I love how they put this banger before announcing how the currency loses more and more everyday, how 7 children died in a tragic accident and how the global warming is killing more species everywhere
It's like a trance, a cult of sorts. It starts playing and people just get enticed to listen. It builds up, and attention is now 100%. Bad news gets injected into our minds, and they're done and you're left with a sort of dancey but depressing vibe.
This theme has never dated and never will. This is on the air all the time across the globe. I wouldn't mind having the composer's PRS writer cheques!! Brilliant theme and production.

It was my alarm when i was 6. My mom would turn on the telly and id know 20 min and she would be waking me up for school. But still looking for the original 90s one. I just remember the beeping and the headlines. Then it was pillow over the head.

Well they have updated it multiple times, same basic premise but the newer versions have a lot more orchestral elements plus not to mention the separate BBC World version with their signature soundmark.
I remember when this dropped in my childhood in '06. That thing was a bop.

the beeps are supposed to sync with the countdown timer which is another thing i like about the BBC Countdowns

@rjclive It was with this theme that the 2006 synth bassline that it was used for BBC News themes during the year 2007 until 2008 was introduced.

I used to have insomnia and so my half-sleep was accompanied by BBC News 24 (as it was called then).
I used to like seeing how long of the tune there was to go. I think 90 seconds was the longest time I remembered before cueing in the next news.
I bet everyone else in the same situation knew when the 10-seconds to go point was even with their eyes shut.*
*It was when the beeps suddenly went high pitched although I suppose it represented 11 seconds to go in real life.

Not quite how I remember it
This is the hourly countdown for the 24-hour news channel. The Six O'Clock News and the Nine O'Clock News etc had their own themes although I think all BBC bulletins go along with this generic tune now.
