The best? Just your _opinion, you mean._ I’m not saying Baker and Norman weren’t wonderful in this role, I’m saying Baker and Norman aren’t the only women who sang this aria. And I have no idea where the climactic “-member me” syllables go, but they are totally out of line with the voice she uses “before traversing the passagio”, as my voice teacher used to say. Mush vowels. Yuck.

performance is great, of course; but it feels really awkward how the singers of the choir are reading the score, as if they are checking for wrong notes being sung, or as hearing the piece the first time in their life (which isn't so). When interested in the score, study it at home or during rehearsal, but not during performance.

This was fine until….the most difficult parts of the aria, the illusive, high, “re-MEMBER ME” vowels at the end….what happened?? Everything changed in her vowels, just as so many singers’ do! The Achilles heel, bc if you don’t get those right (for some people; I seem to be in the minority here), then the earlier, beautifully sung part….which isn’t difficult to sing….isn’t enough. For me, anyway.
