I was about to comment this!! It's a story as old as time... Elvis was the white answer to Chuck Berry, Little Richard etc, NKOB the white answer to New Edition, Backstreet Boys/Nync etc the white answer to Blackstreet and every other R&B boy group at that time, and the influx of late 90's/early 2000's teen idols the white answer to Brandy, Monica and Aaliyah. They even all had the same one name only thing pushed...

@@joshuamcdowell9745 Agreed. They could've made some alterations to Tisean to make the character more palatable for Brandy's audience. Like, she could've been a nerdy stem student with coding and hacking skills that allowed her to be truly useful to the robberies, rather than a hapless unwed mother. Her motivation: MIT tuition. And the little boy could've been her nephew rather than her son. They could've made it work... But Kimberly Elise is a force.

Brandy is under appreciated in my generation and in general. She isn’t given the same credit/praise as others because she isn’t a “loud” singer when in reality, she is one of the best vocalists to walk this Earth. Her ear and technicality to make any song sound her own version isn’t talked about enough. I will always admire how she’s always ahead of the curve in terms the sound of R&B. Will always be the blueprint.

    • @Gatsbyesque
      @Gatsbyesque Před 3 lety +4

While you are right, it would’ve served her career better to embrace more of the diaphragm and pharyngeal resonance singing that she was doing when we discovered her and to develop more of those classical abilities along with her signature harmonies and runs. I think that would’ve made her an even more well-rounded and artistically sound vocalist.
Brandy is capable of these show stopping gospel trills that no one can do as effectively as she can (like the one she did while singing “Respect” on Thea) and she never really exploited that to turn it into a feature of her artistry or entertainment skill when it could have been her unique signature.
She has made a mountain of songs that do not require a lot from her vocally, she speaks often about preferring to stay in a comfort zone, thus she sings almost all of her songs in lower keys, even though she can obviously handle high key material, as demonstrated when she did her Whitney tribute at World Pride and sung HWIK in a higher key than the original song without issue. If she had had more control over the logistics of that performance, she would’ve unnecessarily taken the key down to where she usually performs it. There are whole areas of her voice that ppl don’t even get to enjoy lol because they’re satisfied with just the same two parts she always gives. Alas, she avoids climaxes and bridges and straight up avoids the third octave whenever she can. She seems fearful of the sound of her own head voice. I mean, Brandy has just not performed at the peak of her abilities. So, the reputation she has is earned.
I really love her, but I have to be honest. At the end of the day, her vocal reputation as less than powerful is her own fault.
She has power. She “just doesn’t use it.” And that is a choice. A bad choice.

As much as I am a fan of Britney Spears, it is very frustrating that only she is credited as the blueprint of teenage female artists in the music industry when Brandy did it 4 years before her and did it a year younger than her. Brandy (along with Aaliyah) truly did break the mold when it came teenage female artists appealing to both their demographic as well as older generations. That is why they had instant success.

Aaliyah and Brandy were young but they were not the first young stars to break into the industry, its not about Britneys age, she brought bubblegum pop back to the spotlight and became the it girl with insane success. Thats why everyone wanted to be her and every label started to create their own britneys. Thats why britney gets credit

Just like Christina Aguilera was the white answer to Monica, and The Backstreet Boyz and N*Sync were the white answers to Boyz II Men. Because whites are the majority in the US, the white artists will always get more promotion, more radio airplay, and eventually sell more records. This goes far back in the early years of Rock N Roll when Elvis was the white answer to virtually every black Rock N Roll musician. Still in 2021, nothing has changed.

@@keandrebell-washington9904 Do you honestly think this? 😂 C’mon... Brandy was never a pop artist. Sure, she had some huge crossover hits, but she’s an rnb artist through and through and completely in her own lane.
Britney always was and always will be pop. You cannot honestly put these two artists anywhere near each other.
If anything, Britney was heavily influenced by artists like Janet Jackson and Madonna. This is obvious because of how dance focussed most of her videos and performances were. She’s a dancer that sings. Brandy is a SINGER that moves.
Also, their music is NOTHING alike. Brandy had that Keith Crouch production sound on her first album. At the same time as Rahsaan Patterson, Tevin Campbell and Ray J did as well. It was kind of the start of that neo soul movement tbh.
Britney broke through later in the 90s with that huge Swedish pop sound that Max Martin pioneered. It’s easy to forget, but that sound was SO different when it first came out.
Both these legends deserve their props for different reasons. But saying that Britney was ‘a white version of Brandy’ is some foolishness.

I'm 35 and absolutely idolized Brandy as a young black teenager in the 90s/early 00s. She was undeniably a huge mainstream crossover success back in the day. For her to be so young, she truly did make history especially having Bwrbie dolls, a hit TV show, albums, films, first black Cinderella No.1 singles etc
It all happened so quickly though that I believe Brandy was likely completely burnt out by her 3rd album Full Moon and the cancelation of Moesha. Not to mention she got pregnant at 23 during her prime, was publically humiliated when it was discovered she lied about her marriage to protect her 'good girl' image, followed by a tragic car accident she was apart of that she resulted in a woman's death and a major lawsuit. Unfortunately by that time, RnB had koved on to new stars like Ashanti, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Rihanna, and of course, Beyonce.
Despite the setbacks however Brandy has continued to preservere in the last decade w/ several acting roles and two highly acclaimed albums in Two Eleven and B7. All of the newer generation RnB stars from Solange, Frank Ocean, HER, Jazmine Sullivan all credit her influence on their music.

I Love her Human album! It's pop, but I love it! That album, really let me know that Brandy could sing more than R&B. Then those unreleased tracks leaked back then, and I was like wow, I didn't know Brandy could do sll that! I didn't know Brandy did her own back grounds. I didn't know she could rap. I find out a lot about Brandy musically back in 2008. I love her already, but I didn't have the Afro album. So I got it, and was blown away! I went back to listened to all her albums! I was like wow, but girl got SKILLS! I am 42 now, and I still love me some Brandy!

I'm so in love with Brandy's music. She's definitely in my Top 5 for R&B singers. Often I wonder what I felt when hearing "Never Say Never" for the first time. I wish I would've caught on earlier but my teen years came later. All I know is I played that album on repeat into adulthood. I think even adult Brandy was underrated & under appreciated. For me 2/11 was her prime. But to be fair her voice had elevated so much when she came back with the "Full Moon" album. We know for a fact she was a blueprint for those white pop sensations at the time. Even today as far as vocals go people have copy catted the hell out of Brandy. II'm sure it's flattering to her. I'm grateful for her & her creations. Her journey & experiences has inspired & helped millions of people & I hope she never forgets that. She is timeless & legendary.

She was more marketable because she was white, that doesn’t diminish the hard work and limitless talent of Britney because she worked for her icon status but facts are facts. Brandy’s career literally became a blueprint for other singers. Endorsement deals, movies, tv show, Barbie…..like come on. I’m excited for this lol
