Ooooh Chip..
I went to see the first Stars Wars movie at an AMC theater for $1.75........in 1977!
Is that expensive in 1977?
Shrek5OnBlu-Ray Compared to what we paid in 1964 when I was a little kid to see movies. It was 50 cents for kids under 12 in '64. By 1977 I was in high school, so it seemed like a lot.
You too??
@@jiyzo Even now there are different prices for different showings. Discounts have long been available for seniors, matinees and recently loyalty programs.
Adjusted for inflation, that's $7.38
The best part about AMC is their Dolby Cinema/Atmos theatres. Those speaker systems are unreal!
The $15 a year for a Premiere membership is a steal compared to the $20 a MONTH for an A-Class Membership.
Cinemark has Dolby Atmos in some XD auditoriums I’m certain locations.

I prefer AMC over all others for these reasons: seat reservations, reclined seats, excellent picture, sound, and cleanliness.
agreed
Ehhh I mean I like AMC but there are other theaters that aren’t chains that are really nice.
I prefer Regal for one reason and one reason only, the fact that I can call the theatre and schedule an open captioned show, AMC will not do that so they lost business of deaf, autistic, and the people who like captions on the screen.
@@m4sk3dm4n i actually prefer regal because their more fancier theaters have 4DX which is basically a motion simulator cmplete with little immersive effects. makes the movie a real roller coaster. it makes tickets $30 a pop though but well worth it. i dont think AMC has such a theater.
Cinemark theatres are better.
I personally can't stand seat reservations, leather, or reclining seats this only makes people waaay more annoying.

David Rock You forgot the part where your parents never loved you and wish they went through with the abortion.
AMC bought the rundown Carmike in my town, didn’t remodel at all, and now call it “AMC Classic”. I saw Endgame there in a packed theater with no or barely working A/C, which really made you realize, while dripping in sweat, why they dubbed the theater “Classic”.
Wow, Carmike! It's been so long since I heard that name, mine became a FOX theater
I used to work at a carmike theater. AMC made it into an AMC classic. It was closed because they didn't want to fix the roof. I loved my job there and it was a historic theater in my town too.
There's 2 theatres in my area. One is the locally owned, more popular and preferred one. The other is AMC Classic 8, formerly Carmike. AMC isn't doing remodeling either. They just lowered the tickets to $5.99 every day and cut their showtimes to one 7pm on weeknights. The seats are still uncomfortable and non-stadium. Meanwhile the other theatre is slowly upgrading to better seats (even some recliners for smaller theatres) and it only takes them a couple of weeks to do that.
It may not seem like AMC has spent a lot of money upgrading the Carmikes they bought out, but believe me they have. I work at The AMC Classic Crawfordsville 8 and they spent a lot of money on getting the Freestyles installed, painting the building and most importently getting all "life and safety" aspects of the theatre up to code. This is something AMC is extremely concerend about. They are slowely upgrading other things, but it will take time. They took on a big project with the Carmikes.
My town had carmike till 2015-2016 then AMC bought carmike.
Its definitely that new pass that is going to help in the future sales and keeping AMC on top

I'm so sad. This is like a book I found in the library when I was in high school. The book was stashed in an old box and I saw a book of the twin towers and at the end of the book it said something like "the twin towers are meant to help america for years to come"

Very different where I live. I can't remember a time I've been in a theater and couldn't find a good seat. It's so foreign to me I wonder, what are the prime seats? Toward the front, the middle?

Nerd of Anarchy isn’t marcus mainly a Wisconsin thing?
I was surprised you didn't mention there theater branding tiers AMC, AMC Classic, and AMC Dine-in.
I mean, AMC Classic is just Carmike Cinemas.
AMC is a newly built AMC building, AMC Classic is a Carmike that was remodeled to the AMC brand, and Dine-In has much more options for the concessions, with food you would typically get a restaurants.
Over worked and under-payed staff is probably a big factor
JEM2895 That is 100% true.
Even with their lame self-service concessions setups they have in some locations I think I've seen like 7-8 employees in the building.. No way am I gonna pay $13-$15 per ticket to have to get my own stuff and still wait in line to shell out another $10 at the 1-man checkout for a soda and pack of Red Vines.
I know a guy who was making only $8 at AMC
atlys but they earn almost no money from ticket sales so the concessions need to be expensive
I'm working at and AMC right now. It sucks lol
No more AMC megaplexes in Canada, just Cineplex and Landmark.
Good riddance!
@@swallowedinthesea11I'm indifferent on this, on the one hand, the refurbishment of theatres has made them nicer, on the other hand, the formerly overpriced AMC theatres are now overpriced Empire and Cineplex theatres with arguably inferior loyalty programs.
Canada doesn’t know how to run companies so I’m not surprised
Fuck Canada
@@aaronlimitless when Wanda Group bought out AMC they decided to sell off the Canadian locations. Not because they were not profitable, but because they wanted to focus on the US market. AMC came to Canada in the early 2000's I believe (perhaps the late 1990's - not entirely sure) so they were never a big player in the Canadian market. In 2012 they sold 4 locations to Cineplex (biggest theatre chain in Canada), 2 to Empire (owned by the grocery store chain Sobey's, and they later sold their theatres off to Cineplex and Landmark), and 2 were closed.
So it wasn't an issue of Canada not being able to run a company. We are a smaller market and given AMC was not expanding here it just made financial sense. I've been going to the Whitby location since it opened and Empire said it was their most profitable location when they acquired it. It was original an AMC 24, so it was double the size of the closest Cineplex. Landmark took it over and they upgraded 23 of the theatres to reclining seats, the lone IMAX theatre now has better rocker seats (I haven't been to an IMAX movie since the change as I prefer the recliners). They also brought in Coke Freestyle machines. Kind of a rarity really in these parts. I will say their concession offerings suck. Hot dogs, soft pretzels, pretzel bites and a pretzel wrapped dog are the hot items outside of popcorn.
They are currently in the process of renovating the interior or at least the main lobby area. Going to feel strange when that is done.
Most amusing thing dating back to when it was the AMC 24 was the carpet between guest services and the concession stands actually had a giant swastika. It stayed like that for years.
My biggest complaint dating back to the AMC days was they were so damn slow to refill the flavour powder machine. Eventually they just chained plastic shakes to the garbage cans, but those were go empty quickly. Empire and Landmark charge for tiny packets of flavouring, so I always just brought my own from the store.
I have an AMC Theater at my local mall. Several years ago, they built a brand new bigger state of the art theater on the front side of the mall, moving out of the old location in the back. The mall with the theater had opened in 1985.
My local mall has an AMC but the AMC is an awful run down dump that should be condemned for being a health hazard
AMC closed down one of my town's historic theaters I worked at because they didn't want to fix the roof damage accumulated over the years. I hate amc.
Id like to see a video of AMC’s current status, during the covid era
AMC was my movie theater growing up, so I am a HUGE AMC fan still... 😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍
My local AMC, which I’ve been going to for 16 years, renovated half the building while showing movies in the other half, then just shuttered the un-renovated half, simply walling off that half of the theatre and dropping 13 screens.
But tbh, the improvements sold me on getting A-List and I watched more movies in theatre in the last half of last year than probably the two prior years combined.
That sounds like AMC Covina
Joseph Eggers This I’m in PHX AZ.
@@Eggman012 Exactly what I was thinking! That's AMC covina alright I go there too.
My local AMC did something similar. They left both sections open, but closed three screens in each. Went from 24 to 18 screens. Staff told me it was too expensive to maintain so many screens. The screens are still there, but they removed all the seats and projectors.
Except where I live there is no AMC theaters within 4 hours. On the other hand There is 5 Cinemarks Within a 1 hour distance.
Here, it's Regal.
Here its mostly Pathé
opposite for me. Only competition is UA/Regal that costs more and is worst than one AMC but better than the other amc. Further from me. In a worst area tho.
Same with me in Michigan with MJR
Where I live, the market is dominated by Marcus. There’s two AMC’s near me, but the rest are Marcus.
Haha I'm 40. I remember putting my soda on the floor seeing Goonies in a theatre in Virginia.
Oh yeah, had Carmel Cremes too 😂
Streaming is great, but the movie going experience is just overall my preferred way to watch releases im excited about. AMC knows that if they want to keep pushing ahead, that making that experience of going to a theater the best it can be is they key to growing and keeping doors open. Although, i go to Alamo and other full-dine establishments that are a little more niche, AMC is on its way to making that experience mainstream.

One of the things keeping the theatre business going is that now that most of them use digital projection instead of film, they can do special one-night shows and the like. You should consider covering Fathom Events some time in the future.

We come to this place for magic. We come to AMC theatres to love, to cry, to care. Because we need that, all of us. That indescribable feeling you get when the lights begin to dim. Don't forget AMC's chain-wide sound system upgrades. They switched to Dolby-licensed & tested speaker systems, including bi-amped & tri-amped mains plus self-amped subwoofers. 'Blade Runner 2049' sounded totally awesome in every theater I saw it in (AMC 16 1000 Van Ness in San Francisco), plus $5 'Stubs' Tuesday pricing made it a slam dunk for me!

The movie theater, which I literally was in 2 hours ago for endgame, is Galaxy Theaters
I moved to a different theater just because one had those recliners. They are fantastic. It works ,I go to the movies more now because of the seats.
They’ve ALWAYS had a focus on what they used to refer to as “sight and sound”. They also had a philosophy about concessions- if they’re gonna charge those high prices they’d better offer quality food options.
oddly enough, AMC is the cheapest theater in my area. they bought a Carmike Cinema, turned it into an AMC, and show new movies for $5. It's not as nice as the Regal Cinema or a typical AMC, but you really can't beat it for the price. Of course I went to a more expensive theater to see Endgame, but for the average movie experience, it does the job.

Joker Here they’re 10.49 per adult ticket, and that’s just for the standard ticket with no reclining seats. on Tuesdays there’s $5 tickets and the prices always depend on what time you go, the later you go, the more it’ll cost you
AMC movie pass subscription allowed me to see End Game in 3D Imax ($25 ticket) and use free $5 vouchers (based on a point system). I think it's fair to say millions of movie tickets and millions of popcorn orders and millions of sodas were sold because they were pretty much free for the $20 monthly AMC movie pass. The pass now costs $23.99 in California but a regular AMC here costs about $14.95 for a standard ticket. I think I "spent" $450 at AMC but I have only bought $60 worth of monthly passes.

Next time you go see a movie, please be thoughtful and dont leave your trash on the floor or in your seat, it helps the staff more than you know
Bert Paredes was a senior sight and sound engineer for over 35 years. He was also an ambassador that would pick out hot locations. He would also over see the construction of new buildings and renovations. He has worked with many high profile Hollywood executives and actors. @@rover18ca Not all; there was an AMC at the Interchange Plaza (HWY 7 and Interchange Way; near Woodbridge, ON), probably opened in the late-90s. It closed about 10 years later I think, and the site's been abandoned since.

Had a couple in Toronto. Not sure if they're still around.
My man and I use to only watch movies every few months. After our local theater remodeled we started going almost every week because those recliners are so nice 😂
They’ve also cut the night crew for a lot of the AMC Classics (former Carmike Cinemas theaters), so instead of paying for a third party to come in, the employees clean the building.

As a Latvian, I was a bit shocked when you said AMC is big in Latvia, since I haven't seen any AMC theatres here. Maybe they just hold the rights to our movie theatres or maybe own some of our movie theatres. Anyway, great video!
The introduction of reserve seating and incline chairs was crazy for me. I viewed the theater experience as a hassle when I was younger. Having to get there early, long lines, saving seats, and competing with people getting 'free' seats. Then ending up with the neck breaking seats at the front.
As i got older I noticed a big decline in move goers even after AMC converted our Lowes. I thought, they're just going to go out of business with this audience. Using the enhanced seating arrangements was a great move to combat this. Instead of stuffing the screens to max capacity make it a quality experience instead, especially since the seats weren't filled anyway.
The Alist membership made me go from a 1-3 movies a year to a 2-3 movies a month person. I'm a sucker for movie flavored popcorn. It's still expensive with the free upgrade, but nothing compares to that flavor and butter. I always sneak in my water bottle though lol. In the end they are getting more money from me, but I am having a much better experience now.
This video made me curious how big Cobb Theatres is, since it's my local cinema and the one I go to most often. And then I found out they actually only have 19 locations in total, primarily focused in the south, and my entire worldview has been shaken because I assumed they were nationwide help.
HAHAH really?! I assumed that too! I live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and that was our local cinema until a couple months ago, when it was bought by CMX.
I Must Have Popcorn For This

One innovation you forgot to mention is that in 1995, they invented Stadium Seating, which is the standard for theaters now. The recliner conversion were wisely done with their non stadium theaters, and their business went from squat to booming. They are slowly doing this to their stadium seaters too, but only the low volume ones. Also a big factor is their sound system. In the mid 90s were most theaters were equipped with DTS or SDDS sound, AMC still stuck with the Dolby Sound mixer, which was still the standard. Yes DTS and SDDS were great for their time, but Dolby responded with Dolby Digital and Dolby 5.1. By the late 90s, Dolby 5.1 was leading the way while SDDS and DTS faded, forcing the competitors to change their system, which was costly. Now, Dolby Atmos is the ultimate in Sound Quality, and their Dolby Theater usually do the most business, as they sell out first, yes, even more popular than the IMAX theaters.
I've never heard of AMC. I live in Wisconsin, and the only chain we have is Marcus Theatres. Also, my ticket for Endgame was only $6.60... yup. Also, in my town, we have a local movie theatre with one screen called the Rivoli. Their tickets are half that, maybe even less, but they show movies that are out of the chains (a month or so after they've been released) so it makes sense. Anyway, this was still interesting to see.
I love how theaters are getting more premium. It feels odd now to not go to a theater with assigned reclining seats.

GLMR KILZ I was a server for the a dine in location... it was hell , lol 😂 at least we got those free movies!
Yea, freakin Endgame was soooo packed! Hated but made the day go by faster.
Thank God I only work in the morning/noon
Miss Ace yea one time every other server called out because there was a hurricane so I was the only server in the WHOLE BUILDING!!! I literally cried in front of so many costumers that day haha 😆
Wiener Blow tons I am so sorry :(. I would’ve fought all of the other servers!
I signed up for the Stubs A-List in March because I realized if I see around 2 movies a month it pays for itself
Yeah, I love it. It allows me to see films I'm curious to see, but normally wouldn't want to pay full ticket price for.
Same here, also I’ve used it to rewatch movies. Like I saw Avengers Endgame twice just because there’s so much going on I wanted to make sure I caught everything
I’ve used it a lot. Seeing Hellboy in IMAX and only having to waste the time on it was nice. And getting super nice seats for Endgame was amazing
With Netflix and streaming services, and new movie releases time to digital, more people might be willing to wait till they're available for digital purchase. That might work against AMC and any other big theater. It might already have esp with covid but that's my take on one thing that could hurt their revenue.
I tend to see your videos and it was a nice surprise that you use my photo on 4:29 :)
And I look at your videos on the same device, and still have the same view on the window.
In my hometown AMC is popular because it's the only theater located on the better side of town where you don't have to worry about getting shot or fought by thugs.
I sneak food like Taco Bell in to theatres like a madman
I get my snacks from a dollar store and hide it in my sister's purse. XD
I put a burrito, soda and candy in my purse. It's so full I have my boyfriend show my Id for our Alist passses. So worth it
BlackRaveBow I miss Taco Bell so much!!!
Why Taco Bell? So you can crap your pants during the movie ?
My cousin one time brought an entire thing of Caprisun to a theater and no one said anything
I just went to watch Endgame in IMAX three days in a row at AMC theaters and bought nachos and a red icee all 3 times. Best movie experience of all time. 🔥
Blue icee is better, LOL!
Nerd of Anarchy nah bro wth 😂
What they need is a purple icee
AAR you fuckin loser
you need to get laid fast
A List is a reason by far. My favorite subscription service.
not only adding beer options, but an entire bar in MacGuffin's bar is a game changer for me. Having a choice of beer, wine, cocktails or just neat pours of liquor while enjoying my movie makes me feel at home, while experiencing the massive speakers and hd picture screens
this didn't age well...
I concur oppositely 😂
Your comment didn’t age well
💎👋
Yeah I remember when the Carmike Cinema I used to go turned into an AMC Theater
You even included my local AMC in your video. Thamks
As a manager from an independent theater, AMC A-List is easily the best deal for frequent moviegoers. Movie Pass has terrible customer service, gets showtimes wrong, doesn't ship the cards in time, and probably isn't going to last the year anyway. I'm not a fan of AMC, but if you're looking for the cheapest way to watch a ton of movies, theirs is best. That said, independent theaters often have great offers and a nice sense of community and personality.
Bigger than you know. Unilever.
I'm AMC A-Lister And I Love It...
Dame here, I've seen more movies with A-List in the past 12 months, than I have gor the past 10 years. I'm actually at AMC right now about to see Detective Pikachu.☺
@@undrtakr900 it's A Funny Movie
Mr24freak David lucky wish I had it
@@donkeykong4983 you Can get, Everybody can.. All You Need is A debit or A Credit card and Pay 19.95 per Month and You Can watch 3 movies Every Week.. Any Format..
Most of the reasoning you listed for their more recent success makes a lot of sense. I used to go to a lot of the Cinemark theaters when I was younger due to there being no real difference between the two except for distance from me. Now I exclusively watch every movie at AMC theaters, I'm a part of their A-list, which honestly pays for itself even if you don't see 3 movies every week.
Their Dolby theaters are also the bomb, I will never get over that sound quality.
This really useful. Studying film distribution at the moment
One thing that's ignored is how effective they are at utilizing their larger number of screens compared to many competitors. Growing up near their headquarters it wasn't uncommon for their local 20 screen suburban theater to screen a lot of smaller, independent, and foreign films that would normally require a trip downtown to the art theater. Nothing too obscure, mainly larger limited releases. Now living in an area with a very large Chinese population it's not uncommon to see major Chinese films showing at AMC. Especially things like big releases around the Lunar New Year. They also tend to show a good number of Indian-produced films to capture that audience. Other local theaters might do special events through Fathom Events, but AMC schedules this on their own. It won't ever form a backbone of their offerings, but they're taking greater advantage of their smaller theaters to increase the variety of what they show and keep audiences that would otherwise go to specialty theaters.
You’re not my friend if you haven’t sneaked something into amc
Cool
I worked at a movie theater back in high school, and the manager came up with an ingenious way to stop people sneaking stuff into the theater. Anything we, as staff, confiscated from guests became ours. Seeing as we were all 16-18 years old, the amount of alcohol successfully snuck into that building dropped to zero overnight.
Good video! AMC sounds like it has quite the history.
That's some great information thanks
Damm I didn't even know that I had been going to AMC theaters whole my life.
Well this aged well for 2020.
Will Smith I’ll say.
Aged better for 2021 🚀🚀🚀🚀
I discovered certain AMCs had full recliners ( almost flat ) that were made with good cushioning. Top that off that I could reserve our seats. I quit waiting for an interesting movie to arrive on DVD. I semi- regularly picked up gift cards at Sam's /Costco and bought $50 worth of AMC credit for $40. If the movie is boring, you take a cat nap. Brilliant business decision to lure folks out of their homes. I dont see movies unless I get a full recliner. Love this channel. Peace.
I used to hate A-List because they had their own priority lanes at the snack bar. Now that I'm an A-List member, I love those priority lanes. I never saw a movie more than once in the theater before joining. Now, I've seen a few movies multiple times and they get me for $14 for a soda and popcorn every time.
Pleasssseee do a Regal Cinemas video next lol.
I tried to book a seat at AMC yesterday and there was no available seats, they have pretty much Lazyboy seats and really good screens. I went to Regal and it was a ghost town yesterday, was the only 2. The seats are pretty trash and the screen was ok. All Regals I have been to are similar to this.
@@sp1nks248 samee here in NYC. Everyone prefers AMC with the $5 Tuesdays and the MUCH better seats and screens. It's not even close here lol
I hate Regal with a passion. The theater I live next to and used a lot was a Warren Theatre. I liked it a lot because it was a classy place(like employees wearing tux suits and the whole place looking like it belongs in the 20s) and because the theaters themselves were always nice and clean. Regal bought them out and ever since then the place has been going to shit, the theaters aren't nearly as clean as they used to be, they got rid of the tuxes for shitty looking fast food type uniforms, and they started playing TV ads before the movie starts as if you're $11 dollars wasn't enough for their pockets.
Fuck Regal, I wish AMC built a theater as close to my house as the Warren so it wouldn't feel like I'm forced to go give Regal my money just to see a movie.
I went to a Regal theater for the first time in years over the weekend to watch Endgame since my local Cinemark was already out of good seats. All round trash theater with terribly uncomfortable seats
@@sp1nks248 the ones near me have reclining seats with a mini table attached to the seats, and the screen was pretty big
My AMC @ Katy Mills (Texas) that I've been going to since 07 was getting pretty dated, so I think a year or two they decided to renovate it and I must say it's now my go-to theater.
I got my AMC Premiere Club rewards (pay $10/Year) and essentially I never pay for online ticketing fees (all theaters now have like Alamo/Regal/Cinemark), get Tuesday Savings as usual, and save on concessions by getting free size upgrades.
AMC is succeeding because they're listening to consumers and improving the movie theater experience, even if it means with fixing the little things (rewards systems, seat recliners, etc..).
I swear, it smells like they mop the floors with butter in that place. You walk into an AMC, and the scent of butter just slaps you in the face. ...but it smells so good!
I have AMC Stubs A-List, I love that I can just decide to see a movie, buy the ticket on my phone, go in and see it and not even have to think about the price of the ticket.
