A Netflix-sponsored anime school in Japan is training a new generation of animators as demand for the genre has soared in recent years. From runaway hit Demon Slayer to Cannes sensation Belle, anime has drawn in hordes of new fans and evolved far beyond its reputation as a subculture. The streaming giant is funding the WIT Animation Academy to offer a free six-month course and stipend to aspiring talents, a rare move in an industry known for low pay and long hours.

The solution isn't to train more artists, its to improve the working requirements and pay that comes from animating. Training more artists is a band-aid fix that wont work long term.

That definitely seems to be the case. Just by looking at artists online who would’ve liked to become animators, it seems like it’s not a case of not having enough of them but simply because they are not willing to endanger their health and destroy their personal lives with low wages and long work hours. Actually double the pay ‘which they could do’ and cut there working hours to about 9-5 or at most 9-6 each working day and they’d be flooding in.

It’s not a bad idea on paper, but we’re dealing with Netflix here, which changes the context entirely. Art schools end up stemming from personal passion to industrial, so it differs a noticeable amount to specialized schools. This is merely creating a endless factory of animator for chump change, which exacerbates the current issue the anime industry has had for many decades.
Not only does it devalue any current animator in the field but it also leads an even higher competition the industry have. This is basically Netflix’s attempt at monopolizing anime industry and making the current industry worse in the long run because this means you’re easily replaceable if you’re not overperforming as we’re dealing with Japanese work culture here.
Animators are already overworked and overexploited, this makes the problems WORSE.

Netflix wants to compete crunchy roll and streams animes like Komi San can’t communicate, Citrus, bloom into you, guilty crown and some other isekai animes whom no one wants to watch, and animes like Naruto Shipuden, Attack on Titan, rising of the shield hero, wise man’s grandchild has no trace on Netflix. Wow.

The problem isn’t our industries lacking skilled workers. The problem lies in very underpaid skilled workers. This being the same in most industries today. 214% turnover rate where I work. Not because our workers aren’t skilled. They will not work the hard job for the easy jobs pay.

Fixing the undersupply of animators this way worsens the already low wage these animators get. I think this should be done in conjunction with more schools that specialize in directing/production, to introduce more studios(a long way though). That way, (1) wages go up, (2) the shortage of animators is fixed, and (3) we do not compromise too severely on animation quality with an excess of comparably unskilled animators.

Even though the industry is $24bn, there are many involvements other than animators! Also, their budgets are rather small compared to US productions... Usually it takes just 1mn dollars to make a 12 episode season... So, imagine a studio with 20-30 workers working on that....
Even Stuart little had 100+ million USD budget while ufotable used roughly 30+ million to make a heaven's feel movie!

Well they could pay the same wage in dollar amounts to animators in Japan or China or Vietnam but due to disparate currencies in one place it will look like a low wage and in another it will look like a high wage.
Netflix best bet is to raise animators in weak currency countries but buy licencing right of popular manga stories from Japan. To keep the quality, have Japanese directors managing the project and storyline but let the grunts draw everything else.

  • @ALGOChannel

It's funny enough that the VA is paid more than animators. It's a massive wages difference. Pay the animators more because drawing that many frame with a short amount of brake would definitely increases injuries to the forearm and a higher chance to get a carpal tunnel syndrome.
