I've had alright luck but I mostly play crusade so objectives are different. Main issue is how few weapons innately have heavy.
I charge forward with 10 assault intercessors with a captain and lieutenant. If you're stuck in melee those pistols hit on 2's. If they get shot at, they're not shooting my damage dealers, and 40 something attacks with lethal hits is rad.
I run 2 squads of scouts - cheapest squad with 2 heavy weapons.
I run both kinds of eliminatiors - cheap heavies.

Then kind of fill in the rest. Redemptors are generally good, I run autocannon predators because they get a lot of decent shots. HB devastators because Lots of shots at +1 to wound.
Finally I run a hammer strike as a missile and use that reroll wounds strat to make the S9 attacks wound more reliably.
The detachment needed a 1CP strat which allowed a single Infantry unit to count as stationary even if it moved or advanced.

I really like this detachment for fun games. Might be because I like just getting 10 Heavy Interessors on a objective and say "come get me" as they shoot.
I live the theme. But that 2cp strat shoot back... not really useful. Definitely missing a strat for "count as remained stationary "

Kinda of glad the desolation squad and whirlwind isn't heavy
