Bob Dylan was a Woody Guthrie listener. Even his lyrics were inspired by Dylan Thomas, the great British poet. Do you enjoy getting Zeppelin fans riled? Yep, it worked on me. 🙄

Dynamics baby! The song was written by Anne Bredon in the late 1950's and originally recorded by Joan Baez in 1962. Her version is quite folksy, like a song you might have heard sitting around a camp fire during a coal miner's strike in the 1920's. And while plaintive, her voice doesn't crack with angst the way Plant's does. It should go without saying, but the Led Zeppelin version is souped-up considerably.

It was originally written by Anne Bredon. Baez "rearranged" it and released it without crediting Bredon. Page took Baez' version and credited it as "Tradtional Arr. Page". Eventually, Page's economy of the truth caught up with him and Bredon received back royalties. So, yeah, a great cover version.

He was able to finance LZ-1 and nobody controlled them, but everybody in the industry were connected and pissed they did it there way, the critics were told what to say, the dj's were told what to play and their songs weren't 2:30 with a good beat and easy to dance to, which really opened up FM. The money barons never considered how good the music really was, that's why we're still talking about them 50 years later

And yes with the headphones you hear the different arrangements from here to here you might hear something that’s like above your head but really faint is just amazing how page engineered all the stuff. Simply amazing this song is a cover from Joanne buyers. And if I’m pretty sure that her version is a cover as well. The song is about a man going off to war. It’s not a break up song is not anything of that nature it’s about a man going off to war and expressing how he feels. Awesome reaction you shook me is next, the blues remake and then there’s days are confused the studio version. Which you really should listen to because that live version you have listen to before they were still working through it. Rubber plants voice is amazing

Zeppelin's songs often fall loosely into two categories. Songs about meeting/loving/loosing, women. And songs about myths/legends/fantasy. 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' is one that crosses both themes. Plant would often tie in elements of 'home' being some place he has to go and can't come back from. 'Home' is possibly 'heaven,' so he could be an angel, and she will be there with him one day. It's one interpretation...

I love the way you approach things for sure man. I'm nearly 60 and grow up with this stuff and I'm a musician and I can tell you really completely get this stuff. It would be great to hang out with you and play some music sometime, obviously and some other reality, laugh. It would be fun though for sure.

I think if you've never been hit with wanderlust, this song won't ever make sense to you.
What's calling him? The road, Sweetheart. The need to break out of everything you've dug yourself into. All the familiarity, even the things you love. The call to be born into the mystic.

"I can hear it calling me back home" has a dual meaning here...so background, this is a cover of an Anne Bredon song (which Page didnt know when he credited it as "traditional" as did the others that covered it before LZ). The original Bredon meaning is something like trying to escape an abusive relationship and failing. Many people interpret LZs version as a longing to return to addiction, I've got to leave you...I can hear it calling me, but to me that seems wrong (this song was track 2 on their first album, wayyyyy before any of them got into drugs/alcohol) just based on timing. Some think its robert plants desire to chase his music career despite having promised his gf: "if I haven't made it by my 20th birthday (August 20, 1968) I'll quit"...he met jimmy page in late July 1968, their first live show was September 7th, and the album this song appeared on was recorded on September 27th 1968 and released in January 1969...some think this is an ode to his future wife of apology...but hey...it worked out :)
it sounds like a love song to me, but he loves two things equally and intensely, misses both, longs for both, but to be with one is to be temporarily without the other... It suits their overall theme that love is often agony (nearly their whole catalogue are love songs btw)

i could be wrong, but I think this song is talking about a man who is being called to war and must leave his woman behind. Many artists of the time had fathers or relatives who served in WW2, especially those from Great Britain.

I thought it was, but he say "I can hear it calling me back home". Could be a man the loves a woman but can't get over the love for his land and people. I relate strongly with that, since ive been leaving away from home for 15 years, and I rather be on my own than jeopardizing my chances to go see my familly every year.
Then again, it could be a man leaving a double life and talking to his mistress.
I like the soldier theory more, its a sad and strong approach, but can hardly imagine anyone calling war "home", unless he's living far away and there's war at his land, but that sounds a little too intricate.
Anyway, the beauty about art is that is subjective, it's all about perspective. No matter the story you make up for it, it's beautiful and intense in your own mind.

    • @s1d299
      @s1d299 Před 4 lety +19

War isn't rambling, nor is it home. I don't think war makes sense here. I think it's talking about a man who has "rambling" in his blood; he just doesn't take well to staying in one place. He's with a woman who wants to stay where she is, so he has to choose, and it pulls him apart emotionally. That leads to the schizo lyrics about "I'm gonna leave you" and "I'm never never never gonna leave you".
When he says "we're gonna go walking in the park every day" I think he's anticipating settling down with this woman someday in the future, once he's done "rambling".
      JMO.

Loved your reaction to Zep. I have watched quite a few reactions to Zep and it amazes me how many young black people seem to really get the music. I am asking an honest question--can you explain why that is? I know music transcends everything, but it is puzzling why so many young people are listening when they used to just listen to rap and hip hop. Many whites did not get Zep when I was young ( I was 15 when I first heard them), so I am loving the reactions of today's young people. Cheers
