  • Finally the solution for a screen problem on the Roland TD-20 and probably also TD-12 as it uses the same screen. Please make sure to disconnect the mainpower!! Make the repair on your own risk, but know that it is really easy to fix.
I have two TD-20 with the same problem, and both screen problems are solved!

I tried this twice, and initially, it did not work. So I took the boards out and cleaned the ribbons on the bottom, the ones connecting to the screen. It is PERFECT now, just like new!!! Thanks for the tip!

I ordered the contact cleaner just a few minutes ago and going to try what he did on the video. If it works great. If not I'll take it to a local electronic shop and have em do what you did.

My issue was that on the KIT page the upper right quadrant was stable and the other ones were flashing or off and all other pages were completely fine, so I was fearful it was another component about to fail. Gratefully the above process fixed the issue. Certainly not something I would have guessed easily. Thanks Alain!

Muchas gracias.

I had to disassemble the unit all the way to the LCD. Unscrew the LCD from the unit, then remove & clean ( with a contact cleaner) the 2 small ribbons attached to the LCD. That did the trick ! The display is now perfect !

Not sure how long it will last, but seems to have worked. After cleaning the contacts/insertion points on 3 of the ribbons (the small one shown in the video at 1:45, and also the ribbon to the right and the ribbon to the left), I ran the module/played for about 15 minutes; the text was slightly faded in one small area, but the screen was still perfectly readable. Much better than before. Thanks!

This is an excellent video, especially since you could possibly avoid the $200+ that some vendors are charging for an alternate/new screen. However, I had even better results by cleaning the other side of the ribbon too.
It’s simple to remove the main board at this point (only 6 more screws.) Then disconnect all 7 white ribbons and the white plug. Reach in and peel up the black tape holding the display side of the ribbon in place to remove. Hit both ends of the ribbon with electronic cleaner and finish with a microfiber cloth.
Caution!!! I don’t recommend spraying contact cleaner on the plug on the back of the display at first. It may leak down onto the screen and leave a stain. However, if your screen is still only 50% visible after this cleaning… you do the math.
Finally, be sure to hold down the kit button and roll the dial to adjust the contrast for optimal viewing. Best wishes.

Disconnect the ribbon cables in your TDW-20 at your own risk!!
Although this is a good video with potentially helpful information, cleaning the top connection of the display ribbon did not work for me. I then removed 3 larger ribbons and was able to unscrew and pivot a circuit board back so I could access the bottom display connection. I cleaned it too. The whole time I’m doing this I’m noticing thin clear strips of plastic that are separating from the ribbons right at the bare conductor fingers. These strips were attached to the ribbon via adhesive that is now failing. The strips are required for the conductor fingers to properly line up with the female connector block and for a snug fit. After hours of meticulously reglueing these strips back and endless fiddling with the conductor fingers so they were straight, I now have the unit back like it was. Only now the display is totally green, before it was about 40% green. Others on this thread have had the same exact thing happen to them after messing with the bottom connector.
The main point I want to make is these ribbons are not like the quality ones you see with parallel connections in computers where there is a rigid end. These are cheap flimsy crap ribbons that are not made to be disconnected and reconnected multiple times. Disconnect them at your own risk. Shame on Roland, and at one time this was their “flagship” module with a sticker price close to $2K. What would it have cost Roland to use better quality ribbons? I wrote Roland about my display problem a couple days ago. My unit was properly registered with them with the serial number right after purchase. I’m awaiting their reply.

Hello there, I have a TD12 and one of the pots has a fractured solder joint. To get to it, I need to take some of the PCBs out of the unit but the connectors for the ribbon cable don't budge too easy. Is there a knack to removing them?

Unfortunally I have to say that the problem of the screen returned at mine too. I brought it at a repair centre last week. The have measured through the electronics and came to the final conclusion that it must be the display itself as the connections gave nicely responce as the should. It's a big big shame that a leading Company like Roland doesn`t give any support on this global problem. I've got two td20's I paid for €4400,- at the time total and now there useless. Flagship is sinking..........
