This is going to sound crazy, but all I want to be able to do is to hold my book in my hand and say “yes I am an author and this is my book!” If I sell a lot that’s just an extra bonus. I love this post even though it’s over a year later that I am jumping in on it, but it’s very valuable. Thank you!

Would you be able to elaborate about building a community? Where are the best places to interact? It’s a huge stumbling block for me. Thank you! And the planner was put on hold sadly. I didn't have time to fit it into plans for this quarter. I'll give an update if it's looking close!

I've been working on my book trilogy for years, and I'm in the editing process of publishing my first book. This helped because I have no idea what to do. I love you enthusiasm and your encouragement. I am launching my first book in a week's time and am super nervous. It is non-fiction and I wish you wrote non-fiction because you could tell me the best way to market it. I don't have a huge following on social media so it is going to be uphill for me. Wow, thanks for your commitment in putting this together, Sarra. I wish I knew all this 10 years ago. I might just say, 10 copies of a book sold on release would be a dream come true for most of us authors. I have 12 books out and I've only made 73 sales in total in about 8 years of self-publishing.
I agree with what you say that far more important than promoting your book is writing something you love in a genre people will want to read and knowing all the tropes, etc, for what readers in that genre will be expecting. That sort of continuity and consistency is similar to grabbing a Big Mac and knowing you'll find the same ingredients in it every single time, and it puts readers at ease. This is a lesson it has taken me a long time to learn because I love to be way out and different with my stories.
Another thing I would add, because I know you have a lot of Aspies following your videos (and I am one myself), is that writing is one of those fortunate career paths where it's not necessary to have an extraordinary amount of emotional intelligence or emotional experience and where a more unusual and weird (or even disturbed!) mindset can work in a person's favour. So if, like me, you, the fellow commenter reading this comment, are not getting great sales, think about changing the genre you write in. I am currently in the process of switching to horror and slasher suspense-type stories, and I am confident of better success than with my other genres, like urban romance, etc. When I liked this video, my like was no. 666 - so maybe that's a sign I'm on the right track?

I confess I'm really impatient to try your Publish and Thrive course, but I have a while to wait. Have you considered making a video about what it looks like to build and maintain a fanbase? Thank you for your wonderful tips and advise. I was just wondering. Do you ever talk about budgeting? I watched a couple of your videos now and you mention briefly about spending money on ads. Have you ever talked about a rough amount to have saved up and ready for beginning and then how you would would portion that amount out?

Great information! How many people should be on your ARC team?
I think it's a pretty personal choice. I have about 50 active people on my ARC team right now, but at one point I had almost 100. Some friends of mine only have 20. I think it's something to build over time, but I try to keep the number of free copies I sent out reasonable compared to my overall sales.

I don't currently have a full walkthrough on setting up an Amazon account here on my channel, only in my Publish & Thrive course which isn't open right now. It's pretty easy, though! Go to kdp.amazon.com and you'll just need all your tax information and address to get started.
