I totaly agree with you, plus it's coming from an ex civilian refugee in one of the wars of the '90s... Wars used to be simple and about land expantion and affirming power, wether you're just establishing it or preserving it, but nowdays it's more complicated than that and about resources, geopolitics and immense economical and financial interests. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against capitalism or democracy, but they do have their flaws, just as any human system... and our economies are growth dependant, but continuous growth turned out to be actually not that sustainable... so I have impression when I look at the history around just the last 2 WW that wars are used like some sort of an economical reset button aswell...

I can’t believe that economics has anything to do with this. This is a Megalomaniacal (Putin) ex-Soviet era KGB agent that wants to put the old team (the USSR) back together, with him as it’s supreme leader to run it like the Soviet era thugs did. With brutality and Gulags to take care of those that resist and they’re families. Like the state run empire’s in North Korea and China. Those that are in charge, get the best and finest of everything while the rest are virtually slaves.
It’s hard to believe that even though every single person in the world living under those conditions, wants to come here to the USA to get away from such as that, there are a bunch of people trying to get into leadership here in the States to bring us into a Soviet style form of government. With confiscation of firearms. Why do you think that they have been chipping away at the 2nd amendment for so long. The 1st amendment is basically been taken away from us. The 2nd is next.

Do you know what the Minsk agreement was? Did you know there are actual Nazzis in Ukraine who have been ethnically cleansing Russian-Ukrainians? Russia was forced to stop the killings by going in, because Ukraine refused to fulfill the agreement. More than 14,000, mostly civilians, have been killed since 2008 in the fighting within Ukraine.
Most of the fighting in Ukraine, is being done not by Russians, but by the Russian-Ukrainian separatist forces.

Conquest going forward, is most effectively done using strategic economics.
Effectively locking down technology & manufacturing to depriving your foes.
Manipulating their social media, hearts & minds of the foe. Replacing their decision makers with ones who will decide in your favor.

    • @johnharrison4394
      @johnharrison4394 Před rokem +54

There are a number of other reasons for war, namely a fight for resources (overpopulation), political unrest (spurred on by corruption, lawlessness, too much state control, etc.), revenge (Iraq war), testing of weapons (and using up old stock), cultural rivalries (gang warfare on a larger scale), etc.
Even if we manage to stop fighting wars as we currently understand them, I think there will always be a battle between freedom and control, democracy and dictatorship, wanting more and being satisfied with less.
With the relentless onset of technology, we can already see how powerless the ordinary person is becoming when up against organised attack.
Drones, laser guided weaponry, satellites, metadata, all manner of surveillance, etc.
All this combined with the ominous threats of climate change, human over-population, the degradation of Nature in general but especially the loss of arable land and livable landscape, well it's anyone's guess what the future might hold.
Suffice to say that overall, I do not like our chances.
When there's nothing to eat and no job to go to, and no room to move, well if it's not war then it may as well be. That's why prevention is much better than cure, but none of the underlying factors seem to be getting addressed as much as they need to be. Every eleven years we add another billion people for example. That's a lot of pressure feeding into a finite system.
Of course wars do exacerbate the situation. Just as so many people die, so could the entire planet.
We all in some way play a part in that.

One of the most profound statements occurs near the end. The speaker contrasts the price of weaponry and systems to defend a country with the cost to rebuild. Given the widespread destruct of Ukraine, the answer is crystal clear: investing in defense is far cheaper than rebuilding. Maybe our politicians can reflect on that.

A key thing i notice is firstly that it is more sharply defining the difference between defensive warfare and offensive. The offensive side has to do more of the movement, it has to be target rich, it has to reveal itself to make attacks, it needs more logistics. The drone revolution and handheld launchers mean a citizen rich defensive environment can be a strength intelligence wise but the people holding the land become equals of the tank in weaponry and have the eyes of an air force. Secondly visibility and movement is now far more lethal. Supply requires movement, concentrated stockpiles and invisibility. The importance of camouflage and GPS is huger than ever. A defensive side can with preparation hide and disperse supplies far more easily. Roaming AI drones that auto map and recognise vehicles are probably already emerging and systems that locate enemy by sound of their weaponry for instant disposal en-masse are probably also to be expected. Even weapon/ration supplies might soon be managed by drone transporters keeping low to the ground

I think that people are looking at the day to day effects of the Ukraine war and not looking at the long term aspects. Even if this war ended tomorrow, it will take Ukraine decades to rebuild all that has been destroyed. All them destroyed or half destroyed buildings are going to need to be torn down, removing the rubble and constructing new buildings to replace the destroyed buildings. I believe the cost involved to rebuild should be the responsibility of Russia. After the war a tax on all imported and exported Russian goods be imposed to fund the rebuilding of Ukraine.

I was in the USAF during the Vietnam era and there was talk even back then of a move to unmanned fighter aircraft, not a popular subject with USAF pilots. The concern back then was the possibility that an unmanned aircraft could be co-opted by the enemy, since control was from a remote location. One of the reasons this move was considered was that it is expensive to train a pilot, so when the plane is downed, sometimes a pilot is lost as well. If a less expensive unmanned aircraft is lost, the "pilot" sitting at a computer screen safely away from the fighting is not hurt. Manned aircraft also require protections for the pilot, and there are fewer limits on the aerial maneuvers that can be done with an unmanned aircraft that doesn't have to worry about the pilot blacking out like with a manned aircraft.
I think the jury is still out on tanks. The Russians do not use an infantry screen around the tanks like NATO does, so from the videos I have seen, Ukrainians are firing at Russian tanks from point-blank range many times. But if we are or get to the point where a $25,000 dollar missile can reliably destroy a $25 million dollar tank from long distance, then it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend limited defense budgets on tanks, unless they can be better protected.
Finally, the missiles Ukraine has used to destroy ships in the Russian navy raise questions about the future of surface ships as well.

Another step in the Drone tech, would be the extraction of the wounded and resupply of a besieged Troop, the lift capacity may be in Kilograms rather than Tons, this may have a pay off in the Civilian field, as well as in Disaster relief.

The Iranians were successful at hacking one of our drones and capturing it. So there is that problem. As far as big ships, they are somewhat safe in the center of the ocean or maybe in a well defended port. Get them close to a coastline (like 500 to 1000 miles) they could be hit by land to sea missiles and stealthy diesel electric subs which we do not seem to detect. Our aircraft carriers are good for third world country interventions. If we go up against china we will have a real problem. I don't think so. Russians tanks used in Ukraine were built with different doctrine in mind. They are relatively easier to destroy than western tanks, that have focused on crew survival for decades, while russians focused on numbers, mobility and ease to operate the tank.
Also, Russians are failing in combined arms combat, if you have a drone above you with thermal imaging camera, you will see potential ambush before it becomes a threat, then you call in attack helicopter that should be around. In the first stages of the war, Russians were failing to protect their armored columns and we saw the results.

With the evidence now clear that the once militarily powerful nations such as Russia can no longer rely on overwhelming armour or aircraft. It seems that hardware such as drones, attack UAVs, light anti aircraft and anti armour weapons (a good example of this is that in one recent contact, a single Ukrainian soldier, using manpak AT missiles, took out 6 tanks) precise heavy artillery and good intel, can sustain much smaller forces.

The Russians have forgotten these lessons, and their armor and crews are paying the price. But drones are certainly changing the face of modern warfare to be sure.

One of the reasons the Russian tanks have fared so poorly is probably that Russian tanks use autoloaders so a lot of the ammunition is not stored safely so if an anti-tank weapon penetrates the tank turret, the ammunition in the turret will usually cook off and blow the turret off the tank killing the crew and destroying the vehicle.
The Russian armed forces have also proven to be not so flexible which is probably because the Russian armed forces are extremely top controlled which means the mid level officer core don't seem to be free to make on the site decision as is done in western armed forces. It also appears the Russian armed forces lack an effective NCO core.

What NATO would do is concentrate on eliminating threats to medium and high altitude aircraft, which are typically larger, less-numerous, more-expensive SAMs and fighters. Once that's done strikes would be made to isolate and degrade ground units followed by strong attacks at weak spots to envelop enemy forces. Any enemy that attempted to maneuver and mass to engage the attackers would be destroyed by air and long-range precision fires.
