In a 45-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Arun Shourie, who is also a former editor of the Indian Express and a highly regarded and prolific author, says that the recent comments made by the Law Minister, about judges and the Supreme Court collegium, and by the Vice President, about the primacy and supremacy of parliament over the constitution, do not simply reflect the difference of opinion over how judges are chosen but constitute “a concerted attack on the judiciary” which is “deliberate and well-thought through”. Mr. Shourie says this is not just an attack on judges but an attempt “to denigrate” the Supreme Court, a fundamental and critical part of our constitution. He says the aim is to lower the image and standing of the Supreme Court in the eyes of the Indian people.

Karan, it's been roughly 3 years since I started to listen to your interviews. I rarely comment, but I listen to you and the guest with utmost focus, but today I want to comment, to commend and appreciate the efforts you put in these interviews, your interviews are always fun and exiting yet they full of insight, courage and wisdom of unaccountable magnitude. As I have in the past years started to watch your interviews I have learned many things, my mental horizon has expanded manifold and my admiration for your journalism and your style of interviews has grown. Karan you are my grandfather's age, I am student of class 12th but I love that i can still call you karan. Just wanted to tell you, that your interviews have really helped me become more mature and aware of my surroundings. Never stop, keep going. Your interviews will not only educate the present but will serve as a template for many generations to come. A template of courageous journalism, of forthrightness and boldness and most importantly of guarding indian democracy. But karan, If you are reading this always remember you have a huge responsibility on your shoulders, a responsibility of accountability, a responsibility of being truthful, a responsibility of being fair and above all a responsibility of always getting truth to your listeners. Because for me karan thapar is not merely a name, it's a hallmark, I dont know, i may be wrong, but it's your duty karan to prove me and all your listeners right. Keep going my boy, today its modi, tomorrow it may be someone else, but karan thapar should always be the same.

Wonderful interview by Karan Tapa on the current relevant and dynamic topics: Judiciary, Executive and Legislature and their separate functions, and how in our day, the Legislature and Executive are trying to over-step, and how the Judiciary is failing to assert its rightful role.
Arun shourie, as always, being open, outspoken, articulate, does not mince matters, when it comes to calling spade a spade. He hit the nail on the heads of those responsible in the judiciary as well as the banks, who practice double standards, favouring the rich and discriminating the poor.
Karan's interviews, with outstanding, enlightened, and highly educated, and those with vast experience in different walks of life, have immense value for learning, not from books, but from the living legends and geniuses. The credit for this goes entirely to Karan alone.

Thanks to the Wire and Arun Shourie for the super interview. Arun shourie is a rare intellectual and one of the main stalwarts of the EX PM Vajpayeeji Team. Vajpayeeji and his team had the interests of the country on the whole in what ever circumstances in utter constrast tothe present day Regime. In the present day the value and sense of Patriotism is completely lost and the rich get richer while the down trodden get a raw deal. And the reason for all this is nothing but money, in fact it is quid pro quo policy system being run now in the country. Thats the reason why all the Ex BJP great stalwarts like Arun Shourie, Yashwant Sindha, Joshi, Jaswant Singh, who are all greats in their own way, had been shown the door and kept outof politics by the present day Regime. This is the democracy of the land in the present day. The need of the hour is a great leader who has the interest of the country foremost. First of all what has to be done is ban the use of EVM machines, and the Chief Election Commission should be controlled by the supreme Court. Jai Hind !

This is such a great idea. This is our dream as janta of India. It will be a happy dream come true in a country where a lot of common people understand justice is not to be expected. What a wonder it would be if…If judiciary can grow a pair and speak up for our constitution. If it could demonstrate activism in such dark times. If judiciary can stop its own degeneration that has been happening for years might have sped up in recent years. I hope justice system stands for our nation’s democracy, equality, fairness and independence and people can finally see that this country was founded upon rational thinking and not unfair, emotionally hightened speeches. Also, judiciary finds a way to speed up the justice trials and the process between charges and submission of forged evidences. Mind you, Judiciary in India didn’t have a great image among comon folks in India before current government crisis. For example a normal divorce case takes years and costs a victim so much money to ensure a fair settlement. People in this country had ultimate frustration with police and law system which was exploited during the campaign of the current government.
The hunger for faster judgements is what fuelled this swift judgment era, even if it’s wrong. People see active intervention happening in the name of justice. Unfortunately, the deep rooted lack of reforming the judiciary at the same speed or scale as the country’s population or corruption is what has led to these war times for the judiciary. And it is indeed a war. If our judiciary still doesn’t wake up and speak up, show non discriminatory attitude and active resistance against internal corruption, it will be a landslide of everything we hold dear in this nation. I hope all judges and everyone associated with this profession speaks up. You can’t just be intelligent and be silent at the face of totalitarianism, when people are misled, misinformed, being brainwashed and subjugated. Your silence might ascertains non interference of opinion in the society in other times. Times when the public is fully prepared to be a citizen again instead of a “praja”.

A very good Interview, no doubt. I watch this program often. But, this interview could have been a lot better if Mr Arun Shourie Ji was allowed more space and a chance to speak. We love to listen to Mr Shourie Ji's point of view, interesting anecdotes, sharing of his own experience, and precious words of wisdom! What I felt today was that Mr Thapar was saying a lot more than a great Interviewer should, using long sentences, interrupting often, and perhaps seeking approval/endorsement of his statements from Arun Shourie Ji! No offence meant at all. I have great admiration, regard, and respect for both these learned gentlemen!

Karan another excellent interview and I fully agree with you and Arun. Having said that, I would also like to point out that, if today the Judiciary is feeling slighted, it could be a result of the weakness of self preservation of a few, who may have leaned in favour of the govt. Pre retirement judgments for post retirement benefits. Otherwise, such comments on judiciary could not have been made with such ease and nonchalance.

what an insight discussion. Going through the discourse of the interview, it has shown us the right direction to find the epicenter of the new normal term "India's Democracy at risk". Keep up the good work Sir. My highest respect to you. Love you from Manipur, a land of pro Modi's style of governance @totalitarian, majoritarian and autocratic way of governing, and where giving critical comments on the state governance via social medias ,such as facebook, means getting yourself a direct ticket to JAIL.
