I already made a video on how to take effective notes for A-level students, but I wanted to make a specific video discussing how to take notes effectively at university! in university the format of learning is different as the lessons are lecture based and require you to condense a lot of notes. I studied biomedical sciences at newcastle university for my undergraduate degree and I remember needing help with making efficient notes during the lectures! so today I hope to share with you all of my tips and advice to help you make more successful notes! I hope this helps! :)

It's sad that practical and useful videos such as Atousa's get only a couple thousand views whereas impractical and frankly, useless videos such as 'using 10 colored highlighters to make pretty notes' videos get hundreds of thousands of views. Good job Atousa! greetings from a fellow biological science student... not many videos tailor made for students of our subject.
you are very kind, and always sweet to hear that from a fellow biological science student hehe! I agree, I try my best to share my part, I'm sire the pretty notes videos have their own place in the world too haha :)
Totally agree on reading the lecture notes the night before! My friend gave me this advice during college and it had helped me a lot during lectures :) In biosciences degree, I remember always using the word "organisms" during lectures note taking and to shorten it I draw this face (🙂) to represent it. I always find it funny seeing "micro🙂" instead of "microorganisms" when Im revising the notes 😂
Aw it's so good that you got given this advice, it honestly makes so much difference! also that is so funny haha, and I bet you will never forget it haha
These tips are great! Totally agree with the ‘being prepared’ thing! Another thing I found really helpful was using multiple resources, for the longest time I would think of lecture notes as gospel, and would only occasionally look at text books. Then in one of my Cancer Bio lectures I just could not get my head around the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis, each process seemed so long with so many molecules to remember! So I ended up watching a CZcams video about it and it all seemed so simple! Lo and behold, in the exam a 30 mark question came up, ‘describe both the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways’ - nailed it! Since then I’ve alwaaaays watched videos to try understand complicated processes/pathways.
And yes you are absolutely right, I would do the exact same! sometimes you need someone to explain something to you a bit differently! hence youtube! and wow that is so good! and you know what I might mention this in my future videos because it is such good advice!! thanks for this :)
Atousa could you recommend useful CZcams channel for bio sciences?? Would really appreciate it xx
Thank you so much for this! I started uni in September this year (2020) (I'm doing biomed!) and I've been struggling to figure out how to make notes. This video was super helpful!
Hey Atousa, thanks for this video! I'm about to start biomedical sciences and I had no clue where to start with notes since I generally just got given everything by my teachers in sixth form.
This is so useful.. thank you
Could you make a video on how to revise notes?
Gian Ilagan Good question! I was just thinking about that.
yes absolutely! :)
Excellent!
thank you so muchhh
I've got my first uni lecture today. Thanks for the tips!
good luck!!! I hope it all went well :)
Thanks these were super useful tips
Hey , thank you for such a great video. I’ve been writing everything in my notes for 18 months now and it’s so unsustainable that something needs to change! Im wondering what did you find most useful to do during and then after a lecture?
Thanks for the videooo! Helpful indeed! And yeah so true, when you were talking about copying the slides word for word as the lectures talking, it's crazy. Better off having the lecture slides printed off, beforehand.
you are more than welcome lovely! and yeah exactly, definitely something I learnt the hard way! |:
Hey,
In terms of writing the notes how do you implement the active recall aspect in this or would it be good to use flashcards (i.e. anki) as an addition to the notes based on exam questions?
Hi thanks for your videos. I started biomedical science course and I finished my first semester of first year. I’m really nervous to go through ahead. because english is not my first language and I’m really struggling. what would you think, can I manage this degree within that and do you have more advise?
I wish all lectures were recorded
Great vid! Btw what did you get in ukcat?
thank you! and I haven't done it yet but I will make a follow up video :)
What is the difference between biomedical science and medical science?
Thank you!! In my first set of lectures last week I was writing down EVERYTHING, and people were genuinely looking at me like "how is he not getting a cramp?" Or like "is he ok?" Or as my friends said "you do know the lectures are not only recorded, but the slides are online?". I try not to do that for this week's lectures, but I don't know if I'll manage- I'm so used to writing everything down.
aw I know what you mean!!! haha, it's so easy to do though isn't it?! do whatever you are most comfortable with, but just take care not to burn yourself out because I did D: it was not fun haha
I’m studying biomedical sci too :p
ahhh woooo! biomed! hehe :)
Going to study biomed at Newcastle uni as well🤙
Hey if u r a fresher how do u know wat to pre-read nd how do the lecturers give out notes. And I heard u have to do research so if u may somehow explain i wuld appreciate it....Am just curious
Hello :) all very good questions! I will make a video addressing all of these soon - have a nice day!
