  • I ride in a 1961 Daimler Ferret across Houston streets. It is surprisingly smooth and we got lots of waves. #armoredvehicle #tank #militaryvehicles

Drove the MK 2 Ferret from early 1974 to 1975 aged 17, with 2nd Troop C Sqn, 4/7 RDG. UK, Cyprus (during the invasion), then NI. Mothballed our Chieftains and played at being the UK Independent Armoured Recce Sqn for 12 months.
Was Chieftain turret crew, gunner / loader radio operator, but had to train up to drive the Ferrets. We collected our Ferrets refurbished from the store at Luggershall.
    Just a few points:
    1. It is designated as a Scout Car. Tanks have tracks.
    2. Ammo is always carried inside. You don’t want to have to get out if you need the spare ammo.
    3. To release the escape hatches, remove the two safety pins, and pull down on the handle. The hatch falls away. The handle is located on the top edge of the hatch. It is only useable from the inside, and it takes about 3 people to refit the hatch, left side has the spare wheel and the right has a big storage bin. You only use them to evacuate from inside of a stricken vehicle when under fire or if upside-down in a ditch.
    4. We had the .303 Browning.
    5. The armour will stop rifle fire only.
    7. Those launchers are only for smoke grenades.
    8. Mirrors are always fitted but folded down in action to prevent reflections.
    9. The driver always got in and out through the front hatch so he didn’t clash with the Commander when both are loading up to bug out in a hurry.
    10. The black cover on the right unscrews and it is where the slave lead fits. This is used to give or receive a jump start from another vehicle. It was fitted to most vehicles at the time with a 24 volt system and every vehicle carried the jump cable which was about 12 feet long.
    11. Where the K & N air filter is fitted , would have been the large oil bath air cleaner.
the GCP 15 times in all gears, first with the transfer box in Forward, then the same in Reverse. The Ferret is really as fast in reverse as forward, if you are brave enough.
Lovely sound, Fond memories of the little Ferret.

It is NOT a clutch pedal, use it as such and you will burn up the gearbox. It's a gear change pedal.
The Ferret has a fluid flywheel, you select the gear you want and then just cycle the change pedal, it simply changes bands in the Wilson preselect epicyclic gearbox.

@@scottsgaragehtx439 I can tell you a lot about the engine too.
However, as another word of serious warning, do NOT under any circumstances put EP or Hypoid gear oil in the gearbox, it will stop working as the epicyclic brake bands will slip. Plain SAE 30 engine oil only, no multigrades, the gear trains will mince that to it's base composition.
The fluid flywheel is specified for British army OM13 - this is a light hydraulic oil with stearic acid added (not important domestically), OM 13 is an ISO 13 hydraulic oil (or 13 cSt), how that compares to ATF I have no idea.

A bit late t o the party ,but yep it is a gear change pedal .and for some reason i have always remembered when you get a false neutral it is a 50lb rated spring that would technically engage your knee with your chin lol..I was suprised it was not mentioned how the steering did not self centre as per the ackerman principle ,so you had to start to straighten up before you where round the corner....I think all military vehicles are a blast to drive .Used to take them on a roadtest down the A12 in colly back in the mid 80s

Had two, one served on the Rock Gibraltar, the other Northern Ireland. The commander was the gunner. It was essential to test the escape hatches after a serious incident in Germany i believe, when a Ferret turned turtle and caught fire and the guys inside struggled to open the side hatch doors as the door release and hatches were stuck and gummed up with paint and crap. When you drive you need a passenger in the turret to look out and guide you when reversing. They also need to have the gear change pedal pumped 10 times at least and the vehicle brought up to working temp before moving off, i was told this by REME.

Smashing piece of kit, drove it whilst serving in HM Forces in the late 70s early 80's. Assuming you know to prime the gear box by pumping the GCP in each gear, as part of first parade (a bit like a pilots walk around), just one additional top tip. Always keep the engine bay clear of fuel spillage and oil. Failing that, ensure all fire extinguishers are charged due to a tendency to spontaneous combustion 😂😂😂. Also it is a bugger to drive in the winter or rain! Finally, the sound of that engine is music to my ears. Enjoy my friend!!!!

The escape hatches worked just fine on the ferret's I drove/commanded. They are easier to drop off than they are to put back on.

  • @davehopkin9502

The seat in the turret is for the commander not the gunner, the commander also operated the turret MG
The grenade launchers are smoke dischargers and only ever use for smoke
The wing mirrors were fitted as standard for road use
Its not a clutch its a gear change pedal, pressing it tells the gearbox to go to the currently selected gear

That round plastic cover above the gear stick is the battery slave socket. If you've a flat battery, unscrew the cap and push the slave lead on. The other end of the slave lead will be attached to
another vehicles slave socket with. Start it up. Hey presto we are away. Basically jump leads 😁

That is NOT a clutch. It's called a GCP (Gear change peddle) you pre select the gears on the level and physically change gears with your foot.

  • @Willyslikey
    @Willyslikey Před rokem +1

It’s not a “clutch”. It’s a preselect gearbox. The thing ur not sure of is the horn button. Thanks for trying but you’re missing a bunch dude.

Hello. So I’ve been told. To us inexperienced civilians it looks like a tank, but tanks have tracks. You can see that another knowledgeable person informed me of the same thing some time ago in the comments. It was one of the coolest things I been able to do in any vehicle though. Thanks for watching and commenting.
