- So when the announcement was made last year (2023) of a Pixies + Modest Mouse + Cat Power traveling carnival I immediately plotted to go see the Chicago edition, which was held at the excellent Salt Shed. The night was fabulous and fun was had by all. You can see that concert here:

When a year later the same bill was announced, I figured that the kids were all having fun and did I really need version Two of what had already been a memorable version One? why yes. The answer was clearly yes.
-----
This time, the concert was held at the gorgeous Huntington Pavilion at Northerly Island, which lends itself to a just all-around great day if you want to hit up the aquarium, the museum, etc. Moreover, looking at setlists, the bands were clearly mixing it up and (gasp!), Pixies were playing a whole lotta Bossanova, clearly the underrated gem in their discography. I will say it again, the band could play twice as long and not hit every wish and desire.
-----
The band indeed played some Bossanova, but sadly, no 'Rock Music', 'Cecilia Ann', or 'Dig for Fire' on the menu. But hearing 'Velouria' was a highlight, as was 'All over the World'. This year, I planted myself on Joey's side of the stage so I could do some loving shots of the master at play shredding on his soaring leads.
-----
Now kids, pull up a chair I'm gonna tell you a story. Back in 1989, Pixies made their live TV debut on the David Sanborn-hosted 'Night Music'. I had not been hip enough to know about Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim, but I had witnessed discussions about the band by staff at the venerable Shake Records in Ottawa, Canada. The day in question, as I browsed around they were discussing posters going up on the walls and the T-shirts they would be selling as promotional merch.
-----
So I knew a new album was coming and it would be huge. But I'd yet to actually hear the band. Enter the version of 'Monkey Gone to Heaven' played on 'Night Music', which simultaneously melted my face and made me fall in love with Kim Deal:

That bit when Black Francis says "Rock me Joey", then Joey's short solo kicks in and that gorgeous interplay of the guitars when the second guitar enters gets me every single time. Still a fan, 35 years later. Definitely a desert island track...even if it came down to a single track...or maybe 'You made me Realise' by MBV...too damn close to call.
ps. please go out and see these bands and support them by purchasing their merch!!!

Thank you so much for this!!! Amazing performance
The whole thing, the performance, the lighting, all so very, very good....
velouria 🖤
I know.....I know....It was truly epic. I loved seeing Joey muck around with his effects pedals to get the little electronicky sounds at the beginning...
One of their best!
I see why they replaced Paz. Emma can sing. This allowed them to open up the catalog. The Happening, for example.
I was supposed to see them in Madison. It got rained out and canceled. Super super disappointed
Sorry to hear that....that's why I post these, for those who were there to relive the show and for those who couldn't be there!
What is the song they walk out too? The lyric is something like "You know my name."
You know my name by the Beatles? ps. that's what it said in the setlist.fm entry for the show.
