Essentially, in 4/4, the hands play 16th notes, the feet play triplets (12 beats per bar). In 12/8 (as in this song), the hands 16th notes (12 snare hits per bar) whilst hte feet play a straight 4/4 pattern using the same metronome - so you get 24 hits on the hands and 16 hits on the feet. So for 12.8, play 16th notes on hte feet and hit the snare as the metronome. Double the snare speed you have a bomb blast. TRIPLE the speed and you have Krisiun.

You can hear he is playing clean in time 16th notes on the kicks while playing 8th note triples on the snare. Set the metronome to about 200 bpm to check for yourself I think it sounds great, very unique, and the timing is solid. If you want to say 32nd notes on kicks and 16th note triplets on snare, then just set the metronome to about 100bpm (doesn't really make a difference, I always pick the higher tempo and the lower subdivisions for death metal) very brutal, cheers!

You're probably just hearing what's coming through his monitors - it's supposed to be like that so he can hear what he's doing on the kicks. It's not supposed to sound good, but CLEAR coming through the monitors.
It's a thing of preference I think. I myself like having the snare high enough so that I could do rimshots while playing double bass. For me this is a million times better than having the snare below my knees or even angled.
