There's a lot to think about when building a small layout, especially in a tight space, and we'll cover everything you need to know. This is the first episode in a new series about building a small HO scale layout that I'm calling "The Grunge".
This episode talks about finding a concept for your layout and how to find a plan that will fit in your space.

You're providing a very good service for the hobby. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge and experience.
If the family isn’t on board, the Golden rule is to get a new family 🤣
😆
Lots of great info, should be very helpful for old and new modelers. Thanks for sharing. Dave
I hope so!
I too hate the statement, "I have no place for a layout". I bet I could find 2 places in any home or apartment!
Thanks dude!
No problem! Glad you liked it!
@@ThePixelDepotLLC I ,add my own island of sodor layout with this information
Yes I agree, I build micro layouts. Hello from NZ
Glad you found the video! 🙂
I am building a T gauge that goes on top of my IKEA dresser.
Sounds fun! Keep me posted!
Really enjoyed your thought process. 😀
Thanks, Mark! I hope you'll check out my other videos, too.
@@ThePixelDepotLLC Your videos remind me of the ones put out by Budget Model Railways. Being from England their videos focus on the small layout; both the roundabout and switching (shunting) types. I designed a 14x6 dog bone 🦴 with one end “bit into” that runs locos but the turnouts have never been wired. All are manual.
Instead of continuously working on that layout I found it more refreshing to design smaller layouts that are 2x4, 2x5 and 3x5. The main reason is that I can build the layout, add scenery and have a completed look in a reasonable amount of time. At this point I 100% use Kato track. Apparently I prefer easier very more realistic. But the small size layouts are enjoyable due to their operating potential. Mark
Great video series!.Changed scale. Going from H0 to N scale.
Glad you like the series! N Scale can certainly be a great choice if you’ve only got a small area.
Good stuff, I like how you are going about this new layout of yours!
Thanks, Joe. I'm having a lot of fun with it. Welcome to the channel!
my current layout is point to point. Now talking to my wife was a freaking huge consideration. Otherwise I truly would not have space for even a small N scale layout. As such, the layout run over the head of our bed. The layout is conventional DC and features a few industries and a very small switching yard. While no where close to my dream layout, the layout does feature several items that I have always like. They are as follows, a locomotive service shop, small intermodal terminal (also used as heavy lift track for my two schnabel cars), a grain facility, retail distribution center, and a oil terminal. While four axle motive power is the primary means of moving rail cars, I am also able to run six axle locomotives. The layout is total freelance and carries the name Southern Atlantic Transportation (reporting mark SAXT). On the layout is a combination of CSX and SAXT motive power as the CSX interchanges with SAXT (SAXRT is a class 1 carrier in my world). With the design that I went with, I can rotate cars and motive power out to keep things fresh and interesting. I have my locomotive service shop set up to handle nine locomotives with eight axles (yes the DD40AX). The main shop building features a 200 ton over head traveling crane.
Over to the intermodal terminal, it's a single track set up. When not in use as a container terminal, it can be used as team track, auto rack terminal, and heavy lift track (for those high and wide loads). So while I wont be pulling long trains, with switch points facing both directions, there is a ton of switching that will be taking place.
Sounds like you've thought it out quite a bit. I approve! 😉
Great video. I used to think little or nothing at all could be done on a shelf layout. Until I found Central Los Andes. Check it out if you haven´t. Simply amazing. Thanks for the upload! Cheers!
Ever thought about the Murphy Bed concept? Pull it down when you need it and put it up when you're through. Possibly even double your depth.
my last layout was 40ft x 20ft on two levels.... i could and did run 100+ car trains...... recently moved home..... now building a switching layout,,, my spare room is 12ft x 10ft... its been fun designing the layout
Large layouts are great if you have the time and resources to build them. But often smaller layouts can be just as satisfying, especially if your favorite parts of the hobby don’t revolve around operating.
I am building the furniture factory very similar to yours. Mine will be approximately four inches deep rather than a flat. It will be against the backdrop but more spacious. Also was already planning to build the apartment buildings ( three side by side with center building set to the front with the other two set back.
Let me know how things work out!
I really truly don't have very much space
Do you have any space at all?
Nice video, thanks , really well presented. I'm already a 'convert'.. I'm British and my last layout 'Greenville' was the biggest thing I've ever built at 13 feet! (see my channel) Although my YPRR Alcos and stock are in storage - I'm between layouts at the moment - I can feel the switching bug starting to itch, so this helped to form some thoughts :-) Subbed.
Thanks for subscribing! I’d love to hear more about your plans!
I’m looking to get back into the hobby and while it is true I can’t dedicate a whole room to a large highly detailed layout that doesn’t mean that I cannot run trains also I am disabled and legally blind so I can’t see smaller equipment like n and z scale very well I do have almost 20 years experience with ho scale I’ve been in the hobby since I was about 10
Welcome back to the hobby! You're absolutely right that you can run trains in a small space. I hope you'll watch the whole series on The Grunge (currently up to 12 or 13 episodes) including (especially?) the one on the operating session. czcams.com/video/D0MsNjH2DTo/video.html
I built my warehouse out of 2 cardboard boxes and an old roof shingle
I run N scale and I barley have a loop, and im tired of it. I really have no space in a basement or my room.
How big is your loop? Is it just a circle? If it's any bigger than that, you probably have space for at least some switching.
What scale did u use
I’m building The Grunge in HO scale.
It's not that they don't have the space for a layout. Their wives and live in girlfriends don't have the space for pretty much anything of his.
Sorry but just talking about it isn't helpful. I expected some real information.
Sorry it didn’t help. How could it have been better?
These videos are nothing but you talking and not doing anything.
The first steps are mostly a mental exercise. If you follow along in the series activity starts very shortly. That said, what did you expect to see (so I can improve)?
