    As a person with PCOS the Nuva Ring is the only one not currently giving me issues. The patch used to be my go-to but then I developed a skin allergy to the adhesive. Tried the shot and that F***ed me up. Exacerbated my PCOS and I was super depressed. Also got a couple of epigenetic conditions I can’t reverse. Oh joy. Got the iud and that also messed me up big time, cystic acne galore. Lots of cramping because my body was trying to expel it. No one told me about the progesterone on it which is no bueno for PCOS. The Nuva ring is a great middle ground. Some pills are better for PCOS but I am not the best at remembering so I don’t want to deal with the side effects that comes with being wishy woshy on the pill.

      It worked for me too but for some reason it started to hurt me and bleeding so I had to take it off :( then I went to the doctor and it was my ph that got altered due the ring and then created an infection..
      Which is sad because I was using it for a year and some and loving that...

    Wow my doctors never told me that there would be a transitional emotional period of three months (granted this was over six years) and they were aware of my mental health diagnoses. I went through emotional hell due to the nuva ring and was not told that would happen at all. This was very informational thank you!
    Also I've utilized Planned Parenthood in the past for testing but thank you for reminding me that they are a great resource for contraception concerns. Just thank you for this video!

      I’m hoping to have a hysterectomy, well half of one to finish off the job. I have a reproductive organ deformity, less than 0.1% of the world have it, where the left side of my uterus was severely deformed and Underdeveloped, and was completely detached from the other side and floating around. I have a lot of reproductive organ issues outside of that, and unfortunately, removing the significantly deformed side didn’t help.
      I’ve been on well over nine birth controls to no avail, customized even, some do better than others, but then they stop helping. Doesn’t help I have severe allergies to the majority of birth controls. The Nuvaring was mentioned, which is why I’ve been watching this video. Though, my gynecologists are in agreement that a hysterectomy could be a viable option in the future. Though, I wish they would just get it over with.. I already am severely disabled, and having these reproductive organ issues for many years makes me feel so much worse.

    About not being able to find tampons light enough for your flow, have you ever tried a menstrual cup? It takes some getting used to and not everyone likes how it feels, but it can be used at basically any heaviness level, and I've found it to be SO SO MUCH BETTER than tampons on those very light days. Plus I don't have to worry about buying things or running out, all I need is to boil the cup after my period is done and I'm ready for next month.

    The ring was such a life saver for me. I was on the birth control pill for a few years (two times even) and it wrecked me, my mental health was at an all time low, my libido.. was just gone. Entirely. I stopped taking it but then I dealt with constant anxiety around protection, chances of pregnancy etc. Meanwhile that ring is just in there doing its thing, I don't notice it, it never fell out for me over the past 2 years or so and the only noticeable side-effect is the one you mentioned: increased dryness. But thankfully that can be fixed a lot more easily than literal depression from the birth control pill. I don't even need to take it out for regular gyn checkups, she just always asks me how my experience is with the ring because a lot of women fear the ring won't be "placed correctly" and not work - meanwhile, as long as that thing is inside you and your body temperature isn't literally < 30 °C (so you're kinda dead), you're good. The first few weeks I kept checking if it's still there, but man, that thing is fantastic. And because I occasionally have alcohol, I don't fear it getting mixed with birth control pills somehow, and the overall dose of hormones I get from the ring is also significantly smaller, hence the significantly lessened side effects probably. Didn't know something so small could give me such a quality of life improvement.

      Hi there, I'm 19 and I'm about to finally start trying birth control. I want to try the Nuvaring but the thing you said about increased dryness, how would you fix or improve that? I don't know too much about it besides staying hydrated. Thank you. :)

    • @Minale__
      @Minale__ Před 2 lety +1

      @@withlovefalseortrue9839 The dryness is honestly not a big deal, there are tons of products that help. You may just have to get used to always having a tube of lube ready before intercourse (makes it much better anyway), and maybe occasionally use a bit of lube specifically designed to deal with dryness, e.g. when you're struggling with tampons or periods cups or something (you should be able to find that at any drugstore, because dryness is also a common problem during/after menopause - many people with vaginas deal with that). Having lube ready at all times honestly made me more spontaneous because you can jump right into it if you feel like it, and it makes foreplay more fun, too. So the increased dryness has pretty much improved my sex life hahah.

      Your comment made me very happy to hear. I (21f) suffer from depression and anxiety disorder. I took birth control pills for about a year with that 4 month window of near-suicidal tendencies that were dismissed by nurses as normal. I was pretty much manic, extremely anxious and depressed, and would cry a lot on the pill and it near ruined me. About 2 years later (today) I'm ready to try a new contraceptive, and as I don't want an implant or a patch, I went with the nuvaring. I'm about to try it out and you made me a lot less anxious about giving it another try due to it being less of a dose and less side effects. If this doesn't work out, I don't know what will

    I loved the NuvaRing because I could skip my period and it was super convenient, but holy shit, I could not deal with how it really fucked with my vaginal pH. I got 4 yeast infections over the year I was on NuvaRing. I’m very happy with the patch now. I did get some slight skin irritation the first couple patches, but it kinda just stopped somehow. My biggest complaint with the patch is that they highly recommend you don’t skip your period with it because it has a higher risk of blood clots, but other than that I’ve been personally very happy with it.

    I think they need to give AFAB people a seminar on all the forms or birth control and the pros/cons of all. All my friends and I have spent years trying to find the right method for us.
    And lifestyle is a huge factor. I used to travel for work and change time zones all the time with a very unpredictable schedule. I am so glad I found out about IUDs because cramps suck but the rest of the time you don’t worry about it and you aren’t stuck single in a country where pre marital sex is illegal deciding if you try to get another depo shot or just go off birth control in the middle of a job.

  • @elizabethingermann5911
    @elizabethingermann5911 Před 2 lety +5

    As someone who also has used the nuva ring for a few years, here's my experience. I never feel it until I reach in to pull it out. I don't feel it during sex, but a couple of times it has come out during the act but you just shove it back in, and it's fine. I use the 3 weeks on - one week off method because if I try to go straight through, I have my period anyway then spot until I finally leave the ring out for that week. So that's my weird side effect the doctors forget is possible (I swear every time I go to Planned Parenthood to renew my prescription they tell me I can skip periods by leaving it in the extra week, and no actually I can't and I won't stop bleeding either). I had a similar issue with the implant which I tried first, so if you are someone who still gets periods on birth control like me, the ring having the option to take a week off makes it pretty ideal. I don't always sync exactly to the week off, so I sometimes start bleeding a couple days before or after. That does not seem to affect anything one way or the other.
    I use a Diva cup for the bleeding, and I can basically just empty it once a day and otherwise not fuss. removing the cup without also removing the ring when the period is on the early side takes a bit of messing around in there from time to time, but it works pretty well. I can't usually use tampons for very long because they are uncomfortable to me, but I don't feel the cup 75% of the time (initial insertion is sometimes a bit irritating, but then it settles and I don't have any issues taking it out or putting it back in for the rest of the period). So if anyone was looking for reusable period products, that's my recommendation.

    A very informative video that i really appreciate. To be fair i feel like the contraceptive methods all kind of suck.
    I cannot stand the idea of anything being inside of me. This is part of why pregnancy is one of my worst nightmares, outside of really not wanting children. So a lot of contraceptive methods instantly dont work for me, like the nuvaring. I cant do tampons either. The idea just makes me extremely itchy and panicky and disgusts me and just no please no.
    I never tried the patch but i reacted allergic to different glues in patches i had gotten in the hospital over the years, and i am paranoid AF about it too. I like the pill because i feel in control. Every day at the exactly the same hour i take it, and i feel like i have "actively" protected myself. I like that control, that safety, that "control mechanism" where i can check if i took the pill if im paranoid.
    I also like that theoretically i could stop taking the pill any day and throughout a few days be rid of the hormones vs an under-skin implant. Also i KNOW that i taken the hormones, unlike the paranoia inside my mind that for some reason a patch or an implant wouldnt properly give off the hormones.
    It works for me because i havent had any negative side effects, and i love routine. I started taking it with 18 and i never stopped or have had issues. As a teen i had periods that felt like they are going to kill me. Like i was unable to function every single month, i was in excruciating pain and pale as a ghost and just... Nah. The pill really helped with that, and now i basically dont have bleeds anymore (part of my ED and part of hormones but i dont hate it), enough to confirm im not pregnant but not soo much to make me want to die.
    I never taken antibiotics, i wasnt sick, im avoiding the foods that could interfere with the uptake of the hormones,etc. So for me it works, but i realize its not fit for everyone. Still i dont love the idea that im taking hormones my whole life, surely interfering with my body and my metabolism. There is plenty of people now against the hormonal birthcontrol and that is fine, i just want to say its not all bad either.
    I dont love that i have to be taking hormones for my whole life to avoid pregnancy, i know that its not ideal but the alternatives arent great though. I dont love the idea of tube fusion, and somehow im paranoid it would fail or i would get an ectopic pregnancy. Again we re talking about interfering with the insides of my body, and im not a fan of that at all. The more on-hand medical knowledge i have, the stronger that admiration of chirurgical procedures but also the dislike of it accuring to me. Also im "too young" if you ask about anyone, because im "just" 30 and im surely gonna change my mind about wanting children *eyeroll*.

    i’ve been on the pill most of my post-pubescent life, starting for help with truly horrific periods, which it did! i decided to switch to the implant (arm not iud) so i didn’t have to take a pill every day, even tho it was a pretty easy habit at that point, and it’s good for at least three years which sounds great.
    unfortunately it was a shit show. i had “abnormal bleeding,” which basically meant… almost never not bleeding. it wasn’t not just regular bc period bleeding, it was heavy. very. awful. i also had really intense breast pain like nothing i’ve ever experienced in my life. i stuck it out for about nine months praying it’d regulate but it didn’t and i couldn’t hang. i got it out and went back on the pill.
    i’m now just VERY good about taking my pill “perfectly” which means always at the exact same time, and that gives you the efficacy at the high end of the range. (i think weight is a factor in efficacy too but not for me personally.) keeping it in the same place that’s always with me if i leave the house is key. i get three months prescribed and skip periods with it too which is safe and with doctor approval and awesome.
