Me. The choruses are undeniably similar but the rest of it not so much. I'm really confused as to why he would rip off another song when he has written plenty of his own hits...also why is this just coming out now? Makes me sad.
That's not really the standard for determining infringement. That a substantial segment shares 70% of the same notes and chord progression is kind of a slam dunk. Also Sheeran didn't write Photograph by himself; it was co-written with Johnny McDaid, which means either or both of them may have been responsible for lifting the chorus.
It's been "out" for as long as Potograph is. Matt's been having his fun with it during his own performances, too, although he's not the originator of this law suit. He only seem to have put his own cheeky twist on the affair by mashing up his and Ed's choruses on several occasions. "Eire Creative" did a professional video that has the chorus alternating between Matt and Ed: "Matt Cardle VS Ed Sheeran" [ fKAvfGvJWGA ]. Starting at 51s.

I think it is a big deal, it takes a lot of work to think of things and it is not fair if a shady person (or perhaps worse, someone who does not think very well and actually thinks that they came up with that themselves when they didn't ) steals it and makes millions off of it.

I do not think they are identical they sound just a bit similar but like every guitar song has some of the same chords it is what they have to work with the chords go nicely together and can make a good song. I do not think Ed Sheeran should be sued for having a good taste in music and using some of the same chords that he uses. I personally do not like these lyrics but the song does have amazing instrumental talent.

This song speaks to me deeply. I hear the story of Grace penetrating the darkness and amazingly reaching me. I was so lost but He never gave up on me until I saw.

I read the article on the internet and was skeptical, as I thought there wasn't that much similar with Blurred Lines and Got to Give It Up, but yeah, anyone who says they can't hear it is either tone deaf or just kidding themselves. It's exactly the same. Doesn't matter that it's a small part of the song. It the fucking main hook of the chorus.
I agree, I clicked on this song ready to believe there was no way they'd sound the same. The start reaffirmed that belief, however, during the chorus I felt like I was listening to photograph. I've never been able to pick up on bits that songs copy, and this one was just plain obvious. Most of the people saying it doesn't have any similarities don't realise that ed isn't being sued for copying the entire song, but rather just parts of it. They also don't want to believe that the allegations could be true.

I heard photograph and thought...bloody hell that reminds me of Matt Cardle's song. Not sure how people are defending Ed Sheeran saying Matt copied him when this song came out in 2011 and photograph came out much later. Ed is a great songwriter but ya gotta give credit where it's due man!

Arwen Evenstar My wife took me to one of his live concerts in 2015. Wasn't much looking forward to it but....WRONG! The musicianship and Matt's voice were exceptional. One of best gigs I've ever been to and one of the best voices I have ever heard live.

There are literally millions of songs in existence, some will inevitably share similarities. And of course songwriters will inevitably get influenced by other songwriters, both consciously and subconsciously. I don't think that's a reason to kick up a fuss.
Unfortunately, with Marvin Gaye's family suing for Blurred Lines and Tom Petty accusing Sam Smith of plagiarism, I think the precedent has now been well and truly set; from now on songwriters will feel like they're treading on eggshells and will constantly be asking themselves "Oh wait, does this part sound too similar to this song?" and "Is that chord progression too close to that song?" It could seriously affect the quality of songwriting. Artists will end up altering a catchy melody for fear it sounds vaguely like one in another song, whilst others will just not bother writing songs out of fear of being accused of plagiarism.
I hate greedy, deluded people and the people making these sort of claims are greedy and delusional.

Another great fact about Matt, is all his songs are so poetic. Very rare to find.Some artist will start out that way in their careers, but tend to drift off the path. Matt is such a unique artist that i don't think it is possible for him to drift away from what and who he truly is.

Matt Cardle is a talented artist in his own right and he should be more popular than he is because he sings songs from the heart. the real SHAME is that nobody talks about the fact that this guy has just 5 millions wievs, and he ACTUALLY created that melody. The power of the image and the labels is bigger than the power of music though
Ed's song got artificially hyped to high hell bc it was set to become a movie track, too. That also might be the reason why the label/Ed chose to let the issue drag on for 2 years without acknowledging efforts from the chorus writers (not Matt) to get in touch. coz slapping an officially disputed song on a movie might not have gone over so well with the film studio. Promo stunts have become a self-serving farce, and everyone cries how they're burning money doing it, still they can't help themselves.
Matt otoh kept his head down bc he literally had better things to do when the law suit hit. He'd just started his UK tour and even tho he could've done with a bit of promo for that, he cut off all media outreach for over 2 weeks and focussed on making music. He's been pretty consistent with shying away from hyped stunts, too.

I love Ed Sheeran so much. I thought this was going to be like the lawsuit against Justin Beiber. I was prepared to hear one or two notes similar and feel like it was ridiculous like everyone else. But wow...that chorus is almost note for note. I don't know if Ed co-wrote Photograph (might have been a cowriter that came up with the melody), or even when he wrote the song (I know it was about a past relationship that was several years ago, so if he was to have written in whilst they were in relationship this song could have easily just hit the market). Regardless, I feel bad for both parties. As a songwriter myself, sometimes I hope a chorus I write isn't already out there!! But yeah...poor Ed AND poor Matt. Hope everything works out.

Things have long been turned on its head in the music industry. In the last 2 decades it shifted from mainstream radio actually bothering promoting new stuff to blatantly refusing to put anything on that hasn't been promoted by other means. So screw them and actively look for music you like.

I'm majoring in Music Business in college, I can tell you with absolute certainty that if there were any allegations being made quite a while ago, information would have been revealed shortly. When Tom Petty was taking action against Sam Smith, the information was released to the public within days of the initial accusations.
Matt should be thankful? Crazy. Why he has to be thankful? The fact is always a fact, the chorus of both song is exactly the same

1. Don’t leave dislikes on this video because of things that don’t have to do with this song’s singer. The songwriters sued Ed Sheeran, not Matt.
2. As far as I’m concerned, Ed is guilty of plagiarism. I say that as a fan of Ed Sheeran.

Okay, here are my thoughts on the lawsuit-thing...
1. Ed Sheeran is very talented and is really good at song-writing. He writes songs for other musicians. I highly doubt he copied from this song (let's be honest, this song is not very popular and most people had never heard of it before this lawsuit).
2. There are so many millions of songs out there that some of them are going to sound a little bit similar to each other. If I was to come up with a completely original melody right now off of the top of my head, it would probably sound very similar to thousands of other songs.
3. Maybe the chorus of these two songs is a little bit similar, in terms of the melody, but the lyrics are different, the tempo is different, the key is different, the background instruments are different, and even the melody isn't exactly the same, it just is quite similar. And the verses are not the same at all. Ed Sheeran should not be getting sued for this!!
4. 20 million dollars?! That's a bit greedy, if you ask me.
5. Although I think that Photograph is much better than this song, Matt Cardle is very talented, too, and he doesn't deserve the hate he's getting over this. He has nothing to do with the lawsuit...the guys who wrote the song do.

With all of the hundreds of millions of songs being written, can it not be a coincidence that 2 of them sound similar? Ed Sheeran is an extremely good songwriter, he's written a ton of great songs for himself and other musicians. He's also an extremely humble human being. The fact that people actually think he stole someone else's chorus is laughable.

I came here to listen to this song after finding the similarities it shares with Ed Sheeran's "Photograph". After listening closely it seems that the chorus part really have glaring similarities with "Photograph". But I don't mind it because Ed Sheeran is also a good musician. But for what I am most joyful that I found another great singer. I am not into this genre of songs that much so I don't know Ed Sheeran that much as well as Matt beforehand but after listening to this song I realized that I found another magnificent song. But I can't understand why there is so much dislikes to this song! Sometimes blind fan following can lead to a harmful world where the beauty of music losses it's grandeur to the blindness of personal favouritism.
The problem is that Ed is a much more bigger artist and was profiting from someone else's work
