    This video does not flow perfectly, mainly because of the music videos are cut out and no questions are asked. The quality isn't so nice so I sized it down to make it more watchable.
    The MTV Dire Straits Special includes;
    - Interviews with MK, J. Illsley, P. Franklin, C. Whitten
    - Rehearsals of the OES tour

    I once asked Phonogram for the original tape, which hopefully had the full version of Planet of New Orleans on it, but nope... it had almost the same cut. It's definately not out there somewhere :(

    And in the 20/20 vision of hindsight, the On Every Street tour was actually not a happy or enjoyable one for most of the band, and they were all very glad when it was finally over, although they perhaps had more optimistic perceptions of things before the tour began, as suggested by the tone of John Illsley's comments in this clip.
    But in reality, both the album and the tour were major disappointments in terms of sales and interest, and perhaps neither should have happened at all, looking back.
    Instead, perhaps an EP release containing only 'Calling Elvis', 'On Every Street', 'The Bug', and 'Heavy Fuel', with no tour, likely would have been a far better arrangement and quality of presentation.
    Some five or six years after the extraordinarily successful 'Brothers In Arms' album, Knopfler was clearly interested in doing other things, and none of those things had anything to do with Dire Straits, musically or otherwise.
    In comparison, most of Mark Knopfler's solo work has been largely forgettable, and nowhere near as interesting as the Dire Straits material he will always be most known for, much to his personal disappointment, I am sure.

      So many stars insist on going solo and maybe hope everyone is gonna say how great they are. (Sting. Paul Weller etc) The truth is that most of them are never as good as the band's they came from.

    • @bradgoose
      @bradgoose Před 3 lety +1

      I sit here and find myself in agreement with most of that.
      I feel a little disappointed for the core Dire Straits guys because Mark clearly was Dire Straits and once he wanted to do something else that essentially meant the end of that particular journey for those guys.
      I enjoy some of Marks solo work but I equally enjoy a lot of the Dire Straits stuff. It was the music he created through Dire Straits that put him on his long and successful path and it’s sad to hear him talk down about it in some interviews that I have watched.
      Maybe he feels that the early stuff wasn’t technical enough or too poppy, certainly compared to some of his current music. However, I guess we all change over time and one thing you can’t say about Knopfler is that he hasn’t kept things fresh.

      The album was successful on the charts and in sales. It lacks the cohesion and stature of the 1985 DS smash, yes, and it should have swapped the frumpy cuts in favour of the excellent B-side throwaways of the singles. Knopfler made the mistake of warming up and mellowing down artistically when DS should have played it cooler, sharper, and cynical to fit with the times. The lyrics come across too as half-hearted and even lazy.

      Well the tour sold out everywhere with some really crazy big venues. I would not call that a dissapointment. You're missing Planet Of new Orleans which is S-tier Dire Straits or You And Your friend. Indeed, I find OES way more interesting than the BIA album

      @annetteturner5972 Před rokem +1

      I don't think MK is "dissatisfied" with his post DS career. He is playing the music he wants to and why shouldn't he.
