  • The one Monarch chrysalis we have had so far in our milkweed patch this season successfully delivered an emerging (aka eclosing) butterfly yesterday.
Unfortunately, I misread how imminent the emergence was (I clearly still have a lot to learn!), so in my doodling around with my camera gear without a sense of urgency, I missed filming the actual eclosing, but here still is some fantastic footage of the new male Monarch.
My miscue also helps me keep this all in perspective. While the videography aspect of all this is cool, I am reminded that we started this patch back in 2016 for the primary purpose of aiding a beleaguered species. Glad we've contributed to sending off at least one guy to Mexico this year. Todo bien.
P.S. This video encapsulates about a four-hour period. A brand new Monarch butterfly spends a lot of time during its first few hours just sitting perfectly still.
