What he said is so articulate and true. I am a Ghanaian who had the opportunity of studying in USA and I can promise any African American who is reading this that if you visit Ghana, you would contemplate about moving back......
    1. We as Ghanaians take pride in hospitality...its one of the African value we were brought up with.
    2. Friendly people, Because we believe in the extended family system...it comes naturally
    3. This year our the President of Ghana launched the year of return for African Americans (400 years after slavery)... Its been a massive hit as alot of African Americans are visiting to experience Africa
    4. Tourist sites such as the Cape Coast castle and the El mina Castle gives one an indepth view into how terrible slavery really was.
    5. Ghana is a developing, middle class country... Very enabling for start up businesses.... We need your expertise lol
    6. The weather, food and music is also unique...
    7. The Western Media always portray the dark side and events of other countries and make it seem as if its the whole of africa... That's a lie they intentionally perpetrate to make you believe there is nowhere to go and connect.....

When I lived in Washington DC I knew a few people from Ghana and it was so fun and interesting to talk with them. They were kind and protective as I was only 14 years old and they always made sure I got to the bus or subway safely after visiting their deli. I walked in as a customer one day but within a minute was part of their family 💜

@Am Me When a white person says "they'll never understand" whenever referencing slavery in America, it’s likely what they mean is they’ll never understand the full impact, depth, significance, and legacy of what it means to have a DIRECT attachment and association to the legacy of slavery by way of heritage and ancestral lineage. ENSLAVED AFRICANS were VICTIMS of an American institution and social construct that FORCIBLY extracted FREE LABOR from a specific ethnic group under brutal, inhumane, insufferable, and tortuous conditions for almost 250 years. Behaviors and actions taken by slave owners and associated persons included rape, murder, lynching, breaking up families and sale of said members to far-away plantations, and many other atrocities, etc., etc. Many whites have difficulty internalizing the fact THEIR European ancestors were linked to this brutal institution in any way...in addition to difficulty internalizing the pain, anger, and mixed emotions of Black Americans descended from enslaved Africans. It’s also NOT simply the fact there were whites who didn’t own slaves, the reality is that ALL whites benefited from slavery whether directly or indirectly and have a much more privileged life and generational wealth that was denied enslaved Africans and their descendants.

The date of 1619 and its importance is referenced in numerous history books...it's just barely referenced in schools, and most teachers hate to focus on the details of slavery and its horrors. The extent to which American public schools present instruction on the brutality and horrors of slavery is glossed over in most public, private, charter schools, and even most universities...which is why most Americans are lacking serious knowledge on the subject. The people who are knowledgeable and informed are the types who generally conduct individual study and investigative research well AFTER they graduate high school and/or college. The simple fact is that most Americans don’t WANT to know, they’re content in their blind ignorance of slavery and its inhumanity and suffering committed against ENSLAVED AFRICANS.

Events of the past directly inform the future. It’s truly unfortunate that most Americans demonstrate high-level unawareness on a topic that is an important part of American history that most leaders and general U.S. society make a DELIBERATE effort to avoid based on slavery’s many associated evils. Slavery’s associated EVILS include brutality, inhumanity, insufferable and impossible conditions, a tortuous institution that goes on for centuries and includes raping, lynching, murder, torture, selling of family members to far-away plantations, and denying basic rights and dignity to other human beings for almost 250 years. There is a DIRECT and straight line from slavery to Jim Crow segregation, KKK vigilante violence, domestic terrorism committed against ENSLAVED AFRICANS and their descendants (i.e. - Black Americans), and the denial of basic civil rights and generational wealth-building opportunities to Black Americans for centuries. Slavery and the negative treatment of Black Americans AFTER slavery are the MAIN REASONS for the 3000-mile wide wealth gap between Blacks and whites in America. There is CONTINUED racism, discrimination, inequality, and mistreatment against Black Americans to this day, and ALL of that negativity has its roots and origins in slavery.

The 1619 project, despite some historical inaccuracies, can be a great opportunity to bridge many of the divides plaguing the US today but every time someone takes advantage of the momentum to introduce the ridiculous idea of reparations the whole thing goes out the window. What would a reparations initiative even look like? It's one thing to say that the government should invest more in schools in poorer neighborhoods and especially black neighborhoods, but reparations? How would that work? Cultural divides aren't healed with money. The atrocities of slavery can't be repaired with money. The can't be repaired at all. All we can do is learn and move on towards an equal society.

As we are welcoming our brothers and sisters in in the diaspora and encouraging to return, own the resources, create wealth and opportunities, I wish every Ghanaian will be conscious of the prospect of this enterprise and change their attitude in providing public services and uphold moral principles to get rid of the deep rooted corruption in them so development of the country can take flight. @@4daluvofnikki Meghan would have screwed the discussion - she doesn't trust herself...or maybe the producers can't trust her NOT to make ignorant statements. M. McCain is the type who will somehow twist the brutal narrative of ENSLAVED AFRICANS by mentioning her father or some other family member and how they were SO "courageous" in trying to end the scourge of slavery in America. In her mind, even slavery has to be about white people. The LAST THING a hardcore Republican Conservative wants to talk about is slavery. As far as most Conservatives are concerned..."slavery was a long time ago" - "ALL the slaves are now long gone" - "slavery wasn't REALLY that bad" - and the all-time favorite line..."Black people need to get over it already"...a statement NO ONE EVER SAYS to Jewish Americans when referencing the Nazi Holocaust.

A flight to Ghana and back to Philadelphia isn't remotely affordable for working class Black people. This is a tourist scheme to get people to spend more than they have or to have Ghana visited by thousands of Black celebs. Win win for Ghana however the honest conversation of the slave trades(European and Arab) still needs to take place. There needs to be accountability and acceptance. I would love the opportunity to go to the continent of Africa but I feel it's disingenuous to romanticize Ghana like it's an African utopia. We don't need perfection just the truth and pathway to true peace within ourselves and around us as descendants of enslaved Africans.

Boris is an odd choice to talk about this subject. I felt he spent more time selling tourism to his father homeland, Ghana. Boris was born in Europe to a German mother. Nikole's mother is also European(Czech) and her father a black American. She deferred to Boris on the subject of reparations. HUH? Boris was talking like our people only came from one country in Africa. We cannot view his father homeland and people as the same of us. Too many years have past. 400 years is a long time and beside people's culture change with time. The culture practiced in Ghana today may not have been the same as it was 300 to 400 years ago. Different tribes had different cultures within the same country and region. There is no going back or re-do. Slavery tourism is cruel, because it preys on our emotions. You sold our ancestors for profit and now you want to profit off us again. Sorry-NOT-Sorry!

    • @kevinc3342

Agreed - the conversation on reparations should have been discussed by Mrs. Hannah-Jones. Boris Kodjoe is fine for general information, but specialty topics need to be discussed by the person(s) intimately tied to the 1619 Project. Kodjoe offered a nice summary and basic explanation, but he tap-danced and bit and didn't even answer the host's question regarding whether or not and/or when Black Americans should and might receive reparations. He could have been absent and Hannah-Jones could have been the lone guest. Kudjoe's talking points on Ghana should have been its own segment at a later date. I don't know why people are giving Sunny Hostin a hard time when she presents the question on reparations. Other groups screamed VERY LOUDLY, protested, and received reparations for their historical suffering…but apparently it's a problem when Black people do the same. The U.S. government has been ducking this issue since 1865, because the reality is the U.S. government and general U.S. society feels no obligation to pay its debt to Black descendants of enslaved Africans.
