      When I was obtaining a degree in electrical engineering back in the mid 1960s, pocket calculators didn't exist. My Post slide rule effectively added log2 and log3 to get log6, accurate to about three digits if you hadn't dropped it beforehand and you had good eyesight. Today, what professor or boss in their right mind would ever say, "No, we don't use calculators here, only pencil and paper or your slide rule if your dog hasn't chewed it up."

    Well explained for those who need to know how to simplify log equations. Of course, when these are embedded in much larger or more complex equations we may prefer to keep the the simplified logs until the very end rather than approximate values too early. Great explanation as I said.

    Once the calculation has reached the point of X log 6 = 18 the whole process can be greatly simplified for the sake of instruction efficiency. Students need to be taught simplification to reduce chance of error and time spent during exams.
    X log 6 = 18 = 6 * 3
    X log 6 = log 6 + log 3 Note: multiplication of two numbers m and n is addition of the log form; log(m) + log(n)
    X = (log 6/log 6) + (log 3 / log 6)
    Note: {log 6 = log 2 + log 3 = 0.3010 + 0.4771 = 0.7782} but no need to calculate log 6 in terms of log 2 and log 3
    X = 1 + (0.4771 / 0.7782) = 1 + 0.6131 = 1.6131

      It fits a more standard solution method to break the 18 into 6 * 3 first. Then (log 6/ log 6) + (log 3/log 6) will evaluate to 1 + (log 3/log 6). Either way the log values are found with a table or calculator.
