Just as she finished the song, I spoke to a guy sitting right behind me and said damn, that was fantastic....he immediately agreed. Hey, you look a lot like Les Paul! His response, I am Les Paul.

I'm pretty sure the woman in the photo is not the woman shown singing in this video, but I'm going to search for the photo. I must know if maybe it is the same woman! To which, I wish I had replied: Maybe she IS a complete natural, and her singing is as effortless as it seems. But could YOU do it?? I know I couldn't. Her intonation is perfert, her diction is flawless, her phrasing is right on. This is a perfect performance, and it is live to boot. Go ahead - give it a shot - and you'll find out just how much know-how went into singing this song!

@@euumapessoa5427 I respectfully disagree. The best singer for this song was Astrud's ex-husband, João Gilberto, sitting by himself on a simple chair, singing and playing his acoustic guitar. He was able to use his voice and the guitar's sound in a way that the listener wouldn't be able to distinguish between the sound of the instrument from that of his human voice. Tom Jobim was the composer and interpreter of that. He wrote it jointly with his friend, the poet and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes.

*Ray Manzarek and Morrison were both 'Cool Jazz' and Sinatra fans, as well as
'Klezmer' and 'Three-Penny Opera'-type music and German 'Sturm und Drang' tunes from the 20's and '30's*

Bosa Nova days. And my wife and I saw Jimi at Woodstock in 1969...after we got married in March.

While Helô inspired the song, it was another Carioca who carried it beyond Rio. Astrud Gilberto was the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered an NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English.
Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape.
A year later, the song was casting its quiet spell of sea and sand on the charts, washing past the Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” It peaked in mid-June at No. 5, selling over two million copies.
“The Girl From Ipanema” went on to become the second-most recorded popular song in history, behind “Yesterday.” Covered by an A-Z gamut of performers.

*Only the 'Beatles' knocked down' the 'Beatles'...in 1964, they out-sold every recording artist(s) COMBINED!*
*At one point, they held the 'Top 3' charting positions according to 'BillBoard' with three different tunes taking turns at the '#1' position*
(Am I discrediting your 'Comment?' No, but to give the impression that "Ipanema'
somehow eclipsed "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is pure fantasy)
