I also already knew about the universal translator and really like the concept. Read about it on the wiki and was like "YEAH makes sense!"
When I write my TFP fanfics, I always write Bumblebee's dialogue in bold to show that he speaks differently than the others. Also because I like to try guess what he's really saying (when I'm not making up dialogue myself, that is).
If Bumblebee's bleeps are a sort of morse code language, it could explain that Raf might know the whistle language/morse code fluently...
...except what Bumblebee bleeps is probably still Cybertronian and would thus be a DIFFERENT morse code than the Earth one.
So yeah. Still no clue on how Raf can understand Bumblebee.
In the books the characters have difficultys understanding Bumblebee after he lost his voice. They have to "interpret" what he's saying and some are better at that, some are worse. Optimus had a hard time learning how to understand him
maybe his universal translator has seen better days??
@@dimdive7997 Yeah, but in Prime they seem to understand him pretty well. The bold text I mentioned is, as I said, to show that he doesn't speak normally.
From what I remember of the show, the Decepticons don't seem to have a problem understanding Bumblebee (at least, those who actually interact with him and are seen hearing him bleep).
At least Megatron understood Bumblebee when he was inside his head. Even when his body isn't real, apparently Bumblebee still can't speak normally. :/ (though he can in Cyberverse, but there it's his own mind so that might explain it).
I don't remember any Decepticons responding to Bee's bleeps in a way that shows they don't understand him. I think Knock Out might understand him, don't really remember if they had actual conversations though.
I'm not sure if Starscream and Bee spoke with each other in Operation Bumblebee, but Star didn't seem to show any lack of understanding of him either.
Anyway, my point here is, if that beeping language Bumblebee's speaking is something the Cybertronians have to learn and isn't just automatically translated through their universal translators, then why would the Decepticons take the effort of learning to understand Bee?
I can understand with interrogation, but still, it's easier with a cortical psychic patch, so...
Eh, it's hard for me to understand this.
Then again, fanfics are fanfics and not canon, so whatever works I guess, as long as it doesn't stray all away from known facts.
I only have the first book, have never read Exiles, Retribution or the Covenant, so my background knowledge of Prime's past is limited, though I often read on the wiki, so that gives me some knowledge I guess.
Before the book analysis video, I didn't know whether the books or the video games were more canon in context to Prime, I assumed either of them could work and so I decided to just make my own Prime past by combining the plot of the book and the games, as well as adding a few elements from IDW. At least, for one of my fics.
And despite the errors I can now see in that fic, having watched these analysis videos, I don't feel like changing what I've already established in that AU. At the very least I have more information to go on for my next fics, to make them more true to the lore and stuff.
In the end, though, they are fanfics and AUs, so it really doesn't matter how much they fit into the lore or if the concepts fit completely with what we've learned from these analysis videos. I just write what I think is good and fun and just have fun with it.
@@dimdive7997 You are right about that, but a lot of the time his beep box (lol) cut out as well. He couldn't "speak" and sometimes it was just static, so I think that is where the communication problems were

One thing that bugs me a lot is how do cybertronian weapons work? Like the ones that come out of their arms? Do they ever run out of ammo? Does the ammo affect them? Were does the ammo come from? Would really love an explanation for this! Anyways awesome video! This channel is so underated!
Edit: Also another thing concerning the weapons topic is...how do they get stored? Just look at Optimus. He has this big cannons and long, shiny blades stored on his Hands/arms.
Edit: thanks for the answers! Really answered so many questions!
That's why I preffer the conventional weapons. I mean, they were just civilians before the war, right?
I like to think that ballistic type weapons (such as weapons that shot bullets or missal's) require ammo and to be reloaded. While energy based weapons (pretty much any laser) run off the energy of the bot
they explained it in the series about the ammo part, their ammo is energon their life blood if you want the episode about them talking about it its when starscream teamed up with MECH he pretty much gave a brief explanation about it.
@@whyhe11othere well that explains some things. But how do they work? Also were cybertronians born with the weapons? If they use too much ammo do they die? How is the energon(blood or energy) get converted into plasma? Also how do they store? Optimus having a sword and a weapon in one arm is just crazy. Just look at that big blade and the size of that weapon. Anyways thanks!
@@unhlylettuceyt8722 I believed their manually equipped. Warrior Class and Worker Class vehicons must have them installed, and most likely so did gladiators and any other military personal for self defense and war. They must run on energon, because that's most likely where it's energy is from, while hand held weapons must run on a battery like in star wars. I dont know how it's turned in plasma energy, probably just alien tech since energon is explosive and probably through some type of converted heat is turned into lasers. And having equipped swords and a gun in one arm is possible, since their not in the same slot, Optimus' blade is above his hand, while his gun is literally his upper arm. And no i dont believe they were born with weapons, when the war for cybertron began like every cybertronian that wasnt a pacifist probably has weapon systems installed for war or self defense.
In the bayverse, the autobots knew English and other languages through the worldwide web and since their advanced autonomous beings they adapted quickly. The decepticons also know English and other languages but they only speak cybertronian because they detest Earth and it’s inhabitants. Megatron also was online when he was being studied just frozen but he probably heard everything and overtime learned at least English but still detested humans and spoke in cybertronian mixed with English.
So I always assumed the Aligned autobots and decepticons studied and downloaded the worldwide web while they were on Earth so could easily communicate with the inhabitants.
But your answer makes sense, because if other alien races dont have something like the worldwide web like the humans then cybertronians probably used universal translators to better communicate with them.
how come he didn't get his G1 fusion cannon in the 2007 movie?
Not to mention, there are definitely scenes were both Megatron and Starscream are speaking to humans. Remember when Megatron spoke to agent Fowler? Or when Starscream made a brief alliance with mech?
I got a serious question: What do language students after school, sleep under foreign bridges?
Translation is what I am looking at. Possibly embassy work
Oh boy haha my dad told me something like that when I was younger haha well it was either that or computer science, thank God cause I love computer science but I'm learning a third language currently so I hope I could take back that dream in the future
Cybertron and earth are linked they even said also english is Cybertronion language but the letters are different
Um... language is a pretty useful degree, more useful than some others for sure. You can become a translator, work for an international company, and just generally speaking- having a language degree to which you can add to your resume can make you more hirable. College can increase your earnings in virtually any field.
@@iamagoodperson9064 Um no, that was never said in Aligned
They had a concept like this in Green Lantern the Animated Series. They mentioned the universal translator in the ring during an episode when Kilowag said a certain word in English(let’s say orange) rhymed with word in his language. Letting the audience know that even if we heard English, it’s usually from Hal’s perspective. But it was cool how the show brought it up to explain why even Razor could speak the language and understand everyone...even if his ring was red during the whole series
This was an excellent video ^^
One thing to consider as well is that, well the names of Cybertronians probably aren’t even their real names? As in their names would be in Cybertronian, but the translator would simply find words that best suit the Cybertronian name, and convert them into English. This might explain the double word names (probably not the right term) such as Skyquake, Starscream, Bulkhead, and Cliffjumper. And for characters like Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime, both Ultra, and Prime might be titles?
Yes, their names would have a different ring in their own languages, but I am sure that Starscream for example would just be their words for "star" and "scream". Some of their names could be including titles too!
Besides, their real names might not be physically pronounceable by humans, so hence why the translations are necessary
That begs the question whether the Cybertronian translation of Knock Out's name is
"To render unconscious" or "Super hot person".
@@affsteak3530 I like to believe his name in their language also includes the two concepts... Who knows, Beauty Strike? XD Something because puns don't translate
What about Bumblebee? Would his "real" name be derived from a bee-like animal native to Cybertron?
Ultra magnus: whats a kilt?
Optimus: [is literally to embarrased to tell ultra magnus he dont know either and just akwardly stares]
It makes a lot of sense, especially as it's well known there are multiple cybertronian colonies besides cybertron so it would be a natural invention
It's an interesting theory, but remember they are still machines. Living machines, but machines nonetheless. Remember Mech learned enough about Cybertronians to build one themselves in the form of Nemesis Prime. And while NP had no spark it was remote controlled like a corpse on a voodoo spell.
I would be willing to bet that ANY Cybertronian could have the info on their drives read directly, I would imagine such a procedure would involve having to kill the Cybertronian and physically remove their drive and reading it in to a reader. Case in point when Bulkhead was infected with the Synthen formula Knockout was going to amputate Bulkhead's head presumably to salvage the info. So while you might not be able to force info out of a living Cybertronian mind, you can rip out it's brain and directly read the data from it if you don't care about keeping them alive.
So I think Ratchet's comment about Soundwave was more about Soundwave's will power and Ratchet's doubt he would break. Additionally while a Cybertronian might not be able to directly download knowledge, I bet any can willingly delete information off of their own drive and force themselves to BSoD like Soundwave, but judging by The Autobot's reaction such a tactic might be insanely risky and could be considered similar to bashing your head into a wall to knock yourself out or if you could delibrately give yourself a stroke on demand.
Mech created something like a Cybertronian, but not with all the complete parts and everything. And besides, if drives could be read, why ever keep Arcee, Cliffjumper, Wheeljack, and Smokescreen alive when they were captured and interrogated? If they could simply kill them and get the information, they would have.
@@emperorkumquat I kind of saw the cortical psychic patch as like a USB drive or if you were going to plug in your camera onto your computer, to look at its memory chip full of photos and videos.
First I thought "that's overcomplicating things" but actually it's better them downloading languages, wish that idea could be explored, of course it's kinda hard to do on a show or movie but it's an amazing idea for Transformers lore, also please give us a universal Cybertronian language hasbro, I wanna beep with the boys

This is genius deduction!
And the Bumblebee explanation is very interesting, if he was unable to speak with a regular voice like its a disability and had to resort to a sort of basic cybertronian code, then its possible that's how Raph can still understand him like the other autobots, cause he has an affinity for computers and even cybertronian ones in some cases.
So its not a total mystery unlike with Sari's origins
I love how Kumquat can both explain how things work in the Transformers but can also make it funny

I believe they use a translator at first but learn it traditionally after being to earth once or twice. Plus I think Unicron is a special case because he is a god and litterally the earth in Transformers Prime.
I absolutely love etymology and linguistics so naturally xenolanguages and alien communication is very fun to hypothesise about! The universal translator method is actually confirmed canon in other continuities (such as spotlight: Cliffjumper in IDW which takes lots of influence from Aligned). I also think that Cybertronian names must also be translated, and it must be one of those languages that is very easy to make puns with, on account of all the names that are also puns somehow!
Honestly I would love if someone took a serious crack at a Cybertronian language and made a short or episode of some kind with that as what they primarily speak with subtitles.
It's like in Spotlight: Cliffjumper where he boils it down to just another way they can naturally adapt to their surroundings. It's no different than taking on another mode
can we just appreciate the effort and thoughts put in in the making of this video
Yes.
Yes!
Your point of Predaking never meeting the humans actually blew my mind! I had never realized that! Too bad he never did, it could’ve been interesting!
As a translating studies student, this topic is perfect! It would be an absolute nightmare for us to make a reliable translator like what you theorize Cybertronians have, but for them? Probably easy. The only real problem is that our computers are incapable of understanding meanings (semantics), so we have to use deep learning. This results in very imperfect translations, so much so that even DeepL makes a lot of mistakes, even though it knows how to write something that is pleasant to read. For Cybertronians, though, making a computer that can understand meanings should not be impossible, give their insanely developed technology, and so the computer learns the language using the internet, and then translates for them. It even explains how the translator can't translate things Cybertronians have no knowledge of, like pizza or kilts. It knows the meaning, but cannot relay it in Cybertronian because it lacks the vocabulary. This is something even us human translators often struggle with. For me, it's often a problem to explain some Czech things to an English-speaking person because they have never heard of that thing, especially customs and traditions and stuff like that.
I've always dreamt of a text-to-speech engine with the voice of Peter Cullen.
Now I know that Optimus Prime has it. 😁
Now this was the kind of approaching I was looking for this issue, I kinda feel like a dummy for not even imagine that possibility, I guess the internet thing took too much space jaja but anyways it doesn't sound so inaccurate as well, after all they're bionic beings so maybe the chances of learning from internet like an AI would do could be a chance as well

so, as I’ve been re-watching the series, I have a whole new perspective on it overall. Now that I’m older, it would be really sad to see Optimus prime die in that scene, but also, I think it would’ve been really great in terms of character development, to watch smokescreen grow as a bot, and mature as well as gain acceptance from the rest of the team as the new leader and as a prime.
This is kind of what I was thinking, and it’s super cool that this is a viable theory!! I also always assumed that Bumblebee was beeping in a type of Cybertronian Morse code, which would explain why the others could understand him. Originally in Exodus, they just guess what Bee is saying, and though they could learn what his individual language meant, it wouldn’t explain why Megatron and the other Cons can understand him, unless someone came up with the idea of him using a code that all Cybertronians learned in case of emergency or during the war. Otherwise every new Autobot recruit would have to learn Bee’s individual way of speaking. And Megs or Screamer wouldn’t take the time to learn the individual language of one Autobot scout
Bumblebee was having trouble beeping/speaking in Exodus since his box thing kept going to static. I think the idea was that he used a code from the start, but getting it to work was hard. He was able to say some lines in Exodus before cutting out

Great video I always learn so much from these. I've actually considered trying to learn a second language but could never make up my mind which one.
French?
@@emperorkumquat That's one of the ones I've been considering because it's the one I think sounds the prettiest.
@@Knock0ut-Starscream It doesn't sound pretty hahahah oh no that is just a romantic stereotype! It has no trilled r so it is much rougher than languages like Italian or Swedish. Not that this is a bad thing, but smooth languages are what people generally call pretty
@@emperorkumquat I just always liked how that one sounded. The other ones I've considered are Spanish, German (Because I was told they were the two easiest for an English speaking person to learn.) And Japanese because I like Anime. Main problem with Spanish is the double R sound I've always had trouble pronouncing the R sound even in English it's strange because I only have trouble when it's in the middle of a word because I can say it perfectly when a word starts with R but when it's in the middle of a word I tend to skip over it. I didn't even know I did that until someone pointed it out. XD
@@Knock0ut-Starscream Actually for English speakers I would say Swedish is the easiest to learn. It is also Germanic, so same language family. You don't need to worry about cases like in German, or hard verb conjugations like in Spanish. Japanese on the other hand is very difficult and requires dedication
I love your videos so much. I appreciate someone like you who has such a passion for this series of Transformers.
This is a common plot hole in literally EVERY SCI-FI franchise.
In Star Wars, Organic beings can understand the fluent beeps & boops of Astromechs.
Notice that it's only SOME humans that understand those beings. Honestly, there are people out there who understand and fluently speak Binary. I'd always assumed that the characters that could understand a 'robotic' language (like Raf/Bumblebee and Anikin/R2D2) at the very least understood and used Binary on a semi-regular basis. There's a bit of a pattern that emerges if you look. Those who understand the mechanical characters are either computer minded, or advanced mechanics. Raf could probably pull apart a computer and put it back together with upgrades no sweat and code his own operating system to boot. And Anikin built his own pod racer at about the same age. Can you imagine the wiring and heavy coding that had to go into that thing to make it run? Both deal with computers in various forms in intricate detail on a regular basis.
*shrugs* Just my take on it. :)
10:14 did he just say uwu??
lmao
Megatron can't force Autobots to become Deceptions.
Sigma from MMX: *Laughs in Sigma Virus.*
Oh hey, I wasn't the only one thinking of this. Thing is, Sigma could probably turn a Transformer Maverick, considering they have Sparks, which are the equivalent of souls, and Reploids have DNA Souls, so they are kind of similar. I'm not saying it would happen, only that it could.
@@katiemckinney9456 Makes sense.
@@captainrick4513 Also Optimus has Zero outdone on the number of times he's heroically sacrificed himself. That's pretty impressive.
These videos are really cool, thank you for taking the time to make them.
Great analysis, as always!
Cybertronian languages have been shown be to at least moderately similar to conventional English in previous series (For reference, the IDW Comics, specifically Mirage's bar has English writing labelling the name of the bar), so it's not out of the question that Cybertronian languages are the same when spoken as English, with similar written languages as well. So, obviously some culturally specific words like dragon or college won't be in Cybertronian languages, and cultrually specific Cybertronian words likely wouldn't exist in English or at least have an English counterpart that's an entirely different word with the same meaning.
Yay I'm the first comment I love your vids
3rd comment actually but whatever
*They adapt*
Predacons adapted,
Bumblebee's beep and boop could be translated to 0s and 1s, which Cybertronians could understand
I never knew I needed this video, thank you for this, now the show makes more sense to me
Megatron speaking mandarin dare I say it sounds more intimidated then Frank Welker's megatron
Knockout probably has wayyyy to much fun irritating everyone on the Nemesis to stop speaking Earth
Another informative and enjoyable video as usual.
I've ALWAYS wondered how visiting species automatically spoke the same language as everyone around them. This was a therapeutic video. lol
You should make a transformers discord!!
We don’t speak English. We speak Cybertronian. It’s just the English dub of the show.
Oh! Do you think through VPN, we can connect to server Tony and servers, and then watch the original, in the original Cybertron in voiceover with English subtitles just like anime?
@@qantaloupemelon2791 if you degenerate flesh creatures were not so primitive, MAYBE you could understand our language!
This is my favorite TF series and you just made me love it even more so. Thank you
Knockout also calls starscream Herr Kommandant, which is German for mr commander, and starscream understands it just fine. It makes the translator theory make sense.
8:35 Knockout: Come to daddy!
Bulkhead: Say hello to mommy!
Breakdown: Say uncle!
Also Knockout is probably the most sexiest transformers out there lol
10:25 😏😏😏😏😏
Unicron was earth so he hears the mythology and used has avatar to study, also you need to collab with the other transformers youtubers.
This has been on my mind for weeks as of late I love this
I really enjoyed watching this! You did a great job!!
