Landscape Photography - Coastal seascape compositions with the Nikon D800

  • We took a quick trip down to Gracetown for the weekend, and got amongst to wineries, breweries and Karri trees.
    I took a walk around the beaches of Gracetown first and photographed some of the amazing waves as well as the equally amazing surfers that had the skills to ride them. Canal Rocks, just north of Gracetown, was out destination for the first morning. It was there we found the a few seascape compositions, that used the canal as leading line into the image. At just the right time the clouds started to form over the rocks and gorgeous pinks and oranges begun to appear.
    With two images in the can, we started to make our way back to the car when I came across the third compositor where the massive waves were crashing into the large boulders. I positioned myself at an angle so I could capture the power of the wave as it explored behind the rocks. The contrast making a great black and white image.

    Andrew, thanks for the effort you put into your videos which I only came across after we had returned to the UK after this year’s visit to our son not too far from you in Kingsley. In particular your seascape videos have shown me a whole new way of looking at the beaches, which I had found particularly frustrating to photograph. I’m also going through the videos trying to pin point the locations in preparation for next January’s visit which will include a week near Albany. Keep up the good work!

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks Brian, it must be interesting to see some of these place on CZcams that you'll be so familiar with. Your right, Kingsley is not very far away at all...pretty much next suburb across. Landscape photography in Perth can be challenging, don't get me wrong, we have some beautiful locations, but I'll be the first to admit that the conditions can made it hard work. The beaches particularly can be difficult in summer with the wind and seaweed. I glad the videos have helped you look the location differently. I have created a playlist just of the places around Albany that might be helpful. czcams.com/video/IbzyVK5WrzA/video.html Thanks so much for your comment!

    • @BrianHorsey
      @BrianHorsey Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply and the play list. ‘Recognise’ is more appropriate than ‘so familiar with’ at the moment as the family has been in Perth less than three years but as long as we can fit on a plane we’ll be coming back. My beach photography frustration was in trying to capture the huge expanse of the beaches and turquoise water which is so different to the scenery here. An entirely different frustration has been remembering, once I went to plot the locations of the water falls you visited, that we left all the maps and guide books in Kingsley as it seemed pointless carrying them backwards and forwards each time. Thank goodness for Google Maps!

I value most the way you walk through your thought process for deciding composition, very insightful. As someone just getting start with landscape photography one bit of information that I'd love to see included in our videos is your focus point and maybe why you choose a certain focus point. If that is too beginner-ish I understand. Keep up the great work.

  • @brucemccredie2689

    Another great vlog Andrew. I particularly enjoyed the surf and wave images at the beginning. What lens combination were you using and was a polariser used also? What do you recommend as a good shutter speed to capture the wave detail and movement you captured in those images?

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  Před 7 lety

      Thanks Bruce, I was experimenting with a different style for the video footage. Testing out some new gear. It was a lot of fun, I'll try an do more of it soon! I shot the waves images my 70-200mm with the 2x teleconverter (which makes the lens equivalent to 140-400mm), with no polariser. Depending on the style of image I'm after for the waves I'l vary my shutter speed. If I want to capture crisp action then I'll try for a shutter speed close to 1/1000 sec. If I'm after a more painterly style, I'll shoot at 1/3 sec, but this is usually trying to capture reflections off the water. So here I was going for a faster shutter speed, 1/400 (late in the evening) up to 1/8000 (during the stronger harsher light, earlier in the afternoon).

    Gorgeous photos, Andrew!
    I've always been hesitant to use the grad when the horizon is uneven, especially when there's a massive mid-ground element in the scene (like the one in your photo). Questions on using the hard grad: Where do you place the grad line? Do you place your grad line really low to cover all mid-ground elements? If so, if some parts get too dark, do you just lighten those areas in post-production? Or you just bracket and blend later on?

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks Glenn, the line of the hard grad just touched the top of the rocks in the mid ground and really didn't effect the light of the rocks much at all. I lifted the exposure across all of the rocks anyway in Lightroom anyway and didn't notice any significant darkening where the filter was over the rocks, hope that helps! :)

    Great shots Andrew. Curious to know if you considered using a small or big stopper to get some more movement? Also, digging the drone content - is it difficult to manoeuvre?

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you! I did consider it, however I wanted a 0.5 to 1 second shutter to capture just slight movement in the water, any longer and it would have blurred the water too much and made it look like soup. Also an exposure of that length kept the clouds nice and crisp. I realise I should have explained that in the video...I'll try and remember to do that in the future. Loving the drone, love flying it and I also enjoy the footage I can get from it. It's very easy to fly, you just need to know a little about what you should and shouldn't do with it (common sense stuff really). I'm still learning how to get the most out of it, thanks for sharing your feedback, I'm glad you're enjoying the drone footage as well.

    • @screwge84
      @screwge84 Před 7 lety

      Thanks Andrew. I personally think the big stopper long exposure effect can be overdone so I can appreciate that you had a vision in mind and captured that. I was tossing up between a drone or filters but I know I'll get more use out of the latter. In the meantime I'll have to live vicariously through your drone shots :)

    I am now living overseas. It is great to see the WA coastal scenery! Does the combining a polarizer and ND filter have an enhancing effect. I was surprised you used the polarizer before the sun had risen.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  Před 7 lety

      Thank you Marcel, glad I can share some of the familiar WA coast with you. The circular polariser not only cuts down the glare but also enhances some of the colours. The ND filter darkens the sky so I can have a longer exposure and as a result capture more detail in the shadows like the rocks in the foreground, it effectively balances out the image. The polariser doesn't deal with direct light all that well, but it's very good at dealing with reflected light, both off the clouds - enhancing the colour, and off the water - cutting the glare. I use the polariser on most shots (just not at night).

    • @marcelgoodman6769
      @marcelgoodman6769 Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks Andrew. I was recently back and was doing some sunset photography on Shoalwater Bay with the circular polarizer in place. I continued to use it until there was virtually no light with interesting effect. In the past, I did not use it enough

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  Před 7 lety

      Great to hear you're experimenting with the polariser, it really is a very useful filter. The more you use it the more you'll become familiar with the effect it can have on your images. Remember with circular polarisers you can adjust the amount of polarisation it has (by turning the polariser). You won't always want the polariser at full effect.

    • @marcelgoodman6769

    Awesome video, keep it up! If you would need to buy a new camera for around 2k which one would it be and why? :)

      Thanks Rob, this is a tough question. It depends on so many factors like what you plan on doing with it. I'm of the thinking that you should always get the best camera you can for your money. If I assume you want to shoot landscape images, I'd look at getting a D800 (or D810) secondhand, they are brilliant cameras. If you wait for Nikon to release the upgrade, there will be heaps of D810 on the market. Then adding a lens (again second hand) you likely wouldn't need to go much wider than 20mm. If you are just starting out, even the kit lenses are great and there a usually plenty of them going cheap second hand as well. Alternatively the Nikon D610 is fantastic (don't get the D600). Another option would be to go with Fuji (like the X-T1 or X-T2). Hope that helps, best of luck!

    Wow! What images. Are you shooting in manual or aperture priority? Please excuse the dumb question.

    Hey! Is it a bad idea to buy the d800 used for 500 dollars with a shutter count of 101.000?

      That sounds like a pretty good deal, I sold my D800 for about $1000, about 2 years ago!

      Yes, it's a good platform, check it out, the approval in 500px depends on your visibility...so number of follower which are not hard to gain for a person who have a youtube channel.

    Sorry I'm a bit impatient so I couldn't watch the video due to all the intro videos. Looks like it would have been good.

      That's a pity Pat, I like to share a little of the story about where the location is. I try to limit the intro to 1 to 2 mins and throw in some drone footage to get you through!
