@Not Sure It's only been out publicly for a few minutes but him and people with memberships I think are able tyo acess it earlier
@Not Suremaybe it was scheduled?
"It's not a kid's movie, it's a movie about kids". Well said!
Kids that ROCK 🤘🏻
@Sugar Boi y e s.
Me watching it as a kid in band class
@Sugar Boi rocked. There’s that one “kid” who died a few years ago. Pretty sure he played Freddy the drummer.
@Grey sameee
What I love is that Jack's character talks to the kids like they're people, he doesn't automatically see them as stupid/dumb because they're young.
Mike White, who plays Ned, wrote the movie. Looking at his credits it's pretty understandable how he has written such a natural sounding movie that doesn't smack you in the face with a message or talk down to the audience. He's written and produced episodes for Dawson's Creek and Freeks and Geeks so he knows how to write for a teenage audience. He also created Enlightened and The White Lotus and wrote Orange County, The Good Girl and Nacho Libre so he's just a very good filmmaker overall.
His writing with Jack Blacks acting and improve skills was a recipe for success.
@FaintAcrobat and he was hilarious on survivor
He’s better than J.K Simmons character in Whiplash who openly insults people just for their lack of talent in music
So true
As all my favorite teachers did. Including my hs band director.
"I'm not a satanic sex god anymore" best line i've ever heard in my life
I’m a working stiff lol 😂
And that’s cool 😂
Nah mate read between the lines
One aspect i love about this move is how JB's character goes from being a slacker pulling a scheme to get a quick buck, to an actual, competent teacher, he teaches the kids music theory, history of rock, he makes a syllabus, he selects records for each kid to inspire their respective instrument playing, etc.., if you look at the "History of Rock" diagram he shows to the class, that thing looks intricate as hell and probably not something he could write in an afternoon. He realizes he's being a positive impact on them, so he starts preparing his classes, learning how to connect with the kids and actually putting effort in something since the first time in probably ever.
The movie is as much about Jack Black helping the kids as it is about the kids helping Jack Black
"They touched him, and he more then likely touched them"
Super well put! Makes me want to rewatch it all over again 😊
I didn't catch that. I thought it was just something he knew from being in the music scene so long. But this is more plausible!
@Raine Mueller Even if he had previous knowledge some of the stuff he did still probably took a lot of planning and effort like selecting specific albums for different band members
Rest in Peace to Kevin Clark who played Freddy Jones the drummer. He was an extremely skilled drummer in real life and killed it in this movie
So sad about this 😢
Bro that sucks 😢😭 I was a happier person seconds ago
Oh man, that line about how kids are creating their own permanent record online is SO TRUE.
My friend (in her 30's) lost her teaching job at a private religious school because of decades old posts on her private Facebook page that contained a curse word or were about celebrating Halloween. Someone on her "friends" list printed them out to show the principal to say she isn't fit to teach at their school. It was ridiculous.
Wow that "friend" is a dedicated petty person who betrayed her. I hope ur friend is okay💗.
The school is idiotic to fire her for that. That sucks!
BRO- I’d sue the school and ditch that “friend” who told the school…
Yeah, and the kids today are permanently documenting themselves doing and saying objectively terrible things, including committing crimes.
Jack Black has even said that this film was the pinnacle of his career. That man is just a gift.
After all he made the song that goes: This one is for my one and only true love
Princess Peach
Peach, you're so cool
And with my star, we're gonna rule
Peach, understand
I'm gonna love you 'til the very end
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
I love you, oh
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
I love you, oh
Mario, Luigi, and a Donkey Kong too
A thousand troops of Koopas couldn't keep me from you
Princess Peach, at the end of the line
I'll make you mine, oh
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
I love you, oh
Peaches, Peaches, Peach, Peach
He deserved an Oscar for this role honestly
@UnitedAgainstFurries I didn't have a warning for this heart breaking banger to be in the comments 🥺🥺🥺🥺
i would say it was shallow hal 😂
Lawrence is basically just me except for places types of glasses that look more like Jeffrey Dahmer’s and then boom you have me do you think he’s also want to come at the frog
Jack Black is one of those actors you really can't replace, and it shows. That man can make any movie he's in entertaining.
He just melts into every role he has. It’s amazing
He was hilarious in Jumanji
Nice pfp I really like that game
I don't think anyone could've played this as well as Jack Black. Love how Alex Brightman, who played the character in the broadway version, is kinda like his musical twin
I love Alex Brightman!! He is so good as Beetlejuice and Fizzarolli! And think he did so good as Jack Black’s musical twin lol also i made you get 69😈
That's pretty much the best way to describe Alex Brightman lol. And now it's making me picture Jack Black playing his version of Beetlejuice and I'm not mad honestly 😂😂
Robert Tsai, the boy who played Lawrence, approached Mike White and told him how he didn't feel like he was right for the part. Mike White used this interaction as inspiration for the cafeteria scene between Lawrence and Dewey.
Also, this movie had one of rhe best soundtracks ever!
Mike White is awesome.
Jack Black is just one of those guys that, when you see he's casted in a movie, you know that whatever part he's gonna play will be the highlight of the entire production.
That line "Everybody wants to party with Arethaaaaa!!" stayed with me all these years as a wonderful and positive statement :)
Movies like this one genuinely help kids out.
Who else thinks Jack Black is a national treasure?
Oh 100%!
@Synthetic Reality Oh 1000%!
I’ll be honest, if aliens landed and we had to pick someone to represent humanity, he’d be up there
No, he is a GLOBAL TREASURE that we mere mortals do not deserve!
Excuse you, he's a world heritage treasure! Don't go tieing him to just one country 🤘🤘🤘
I think a big part of why early 2000's movies felt that way was because 2008 hadn't happened yet. We watch early 2000's movies now and are like "that guy punching an alien t-rex in the face can afford a three story house on a McDonald's salary, that's so unrealistic".
That is kind of true
2008 just exacerbated a problem that was already occurring. Wages have been stagnant since the 1980s.
@Lord Chevonlier
The point was that there was still a much greater sense of hope and even happiness than in the current era, all of which naturally bled into the films that were made at the time.
Even our happier films now can put the intentionally "edgy" stuff back then to shame, simply because that's where our collective consciousness seems to lie at the moment.
@S.A.M. I’ve talked to my parents before about what they think the biggest differences between the 2000s and now are. Both of them have said that 1. Cellphones and social media weren’t as prevalent as they are now, and 2. People were generally way less cynical than they are now. My dad said there were still a lot of people who were angry all the time, but that wasn’t the standard and it didn’t seep into everything like it seems to now. He attributes this change mainly to 1, social media, but I say that like everything it has to be multi-factorial.
@Asio Flammeus To take into consideration - Social Media/Cellphones in general have increased the visibility of the anger, but also that this mindset isn't just "local" but worldwide due to how we can now see what we couldn't before that time.
It's just great that Jack Black doesn't try to pretend the girl isn't fat, just that she can shine and accomplish something great in spite of it!
I love how inclusive this movie is. The kids are just people!
One of the most insane things about this movie (to me, at least) is the big battle of the bands concert with very many attendees HAPPENING DURING SCHOOL HOURS. Like, what clubs are even OPEN before 3PM?! The timing of the battle of the bands is, imo, the least realistic or believable thing about the entire movie.
I feel like this is one of those films where you kind of have to have practically no sense of disbelief to watch. 😂
But that's fine because its character driven and the characters are phenomenal. So many satisfying arcs with a wonderful conclusion. At least imo. 👌
lol My brain filled in the plot hole with: "they obviously have to get there during school hours to do sound check, get checked in etc...the actual battle happens later in the day and they're an early/first act" 😅
Doing School of Rock as a theatre production was insane, one of the best and weirdest things ever
I remember even as a kid watching this movie I thought it was so cool how he never judged any of the kids for their differences in like, social norms and never questioned or made them feel bad. He was just unwaveringly supportive. And in such a natural way 🥹
Can we just appreciate how legendary Jack Black truly is?
From the Legend of the Rent to Peaches, this man is truly a master bard
This continues to be one of my all-time favorite movies. The song they perform at Battle of the Bands is a total banger. “You’re tacky and I hate you” will never get old.
Jack Black is just one of those guys who truly to oozes Charisma even in situations where it really shouldn't work.
Truly, he's a real Nat 20 Bard if there ever was one.
This movie introduced me to Jack Black when I was a kid. There's never a dull moment with him! What an underrated classic!
It sure was, crazy and fun...so iconic. A film for all ages that never gets old. .R.I.P Freddie/Kevin Clark
The harmonies killed it 🎉 once you get enough songs please release an album 😂
00s movies were family movies. it all got ruined when they started making "teen" movies written by people in their 30s.
Nah this is so real
Like 2002's Scooby Doo? James Gunn was in his 30s when he wrote that
They can't use actual children do to child labor laws. That's why the actors are always older.
This so accurate
@Master Knife scooby doo isn't a teen movie though. talking more like Twilight or american pie ish
Fun fact: This movie now has a musical based off of it! Starring Alex Brightman, who does a really good Jack Black impression. I'd recommend listening to the soundtrack, if only for 'Give Up Your Dreams'.
Beetlejuice now encourages children the musical? I already love it
Award Winning Composer: Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the Stage Musical. And there’s a scene in this movie where Miranda Cosgrove sings Memory from Cats, another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
As a Project Manager, I have never been so offended by something I 100% agree with
sorry I didnt get the project manager joke
I've seen this one like ten times, I saw it at school when I was a kid, I've seen it with my parents, I've seen it with friends. It never gets old, it's just miles ahead of anything similar that gets made today.
Rest in Peace to Kevin Clark, who played Freddy the Drummer ❤
The french fries at a buffet thing is such an important lesson, it should be in EVERY kids' movie, yo. Make it happen, Alex! :D
15:35 - 16:40 I tell ya, if this man goes completely unacknowledged in the music industry, I will be personally offended on his behalf
Sam ehere, we'll start a riot
Oooh an up and coming youtube cartoonist
I need a full version of this song 😂
❤
@Callmejazzy lol me too
this movie is legitimately one of my absolute favorites. the storyline, message, jokes, are all amaizng and the music is phenomenal. i just love everything about it idc how stupid others may think it is.
Jack Black oozes confidence and charisma, the man was born to entertain.
This was my favorite movie as a kid and I'm pretty sure it played a role in me becoming a music teacher lol
Don't think I've seen this movie since high school but I saw this in theaters. If I remember anything, it was how positive and supportive Jack Black was of the kids. I honestly believe he's genuinely this good of a side to the people he meets
honestly, this movie gave me a better superhero fantasy than any actual superhero movie.
we just not gonna talk about that absolute banger Alex produced?
I want the full song!
I want it all
YES
Alex always makes the best parody songs for some of his videos! 😂
Alex Meyers single release when?
You know what’s funny is that despite the fact that this was made in the early 2000s this movie is surprisingly more inclusive then most shows today.
School of Rock is legitimately my favorite movie of all time. Anytime someone asks me what my favorite movie is, this is always my first answer. I’ve been a huge music fan my entire life, and this movie mixes everything perfectly. The charm, the writing, the dry humor, the music, jack black, the first band scene, literally everything about this movie is perfect. (If you ever want to have an amazing night, get drunk and watch this movie with your friends or family)
I love that Alex just will randomly burst into song. He just makes random songs and it's great
This movie changed my life as a kid, no joke. And it’s really one of the only movies that can still make me emotional for whatever reason. A true modern classic!
I adore this movie more and more as I get older. The script and cast is truly top tier.
I loved this movie as a kid.
Now I'm a music teacher in an Elementary school and... well, I have to admit I would have thrown my hands in the air a few times if I had a colleague like Jack Black's character, but overall I do like his philosophy even though his methods are crazy to say the least.
Can we just appreciate this man’s art for a bit?Alex never disappoints
Fr an the little song he did too
This is honestly my favorite Jack Black movie. I still can't believe in 2021 we lost Kevin Clark who played the drummer Freddy Jones.
I've loved this movie since I first watched it in the early 2000s as a kid. It still holds up and it's still one of my favorites.
This was my favorite film from back then. I was in like 3rd or 4th grade when it came out and I loved it. Soon as the DVD came out, I asked for it and got it lol your video helped me realize why I liked it so much, because of how natural it was. Like it wasn’t all cheesy and lecturing at it’s audience, it just was. It’s still one of my favorite films ever and I like it even more after hearing your analysis of it.
This was an awesome movie. I totally agree on how when Jack Black talked to the kids about "sticking it to the man" sounds very real and not forced.
I was someone who found SOR through the musical first and I was super pleasantly surprised. I knew it would be great because, well, its Jack black and I already loved the musical, win win. I adore both now!
Something I thought was a fun difference from version to version was Dewey's "age" not literally but mentally. To me, in the original he comes off as a pretty self-assured uncle type figure. He's more blunt, he has a bit more self awareness, and while he's obviously immature I'd say its more of an act of defiance than not knowing better.
In contrast I'd say while both are childish, the Dewey of the musical seems more like an older brother. His confidence is mostly for show, he's insecure, he's snarky but not as quick witted, I'd go as far to say he's not as smart. To me, he reads like he's got much less life lived, Movie Dewey has been the way he is for a long time and musical Dewey is still figuring it out.
I think its fun how different actors and writers can make different flavors of the same character. Of course I get why a lot of movie fans might dislike the musical, but I personally find a lot of charm in both versions! I didn't go into the musical expecting Jack Black, but I'm personally glad the musical isn't a carbon copy. Plus, I adore both Jack Black and Alex Brightman (and the other musical Deweys) so both are a lot of fun for me. :>
I hope Jack black lives till he’s 100. A man like him is a once in a lifetime kind of person I just love the guy so much
To be honest, this movie holds up really well. I agree that is nice to have inclusion in such an organic way
'I'm not a temp I'm a sub' Is the most underrated line in this movie 😂
I love this movie, one of my favorites. The suspension of disbelief works well because the characters are just so relatable.
this is that one movie on Netflix u watch after getting tired of looking for another movie lol
And you won't regret it.
@Elisa Maza exactly! It’s an ol’ reliable. May not be the first choice but you can always fall back to it.
exactlyy
It’s such a timeless film. You can watch this any time and that’s pretty awesome
This is and likely forever will be my favorite movie of all time I can almost quote the whole thing line by line
I saw this movie in theaters as a kid and can proudly say as a 30 year-old this movie is still amazing. Jack Black is phenomenal and he was meant to shine in this role!
This is one of my favourites and always will be! It sends a great message and is just fun!🤘🏻
Alex’s 2003 song is unironically very similar to an older 5 seconds of summer song so I legitimately thought he was covering it for a moment there. crazy stuff
The early 2000's was such a great time for movies
And the early 2010s was great for turning those same movies into musical theater productions. “School of Rock” and “Bring it On” have both been adapted into awesome musicals.
This movie almost singlehandedly sparked a passion for music within me as a kid. I was about the same age as the kids in the movie when it came out and I was absolutely mesmerized by everything about it. I can't even tell you how many times I fantasized about this situation happening to me where a cool sub comes in and forms a band with the students. I played that scenario out in my head all the time as a kid lol, I was completely obsessed with it. Needless to say I have started some bands of my own in the years since, but if I had to point out the one single biggest factor that led me to really wanting to be a musician, it was this movie. After seeing this movie for the first time, I begged my parents for a guitar and finally got one for Christmas not long after. After not really knowing where to start in terms of learning the guitar (I was maybe 8 or 9 at the time and didn't take lessons), I kinda sidelined guitar and began to have more interest in playing drums instead. I actually got pretty good at drums just by teaching myself, but a few years later the electric guitar urge started coming back stronger than ever before. I begged my parents again to get me a guitar and wound up with a Squier Strat, which I then used as I taught myself via youtube videos. I instantly became hooked on guitar and still am today. I still like drums and do play them sometimes, but guitar was always my number one choice deep down, and that truly was largely because of this movie. To this day I will still watch it anytime I see it's on TV somewhere. I really wish I could meet Jack Black someday just to let him know how much this movie has seriously shaped my life. It's an all-timer for me.
Your animations are fantastic! I know I've said it before, but it's REALLY good with your commentary! You could talk about the most boring movies ever and I would still watch lmao. Also, the cop animations are great xD
I always find myself coming back to this movie throughout the the years because of the wholesome scenes of Jack Black and the kids, and that banger of a song tbey sing. 🤟
As a teacher, you hit the nail on the head about the part what every teacher wishes they could say. In this day and age, teachers are only a hairline away from saying something along that line 😂😂😂
This is up there as one of my favorite movies, I love how he connects with the kids so well. Jack Black was the best actor for this movie.
"I have been touched by your kids... And I'm pretty sure that I've touched them!" That line always flew right over my head as a child, but now I find it darkly hilarious!
I don't get it....?
*OH.*
I remember watching this movie in 1st grade music class ('03 the movie was fresh out I think), and the teacher would fast forward through all the "not child appropriate" parts which of course was most of the movie 😂😂
Literally one of my favorite movies. If I'm ever sad I turn it on.
Mike White, who plays Ned, is an incredible writer. Love all his stuff including White Lotus. Great film to review!!
It can't think of the last time I wanted to watch a movie I missed twenty years ago, but this might be one.
22s ago
Edit : first
This was one of my fave movies as a kid, I rewatched it a year ago and still loved it. Loved seeing your take!
Think I first watched this movie in 2015. At the time (and of course, to this day) I was into classic rock, hard rock, metal etc, thus compelling me to watch this. But the message is more than just "rock rules, classical music sucks, rebel against your parents!" Like Alex said it's portrayed beautifully how he inspires the kids, grows a relationship with them, and helps them develop talents they didn't know they had. And it comes off so organically and not forced like it would if it was made today. Great movie!
The cast for the 2016 Nickelodeon one did a great job acting out the original characters
That pop-punk song pastiche tho. That was one of the most inspired Alex jokes, like, ever.
Also, 100% agree with your thoughts on the film, which mirror mine the first time I saw it as a late-20something or early 30something male.
It was one of my favorite movies as a kid, I still love it 👐🏻
17:19 we're against her because she keeps telling Ned to stand up for himself when in reality she's the one telling him what to do.
Saying that modern musicians look like the walls in a gas station bathroom is probably the most hilarious and accurate summary of them that I’ve heard so far 😂
This movie is just incredible. Just the way Jack is with the kids especially "Fancypants" as you say it would have been considered not normal 20 yr ago but the way he was just like yeah you do you mate!
Rewatching this, I never realized how based Dewey is.
-Tells Ned “Bros before hoes” and to dump Patty.
-Is ready and willing to beat misbehaving kids
-Dismantles the oppressive classroom system
-Accepts all the kids
The first one, Ned’s girlfriend is right. He was lazy and living with them for free. Also, he was a bad friend for making feel Ned bad about being a teacher
Written villain: Patty
Actual villain: Dewey
Patty is right but she is written as really naggy plus is she living with them and is she giving Dewey him her money?Cause I don’t really she how she would care. It would have been better written if Ned was the one annoyed at Dewey’s mooching and Patty was more voicing his frustration. Where as in the movie Ned was fine with it and he was only being harsh to keep
Patty. In the musical it seems more clear that they are both supporting Dewey so at Patty frustration is more justified. I wish they made that clearer in the movie
Honestly Alex your humour in this was top tier, I’ve just stumbled into your channel but imma go binge now, take my sub
Man the number of times I'll quote the hangover lesson up to the point he tells Freddy Jones (rip) to shut up. I'm running a d&d game set in a magic school and am waiting for the right moment to reference it in game 😂 I love this movie so much ❤
Jack Black is an irreplaceable actor.
This is one of my favorites. My mom introduced me to it and we still quote it and talk about it to this day. Such a great film.
I remember I read something (And forgive me for my oversimplification) about the tragedy in film culture which is the loss of "the family movie". A movie that parents and kids could like for the SAME reasons and watch together. It wasn't something you put on the ipad and left your kid with, it wasn't something you hid on your laptop so your parents wouldn't find out you were watching a "grown up" film, it was something everyone in the house gathered around for, and thoroughly enjoyed AS A FAMILY. I think the closest thing we've gotten as of recently is "Mitchells vs The Machines" (Which was STILL very bare bones and a little too 'kiddy' for me, but still a family film) because you could tell the people who wrote it... HAD kids, and understood how parents and children acted together.
EDIT: I also want to make it clear that I do not count fantasy movies in this description. This is specifically about family centered sitcoms and movies, not about fantasy, which- while it can have the same appeals, is ultimately more story driven and adventure oriented next to solely being a story about a family. I can't explain this in a way that makes sense for some reason, so I hope you get what I mean.
Puss in Boots: Last Wish is a great recent family movie imho even though If I was a kid I would probably leave the cinema scarred for life from the Death scenes...
@Cepheon I never would have survived that movie as a kid 😅
Families are still being made, wdym? Perhaps they're not as common as before, especially when the G-rating stopped being used on most "family movies," but they're still very much around.
Hulu’s Grimcutty is a good family horror film with a good family message.
The problem is people just stopped going to these kind of movies. I saw Are you there God? It's Me Margaret last month and it was exactly the kind of family film that did not talk down to kids and was also one of the best films I've seen all year...and it was playing in a mostly empty theater. I don't know whether it's because it's too expensive to take a family to theaters these days or the advent of streaming causing parents to just play something on Netflix for their kids to keep them distracted but when even great family films flop in theaters it's not hard to see why studios have abandoned them.
School of Rock is to this day still my favorite Jack Black film. What a timeless classic.
This movie was part of what got me into metal I was already into rock like acdc led zeppelin rose tattoo screaming jets the angels kiss baby animals but thanks to this movie I discovered black sabbath and motorhead then I went further and further down the rabbit hole deep down now I discovered bands like acid bath pantera allegiance megadeth exhorder voivod abuse eyehategod whiplash demolition hammer morbid saint morbid angel possessed death entombed dismember demilich fatal array
I actually loved this movie, not just when I was a kid, but rewatching it now in my 20s. Glad to see other people actually remember it!
The one thing that always sticks out in my head is a reused plot point from Tenacious D. In the Tenacious D movie, Saitan had to pay the rent, if he lost. Funnily enough, Jack's character was once again trying to make good on the rent. It was at this time I noticed it and was just waiting for the next time he has rent issues in a movie.
Jack Black is by far one of my favorite actors of all time
Top 2 for me
Yup, this is by far his most memorable role he's had for me
(Later Kung Fu panda was added on the list too but at this time of watching it I was a kid who didn't know he voiced Po)
Fourthed, Jack Black is such a charismatic actor, love him in "The Holiday", "The Kung Fu Panda" movies and the "Jumanji" series.
@Trina Q He was the only one who made me laugh in the Jumanji movie tbh 😅
@DittoWatching Jack Black play a teenage girl is the highlight of the movie for me
i remember seeing this when it came out and thinking it was alright, i wouldn't say its a masterpiece or even jack black's best work but it delivered exactly what you'd expect from a film about this topic without being overly cringe or cheesy
My sister and I grew up on this. It introduced us to a lot of cool music. "You're tacky and I hate you." is an iconic line in our house.
16:22 this song could of been a hit back then ngl
Deweys' animated walk is on another level.
I definitely love this movie very much! I loved that he didn't judge not one child and got to know them individually..the last scenes at the concert were awesome
“Yeah that checks out” had me dying for a minute
It's funny because it's true.
@Mallory Carpinski yes I can totally see it happening. Anything can happen when jack black is in the room
Same 😂
This is the movie inspired me to be a music teacher. Glad to see it holds up!
I love musicals, and when I went to go watch this in the theatre they had the kids play the instruments live! Probably one of my favourite musicals I’ve watched live just because it was so much fun.
I'm surprised no one mentions Richard Linklater's direction. He really knows how to work with and direct movies about kids, some good examples, Boyhood, Dazed and Confused, Apollo 10 1/2
Dazed and Confused is an incredible movie, absolutely seconded
One of my guilty pleasures and the reason I started to write songs and be in a band! ❤
