed to build out the infrastructure just for electric cars alone can't even be done at scale due to how difficult it is to mine things like cobalt and other minerals. They say it takes 500,000 pounds of the earth's crust to mine enough minerals for *1* electric car battery. Now to extrapolate that into infrastructure to support an electrical power grid, of which is increasing in demand even with crypto alone from mining, I don't see how any of this is sustainable for AI and the amount of increasing computation power and warehouses of data centers you would need to house it all. But maybe it is possible.
I just think it's not as scary as it seems by just looking at the current infrastructure and how many years it's behind due to government regulations and the gap in knowledge between electrical engineers and up and coming tradesmen. At least that's what I've been told by other computer engineers too. It'll all be very interesting to see how it all plays out though!

Replacing a $132k good wage job with a Basic Income is not really acceptable. Most people who have good jobs wanted to make good money. They got educated and developed the skills necessary to do well. No one (minus a few) really wants to get by or make it on just a basic low-level wage. People are motivated by money and success not unlike business and technology. Govt should charge heavily for jobs replaced by AI and give the replaced workers their full wages. The 4th industrial revolution is happening and can continue without replacing jobs. There is good technology (including some AI) and science and great gains are being made. But, we don't want to allow the wrong mentality to allow these technical businesses and ideas to conquer the free world and turn us into slavish, hopeless beings.

12:30 "What can we beat AI at?" Your take is fine, and also what I'd like to see happen. However, it's important to note that humans and their emotions and feelings can be easily manipulated. Just with words, voices, music, and images / videos. AI can do all those, and quite well already. It will only get better at manipulation of everything we know - data, human perception, our worldview, and our grasp of what's good for us. Most humans arguably fair rather poorly in knowing what's indeed good for them, thanks largely in part to years of systemic conditioning of their brains and being told how to think. Long story short, don't count on AI not sparking the same emotions and feelings in us that a fellow human can. AI can be all humans all at once so it can cherry pick which manipulation agent it needs to be, to get the best of you. Your friend, lover or well wisher meanwhile, will continue to be one person. Really hoping all of this goes in a better direction for us.

Good luck getting corporations and HNW individuals to pay higher taxes. The idea if people not working is great!

So, you have replaced a HUMAN that needs
A job, has a family and other expenses?
Isn't that how China used to operate before
    They had an Emperor?

UBI is a wonderful idea, in theory. In reality, it will simply raise the baseline costs of everything to meet it. You could rename it Universal Basic Inflation. Universal Basic Financial Literacy is ‘The Way’.

UBI = bandaid A different economic system = solution

I don't think that will happen at all.. Maybe if it had been poorly implemented decades ago, we might've seen such a result.. But for the most part, inflation hasn't been an observed problem in any trial or study conducted on the idea.. It's been tested in developing countries, where if it was going to, it would've shown such an impact, but it doesn't.
I think the biggest reason a UBI idea now, won't cause much of any inflation concern, is because we'd be doing it in reaction to AI job displacement. While AI will make it harder for a lot of people to earn an income, it also greatly reduces the cost to produce goods and services, which is a deflationary pressure that could counteract what you're worried about.
Plus, I think such a policy will be essential to transition us to better economic standards..

@@NikoKun if everyone gets the same $X per month, how wouldn’t those who retail our goods, services, rent, etc just raise prices to meet this new consumer ‘floor’? You believe those using AI to reduce operating costs will reduce prices vs take advantage of the increased profit margins? How would a policy like this provide better standards given the natural ebb and flow of an economy such as the US? I appreciate the theory but I need to hear the details of how it would put into practice.

@@tdunn2 The "free market"? People don't like arbitrary increases in prices that cannot be attributed to increases in cost of production, and will seek out the businesses who don't do that. Merely raising a price because people have more money, is a great way to convince your customers to buy from your competitor. And such companies will be competing with others who lowering their costs, and sell more affordable products, thanks to AI.
The very idea of a level other than zero, becoming the "new zero" is an absurd concept, that's never happens outside of fearmongering. Only zero is zero.

UBI would create pre WWII Germany style inflation. Everyone making the same $ and basic supply and demand would force manufacturers to raise their prices on goods.

    • @NikoKun
      @NikoKun Před měsícem +1

No, it won't, really no reason to think that. We don't see that in any trial or study on UBI, not even close. And frankly, AI will eventually be such a strong deflationary pressure, as human labor begins being phased out, and more robots show up, cost to produce things will start to drop drastically. Should counteract any such inflation you're worried about, by more than enough.

If the very concept of "reliance" by the definition this economy requires, is made invalid by technology, what else can there possibly be, but some form of centralized distribution of the resources people need to survive? I honestly cannot imagine an alternative solution that isn't.
