How to Fully upgrade Ares INFERNO / ION + Torpedoes (Tutorial)

  • Today we are taking our Crusader Ares Ion / Inferno Star Fighter and we are going to upgrade it completely. From Shields to size 5 torpedoes. If you are new player or you struggle to upgrade your ship, this is the tutorial for you.

    When it comes to upgrading your missle sitze you should keep in mind that this can result in a lower potential damage of your missles. For better explaining i will use a HammerHead and the Ares Ion as examples...
    In stock it comes with 32xS3 missles: 16x Arrester III and 16x Viper III. Arrester deals 2526dmg per missle and the Viper deals 3219 dmg per missle = 91933 potential damage in total. If you upgrade to S5 missles/Torpedos the HH fields 8xS5 Scimitar V's missles. 16383 damage per missle results in = 131060 potential damage. So far so good.
    Ares Ion. Stock 13xS3 Arresters III (with locked Rack. Sitze is fix). And 2 racks with 4xS3 Viper III each. Total Potential damage = 56072.
    Upgrading both Viper racks to S5 Skimitars will result in 63082 potential damage. The damage increase isnt that high like it is for the HH.
    For ships with a Larve amount of missles this works out but for smaller ships with limited racks or missle capacity its a different story. Here it could be better to downgrade the missle sitze. Example for the Ares Ion:
    If you down Grade the S3 Viper racks to S2 Rattlers II's ( 4070 damage per missle ) you reach a potential missles damage of 95437 damage. What is significantly higher then with the S5 missles.
    The rule is: downgrading doubles your amount of missles from size to size and upgrading halves your amount of missles!!!
    So keep in mind. For considering your loadout decide what you like more or what is better suited for what you want to do ingame.
    Bigger missles can blow up an ship in one salvo. 2 Scimitar V are enough for Valkyries, Vanguards and Hurricanes. Same with 4 S3 missles. But if you maybe get yourself into a battle with more enemys ( random PvP or a friend need fast help) you maybe want to have more lower size missles to fight longer or dont need to restock after every mission and also be able to deal more missle damage in total. Thats Up to you. Hope i could help a bit with the infos. Fly safe Out there ..

      Thanks for the info and tips. Only problem with Ion an Inferno you can't change weapon racks with 12 Arstter. Only missiles. For other ships yeah works nicely.

      @@infinitespace239 the Ares has a special rack yes. But the others you can change. Offers a bit variety and you have still the 12xS3 as back up for a bigger Impact. I personally Like the Rattlers II and use them as main ordonance in every ship cause the cluster spread is just nice to watch and If you combine sub-section targeting like engines turrets and then look on each cluster missle will Look in tobthat sub-section. Plus Cluster missles are a pain to counter cause 4 missles will turn into 32 and are hard to flair/decoy away.Also a good to know every missles locks in to sub-sections like thrusters, engines,turrets etc.

      @@Vision1100 With cluster missiles half of them end up missing the target nearly every time, so that DPS might not be accurate.

      @@WallySketch thats why i said potential damage. Cause If you miss it lowers the dmg. And ibdont rly think that we can speak about dps with missles. It doesnt feels right cause of arming time lock on time and then the time Till they eventually hit after firing. But i got your point. But its the Same with all Weapons with some knowledge you can use them properly. In my case its means use a Constelation Andromeda and pepper the enemys with missles xD

    I can't believe it never occurred to me to add size 5 torps to my Inferno loadout. Going to give this a try tonight. Should make my Inferno even deadlier for ERT's

      @@infinitespace239 Oddly, I gave them a try last night on a number of VHRT's and ERT's, and they just didn't seem to do anything. It's weird--like they didn't even hit the targets. I'm wondering if this is a bug.

      ​@@infinitespace239 Yep! That's why I'm surprised. I'll keep using them and see what happens. Could be my range, or maybe the target used flares successfully, etc.

      @@bobbynova7417 Yeah, they can shoot them down sometimes too. You have to be around 250ms and fire from 3.5 to 2.5 km from ship

    I do love to take the Rattlers with the inferno, not sure what the best load out would be dps wise though.

    To be known, currently missiles are bugged and their explosion is passing through shields (expected) AND hull (unexpected). That's the explosion which can damage components and even kill the pilot.
    Also, there is another bug with EM missiles which can be really hard or even impossible to decoy (or noise) away.
    Combining both bugs together, make these missiles perfect for a bug exploit.

    Well just put these s5 babies on my Ion had been running size 2s for spam on both the Ion and Inferno.
    Now I'm keeping inferno as missile spam and brrrt, and the Ion is gonna be ranged ship buster.
    Went Ramparts for shields, heard were better for distortion, and might go stealth coolers on the Ion too.

    i am pretty sure the em, crosssection and ir only refers to the signature that the torpedo uses to track its target i don't think that it has any shutdown effects other then blowing the target up

      Yes, but I was able a few times to disable ships with EM. I could be wrong.

      I have disabled ships with EM missiles as well, although I'm confused about missile types too.

      Cross section, infrared and electromagnetic are just the method they use to track targets. Splash damage is what damages components, just like with ship guns such as the C-788. Missiles differ from each other in more ways than the tracking type (for example; rattlers are a cluster munition, splitting into multiple smaller projectiles before impact) and I believe some have splash damage while others don't.

      You maybe disable the ships cause you damaged the powerplant with the missles. Cause missles arent blocked by shields anymore cause they count as ballistics. Cross, Ir and EM is the way they lock on onto the target and how fast they do it and also what kind of counter messures you need to break the Look on. Noise will break EM look on. Decoy for IR and for cross im Not Sure yet. Sometimes evasive maneuvers are enough.

      @@Vision1100 For cross-section you need to break LOS, that breaks the lock. And you are totally correct, currently there is no such thing as a EMP missile in game. IR/EM/CS refers only to the tracking method the missile uses. However lore-wise the Vanguard Sentinel was supposed to have some e-warfare missiles - those might be something like an EMP missile if they get added one day.

    Are the EM missiles still the best choice after the distortion nerf? didn't change them?
    Edit: Isn't the EM in question the tracking system, not the warhead effect?

      Exactly I was wrong it is just tracking mechanism, the best are now cluster.

    Have you overclocked any systems or played around with further component prioritization? I know prioritization to ballistics doesn't do anything, so leaving guns on 0 and shields and thrusters to 50 each make them stronger? I haven't seen this tested anywhere

      @@jones9319 Currently it doesn't do anything if you overclock weapons. Only when you max power to shields you get stronger shields and faster regeneration.

      @@infinitespace239 Ah, thanks. So added shield regen doesn't occur unless its at 100 for shields? And as an inferno owner I basically should never have power to weapons? haha.

      @@jones9319 well I think you get some percent depending how much you put to shields, but maxed out is the best, since Inferno is all ballistic it can always run at 100 on shield.

    Cig have nerfed the scimitar V.. It is no more beneficial to slap in the S5 torps.. You will be better off swapping all your missles to thunderbolt III and dominator II

      Just buy ships in game if you can, buying ships with $ just hurts the only real grind in the game and makes it more boring after a wipe. Personal opinion but I've had much more fun in this game after melting my fleet back to the aurora starter. You end up with way too many ships as it is.
