Let's be honest, surgeons (and even other physicians) can be very emotionally childish, yelling and having temper-tantrums. I had an anesthesiologist yell at me one day while I was working on a nursing unit, he was upset because the secretary had left her desk and I couldn't find the surgical consent packets. I looked him in the eye and said "I am not YOUR personal secretary, and I will not be spoken to like that, find the packet yourself" and I walked away! I will not tolerate that kind of bullshit from a doctor or anyone else!

I was a scrub tech for 17 years. I met many that became a first assist but I was already first assisting and making more than the first assist. I also never had those experiences of being yelled at like that during those 17 years. I could not justify paying to go back to school to become a certified first assist when I was already doing so.
I just became a certified PA as that was the next step for me. There is not much more to learn in surgery for me. Surgical tech is an amazing intro to being in medicine. Just keep a cool mind and pay very close attention and be willing to ask questions. Also study your anatomy!!! Also work in nothing but trauma centers and at night if you can. You will learn it all. Amazing field and I will miss it. It is also a good way to get into PA school!!
