Witchcraft: Going Over the Hedge

  • Going over the Hedge, the Fence, or some other metaphorical structure, is often a concept we find in discussions of WitchCraft (Traditional Folk Beliefs); the idea of stepping over boundaries, transgressing or transcending the limitations of the mudane world and step into the wilderness for the sake of the Craft and to commune with the Others. But what does this mean in terms of the transformation of our own perception in order to establish an animistic world-view? This is what I'm going to try to discuss in this video. I hope you find it useful.

@Dennis Plum pretty strange how under a spiritualist video, youd conveniently ignore the context and history which brings people to their actions ? There are so many global reasons why people would begin to gatekeep culture, dont speak as if thats not part of an energetic cycle in of itself . Sadly, people were put in positions where culture needed to be defended and owned . Now, people want to preserve and reclaim said cultures . Its more a shame that those people cant be understood by some than it is that they exist in their predicament . Not everything is "yours"

A difficult concept explained well. I'm very grateful for your erudite descriptions. Long ago in my late teens and twenties I began a journey to "discover my feral self". As someone I was reading put it, to remember my creaturehood. In the process of doing this I discovered the immense amount of conditioning we are all subject to that leads to the idea that humans are separate from the rest of the fabric of life which I was never able to accept. I was fortunate to have had relatively open parents, teachers and peers that accepted my "nature-boy" ideas as long as I kept a job and acted normal. I'm 72 this weekend and I've grown to react to most people the way squirrels, birds and deer do...I want to run like hell!

Rae Beth's first book, Hedge Witch (mentioned at the start of the video) is a book about Wicca, not Hedge Witchcraft. In subsequent books, however, she delves deeper into the practice of riding the hedge, crossing boundaries, working with the Fair Folk, etc. There have been a few books since Rae Beth's works that focus on the trance and animistic practices involved in Hedge Witchcraft, including my own which just came out for Kindle in October and the paperback coming out 8 November. Hedge Witchcraft is about working with the Otherworld and this world, to better understand and to inform us of different perceptions from those allies that we work with when we are crossing the hedge. Through various trance practices, we can connect to the Otherworld in order to gleam information and inspiration to take back with us to "mundane" reality :)

As a Hedge Rider, I am fluid in my "beliefs", animistic in my approach, and let the spirit world to help me build understanding of this 'other'. I wasn't raised religious both in my home culture but also my small communities culture. So, I am able to get out of the shackles of religious bondage.
Entheogens are the spirit of flora opening the door, and then let my magical actions play their part in the web. Hedgewytchery that I was shown is very open and fluid, no rigidity or dogma... only understanding and walking the path, while engaging the world magically.

I live in Canada, and feel lighter as the video goes along. Straddling cultures is exhausting, and lacking a sense of place is alienating. As a child, I felt profoundly connected to tides, plants, earth and sky. No words. This place holds beautiful, compelling landscapes. Hard to describe how immense at times. I did not feel like I was allowed to love it, though. Not possession, but as a being in such a place as this. I can relate to abandonment of labels by tuning into those early sensations of love and natural absorption, of this bigness and embracing nature. I stood on a beach in Scotland as an adult, and felt like I was seeing it through eyes from the past. I loved it too, tide and sky. A label broke off then too, and floated away. Love returns slowly, wave by wave. Thank you.

Thank you Arith for a very good video! In my personal experience, entities of the spirit world are often suspicious towards us humans - and for very good reasons. We are after all destroying their homes. This world, this universe, this very existence, is not about us human beings. The world wasn't created to tickle our egos - nor for our betterment or salvation. We are just one of the forces active into this world. And we are a force of destruction. The more contact I have with the sprit world, the more of my humanity I leave behind. This I see as a good thing. When we are crossing that border we aren't leaving the world. We are going inside the world. Hope any of what I just wrote made sense to at least someone...

I'm a real Hedgewitch. And have been practicing long before this book came out.
It's basically folk magic, Witchcraft, and Shamanic practices all entwined around what is known as Ancient Magic and or Natural Magic. Transition is the key to all Hedgewitchery. We have jobs, we work for our wages, we don't have need to make a career of being a Hedgewitch. So that's some of what real Hedgewitchery is about. It's not being the Naturalist, but a Naturalist can be a Hedgewitch. And we don't rely too much in deities either. We work with the spirits of local lore, or even mythology whenever we Ride The Hedge, in order to have a manifestation to come about.

As we get older, a few continue to believe and play in those moments as a form of escape if under duress or in a way to deal with childhood PTSD. Yet, most of us loose this as our blank slate is filled with education, world news, other people's opinions. Thank you for talking about this. Still today it's hard to ditch labels and some identifications are quite useful to survive within human society, but life and the world isn't just living within human society. All humans have the instinct, the impulse, to seek out nature, and out there self-identifications are of little consequence. Nature humbles us. Be well my friend and thank you! Amanita Muscaria is free of any ideology or identity, it's use is very individual, there is no one size fits all and you have to establish your personal relationship with it over time, and only then you can tap into what I call magical synchronicity, higher wisdom, knowledge of the old...which we have lost access too.

Thank you Arith ! Great content. I believe your videos are seen on the Other side, as I sometimes have special dreams about it before you post it. This time the clue was your red belt and the link with the spirits conexion... last time was a symbol you talked about in another video (dreamed of it the night before you posted the video). Strange ! But awesome :)

I really found this to be an insightful video, especially the concept of opening oneself to alternative perceptions, abandoning readily held beliefs before doing anything! I’ve been studying witchcraft for about four years and have been very sceptical of witchcraft in general until listening to you. Thank you.

Person of the world. You have encapsulated something that has always been a part of my practice, and I rarely hear in witch craft discussions. The bird doesn’t care about what language you speak, what borders on a map it flies over, and the bird couldn’t care less about the color of our skin.
Beyond the hedge, we are persons of the world.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.

I think I'm lucky to have found your videos on both the witch craft and the archeology. I have been talking to some people recently that say they are witch or craft or whatever but don't get what others of us are talking about when we talk about others or truly connecting with the other world around us. One thing I noticed was that there was a difference in mind set between those that the closest they ever got to nature was the city park. While others of us were blessed with actually getting to live surrounded by it. I grew up in the city but every summer I was in the middle of the woods nowhere with my great great aunt. Then when I was 20 the x and I got a house out in the middle of the woods. For me the woods were always more real then other places. Ya even living in the middle of the woods especially where I lived and raised my daughter I still had to put up with small town, small minded people, but at home in the woods walking the land is always when I'm my truest self. It also probably doesn't hurt that before I really understood what my great great aunt was teaching me, she was teaching me. Her folk magic was Ozark Mountain magic and since then I have built on that. I lost the house in 08 but my Drs were actually happy about that because it took to long for any help to get to me and this is also the time I became disabled. So now I live in a small to more large city depends on the time of year because it's a college town, I sometimes go weeks without going anywhere except drs appointments being at home doesn't bother me to bad because I can still go over the hedge even being stuck inside because I had already established relationships with others long ago, what does get to me especially during the warmer weather is not having a quiet place in the woods to go to anymore, not even for a few hours because that's where I'm truly totally myself. I don't hide who I am from my friends that are other but I hate how I sometimes have to put up with some flesh and blood people other than my husband and daughter. These days im a lot like the gentleman who already commented, when it comes to people I want to do like the bird's and other animals and run like hell away from them. I don't know if it's a blessing our a curse sometimes that much of my magic is visualization magic but it is what it is and to be honest I wouldn't change it for the world nor the fact that when I was young I learned to talk to the land and I learned to be able to just be still and listen to it. It seems I am finding more and more that the big gap is between those that never really got to truly be in nature and those that did that makes it hard to explain to someone how you connect with others on the other side of the hedge when even though they say craft and nature believing they really don't know what nature is and you I guess you don't really need that but it does seem to make it much harder for them. So if anyone has any tips to help me explain that would be great. I believe we all have our own true hearts path to walk but I also believe we should help each other where we can, so I get frustrated with myself that I can't seem to be able to explain it better, sounds dumb I know but that's just how I've always been, but probably because I was lucky enough to find some good teachers when I was young without even looking or for that matter even really realizing they were teaching me until many years later. Blessings Be everyone.

Thank you for this video, sir. It was enlightening. Enlightening yes, but not because the concepts you speak of are new to me. The happy "surprise" of this video is to see someone whose understanding appears to have developed along parallel lines to my own. I'm a "young" 65-year-old now but my magickal path has been long and winding, taking me through several religious-spiritual traditions from Christianity to "New Age" manifestation to Eclectic Wicca to Paganism to -you get the idea! At long last, I arrived at the very same conclusions you express in your video. In the end, I developed my own personal "tradition" of magick that is wonderfully powerful and practical for everyday, mundane use. Like you, I don't promote myself as anybody special- I have always preached that EVERYONE has a powerful spiritual/magickal NATURE that only waits to be developed.
THANK YOU again, sir! I subscribed to your channel and hope to see more excellent programs.

I am a western Magick practitioner, that said, I seek to use language that is respectful to any and all paths.
I do see the idea of disengagement with ego and preconditioned thought structures.
However, I also don't know how to feel about casting away traditional magical knowledge.
I may be wrong of course.
But, I feel like if I am told to expect a spirit to act, or look a certain way, shouldn't I listen?
I feel like I am being disrespectful to those men and women who died for their magical work. Died to give us this knowledge.
Also, if awakening is all about atonement ih divinity. Why were we ever born?
This was an absolutely awesome video. And I agree mostly too. Not that I am anyone to listen to.
I would love to learn more. Thank you. And if I've offended anyone, I apologize. It is from a place of ignorance not hate.

This is such a wonderful breath of fresh air.
Just as your expectations, mannerisms, perceptions and actions change to communicate and interact with other worldly beings like our pets, children, differently abled people or a boss, we have to adjust ourselves to communicate/interact with otherworldly entities/forces/powers. Not one or the others care or understand your mundane problems, origins or status.
So be who you are, do what comes naturally to you, and adapt.
To work with otherworldly forces, WE have to change for and respect them, and not the other way around.

You are a few philosopher. It is true I changed so much through my quest to encounter spirits of Nature. The thing that really changed is my pride, I thought I deserved things because I was myself. But in the Other realm spirits defie you and put you on trial, they can be angry or fearful, they are rarely the good fairy. While you learn all that, you recall your wild side.

Your capacity to express this concepts as things we as the viewer can digest with benefit to us rather than any insinuation that you have a knowledge we don't is a wonderful, practical example of exactly what I think it is you are conveying (that the beginnings of witchcraft are about grasping that your being and needs and mind and will may differ drastically from any energy you attempt to connect with). That integrity makes the content very inviting, and I thank you for being in integrity with your message!

I wanted to cry out "But labels help you know you are a zebra and not a failure of a horse!" and "But the spirits do live on the land, spirits don't care about borders but they do occupy space like us, and you should connect to local spirits not spirits from far far away!" and you went on, your voice letting me know that everything will be okay. And that was such a calming feeling that I do not think I can capture in words. Thank you.

Hello, from the USA, Earth. I wish to understand the unseen others and understand their intentions. Do they label themselves as well? Can we understand their dimension? How do they perceive the matter world? Do they cause harm or do they follow any concepts of 'cause no harm'? Can they be trusted or do they always follow their inherent, pre-determined impulses? Do they have unique personalities? Do they believe in a Creator (not a human-envisioned God) but a creative force that weaves throughout everything? Can we create avatars of thought that can visit and share thoughts with one another?

That being said, this video made me think of 'Freedom from the Known' by Jiddu Krishnamurti, my philosophy teacher was an ex Sufi and student of Krishnamurti for ten years, and he taught several philosophy courses but the only physical text he assigned (there was alot of reading and videos and online class shat sessions and meet ups) was 'Freedom from the Know', I took his courses for three semesters so I went over the book again and again, and the audio book on You Tube (the one that sounds good). I've been living over the hedge for a long time. My nearest neighbor right now is over half a mile. This year marks my 43rd archery season. I view things a little differently. I feel compelled to jot a little down.
Eight million years ago climate change started to eliminate the woods for an ape ancestor. To solve this problem they started to walk greater and greater distances for resources. They became bipedal. One after another they solved many problems. They made fire as a solution, napped flint as a solution, took care of others as a long term solution etc. Solving problems became essential and shaped us. If you couldn't solve the problem that was the ice age, you died off.
Your direct ancestors solved problems with producing crops, domesticating animals, written language. If your ancestor didn't solve the problem of the plague you wouldn't be here. On and on continuing to solve, dying off if you couldn't shaped how you currently are.
Now look at you. Everything you own is a solution to a problem (your shoes, your car, your glasses, etc). You watch movies to see how others solve problems. If you don't like the problem you don't like the movie. When you go to the mall or store you go looking for solutions. You want to win the lottery just so you could solve any problem. You even solve problems when you are dead with life insurance.
In your video you wear a sweat shirt that solves a problem, pants that solve a problem, microphone that solves a problem.
Your idea of going over the hedge and throwing away indoctrinations and preconceived notions because you weren't getting results is a way to solve problems. You can't get away from it no matter how hard you try.
Certain religions throw away worldly possessions (solutions to problems). They find peace. IDK
BTW I definitely feel a force in the woods but I'm not into witchcraft. Henry David Thoreau nailed it on a canoe trip to Maine.
    Keep searching.
