  • Fresh off his second-place run at the NASCAR All-Star Race, Denny Hamlin joined The Dale Jr. Download and shares his disappointment in the controversial yellow flag and Ryan Blaney's window net issue. Plus, did his post race comments and use of the "F" word get him in hot water? Denny also explains what he thinks about the All Star Race as a whole and how the event, and other aspects of the sport, have become diluted.

      Me too. If NASCAR was going to break a rule for safety then do it right. Some how Ryan got the net to stay up and use 2 hands to drive but it was not safe in an accident. In my sons dirt car it’s my job to latch the net. He might be able to do it with is belts off or loosened.

      I know that it's not a popular opinion, but I would rather listen to an after-race interview with Hamlin or Keslowski (sp), after they didn't win...or get knocked out of the race due to an accident)...than listen to everyone's favorite driver, Kyle Busch......I respect Busch's ability to drive a racecar. I will not deny that he is one of the best. But once he's outside of the car....🤪🤪

      Denny is becoming that guy that nobody likes on the track, but you appreciate what he does for the sport and teams by being so outspoken. With all the veterans that have retired over the last five years, he's clearly becoming the leader veteran presence. It kind of shocks me a bit, because Kevin Harvick of all people has become so quiet. I figured he would be the one to assume that role. Kyle Busch just seems so immature. So I don't see him taking that role over. It kind of scares me in a way, because when Hamlin hangs it up, who will be that next guy?

No Blaney who should have clearly knew the race wasn't over yet, decided to pull it down. Just because they called a questionable yellow doesn't mean Blaney or any other driver can go out and break any rule they want. If a a questionable yellow (or any yellow) came out at any other point in the race and a driver dropped their netting they would be required to come in and fix it and lose their spot. This situation is absolutely no different. Blaney not being aware of something he clearly should have been and making a mistake is not justification.

      They threw a bogus caution flag 2 seconds before Blaney crossed the line for checkered.
      He also didn't "break" any rule. Nascar allowed him to restart the race and finish the added laps of a GWC. It would have been "breaking an rule" had they told him he had to come in (black flagged). He resumed the GWC to finish because Nascar said it was OK.
      Nascar obviously deemed that the right thing to do was allow him to finish the race because of the bogus caution paired with the fact that Blaney took the checkered flag basically at the same time they threw the bogus caution.
      "A questionable caution at any other point in the race and driver drops their netting" What ??

Look at the wreck earlier with Kyle Busch, Chastain, and Chase Elliott. I agree with Denny, a safety rule regarding racing without a window net properly attached is clear black and white. That said NASCAR shouldn’t have put Blaney in that position. Many people( not everyone) grew up with the phrase “ 2 wrongs don’t make a right” in which that’s what NASCAR tried. We saw Chastain launching off the Toyota of Kyle Busch like it was a scene out of Dukes of Hazard. If you’re gonna bend the rules, don’t put a drivers life in danger by letting him race with compromised equipment. Bend the rule by putting the order letting any the cars go to pit lane in the order of caution to fixed the compromised equipment no positions lost but crucially no positions gained either.

    NASCAR proved in the All-Star race three things:
    1- It has no problem lying to its fans. (window net was clearly not correctly put back up).
    2- It has no problem jeopardizing the lives of drivers for a good finish (risked Blaney's safety to save face about the window).
    3- They proved their leadership is unintelligent (because they could have let Blaney pit, put the net up, and re-take his spot achieving the same exciting finish, and 95% of fans would have been OK with that since it's an all-star race where regular rules are thrown out the window anyway, and also because by NASCAR throwing the yellow 100 yards before he took the checkered, he legit may not have been able to know the yellow occurred from his vantage point).
    This sport could be so great, but since about 2002, it's been a clown show due to terrible leadership.

    I agree, whoever made the decision to race, should at the very least be put in a different job or position, that don't require safety related calls. This should not be a judgement call, it's there design and they knew that the window net could not be put up by the driver. I think a suspension and fine should be implemented here to the person (I would bet it was more than one person involved). The "Powers to be" don't hesitate to fine teams for a lot less safety related issues, like wheel lugs after a race. It appears to be a double standard going on. With this new car they have already issued some pretty serious fines involved with performance related modifications. I think this fine should be right up there with the top tier fines. What happens next time if this issue comes up? It's obvious they realized they threw the yellow for a "WRECK" way to quick, did Stenhouse actually brush the wall or was that just dust?

      "Rules" should NOT apply when the rule maker caused the circumstance in the first place by throwing a bogus caution flag 2 seconds before the finish line checkered flag.
      They screwed up and unfairly caused Blaney's issues...Even Hamlin admitted he deserved the win.
      So if it is REALLY about "safety"....Since Nascar screwed up with a bogus caution flag that also would not have restarted any other race on the schedule but this one,...They should have simply allowed the man to come in and get the window net up and re-start from the front...
      This still even gives Hamlin an undeserved second chance at Ryan Blaney.

    • @jayss10
      @jayss10 Před 2 lety +1

      Absolutely matters. In short some of these accidents are super violent and exceed 10 Gs. At that point a person just “Blacks out” and whatever isn’t secured (like their arms) goes flying everywhere including out of the side, top, and front of the car. Arm straps have been required with dirt midget cars, sprint cars, silver crown cars and more for decades. Arm straps in open wheel cars are basically the equivalent of a window net in closed cockpit cars.

  • @Dream25_
    @Dream25_ Před 2 lety

    Absolutely 100% we shouldn't even be having this conversation because there shouldn't have been a caution, but Denny also makes a couple damn good points here. I personally do not see any reason they couldn't have had him pull to the end of pit road and an official help him get the net back up, I really don't think anyone would have been upset over that, especially becuase like Denny said, they're about to GWC for a Million f***ing dollars dude, the window net needs to be up.
    The best thing Nascar can do it 100% own BOTH of their mistakes but I really don't see that happening.
