I love how Sabian didn't let this become a fluffy "Man all of these cymbals are perfect and awesome" piece. They let everyone interested in the cymbals know that it's all based on personal opinion and that not all of their cymbals will appeal to everyone. I love that!
Oh, Neil Peart. What a gem he really was. R.I.P
I love Mike's reaction to Dave saying that his playing was great. Very sincere.
0:30 - Dave says to portnoy "great playing man" and portnoy is thinking "I dont want them to see me cry " :'(
I was thinking that too. Seeing Portnoy's response to Weckl's praise is probably one of the finest things I have seen on CZcams.
@@Summervibes12-t5z yes I’ll bet weckl watching portnoy with DT fried weckl out. Dave prolly thought like dude Mike’s insanely good.
@@carlreynolds1111 lol you obviously dont know weckl. Nothing against DT but drums in DT sounds basic to weckls music
@@elmolebumfacil2307 exactly. And that’s not to say Portnoy isn’t a great drummer, it’s just that Dave is a master of the instrument.
I guarantee you both of them can't play some parts of their music. Weckl can't play metal at this point, MP can't do proper jazz.
Props to Sabian for actually including the artists' unfavorable critiques towards the cymbals as well as the good. That's some honesty that you won't see in many companies. And it's only right; different players will want different sounds.
Imagine the lesson you could get from these gentlemen.
Oh god... I would faint if I suddenly walked in that room with all those legends...
Neil Peart to Mike Portnoy: No more coffee for you!!! LOL!
MrDrums76 translating: “no more coke for you” lol
what a moment in drumming history! and bozzio cracking up, gold right here
Weckl "you have 65000 cymbals on your set"...priceless! 1:34
Trib haha I thought Mike said that? Weckl wow the humor lol and the respect, just amazing. If buddy rich was there neil and mike might get some really wicked witty remarks from him hahaha!!!
+alencore yeah buddy rich was a bit of a prick in all honesty.
I love how naturally these guys gel when talking about drums/cymbals and whatnot, the stadium ride joke and how they make fun of Bozzio, it all seems natural and not staged. I'd love to see a friendly drum off between these 5, it's surely going to be intense.
5 gods in 1 room
DAMN
screw the dream theater career, when Dave Weckl says 'great playing,' you know you've made it.
Playing in front of Dave Weckl...no pressure...
By far my favorite thing on this channel is hearing all of these great artists give the truth about the cymbals. There is no cutting out the bad stuff it is what I need to hear. So I will be buying some of these soon.
"What are you talking about? You have 65,000 cymbals on your set."
"Yeah but-"
"None of which sounds like a cymbal"
Made my day XD
Dave Weckl: Great playing! Portnoy´s reaction 0:31 :D
How is this the first time I’ve seen this? Some of the best drummers all together talking drums
When Weckl said, "Great playing." to Portnoy. It had the same undertone of when an 8 year old goes to one of his clinics and plays a basic rock beat. "Nice job."
yikesssss
LOL brutal!
Conclusions:
EVERYONE PLAYS THEIR OWN MUSIC WITH THEIR OWN STYLE... THERE'S NO BETTER OR WORST PLAYER... EVERYONE DESERVES RESPECT FOR WHAT THEY DO IN MUSIC... EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT THEY DO...
you have right !!
So true!
one hundred years of art and wisdom in one room
So cool to see those guy’s hanging out talkin shop! The High Priest’s of Drumming! It’s like being in the presence of Gods!
hahahah the expression on mikes face after dave says "great playing" is priceless....he had that "yeah yeah dave...it's just getting uncomfortable now...you've played with chick" kind of gesture happening there for a second
Thank you Sabian what an unbelievable setting those guys in one room talking cymbals. Hi Mark Love :)
All these great drummers
ive met portnoy a couple times and his face will turn red if you tell him how much you like his playing,im not lying dude will blush! and how can anyone think that terry bozzio sucks, his playing is incredible!
Well Bozzio’s solos seem like 25% playing and 75% making faces like he’s in pain.
oh to be in that room...
Dave Weckl looks like Daniel Craig "James Bond" lol
Moustros del rock.... como entro tanto talento en esa sala?
0:30 Mike's reaction broke my heart. He knows that Dave is a drumset virtuoso and doesn't think he isn't that good compared to Dave. But guess what? Dave is better than any of us and other famous drummers and there are other drummers that are better than Dave. Comparing people is just stupid. So yeah, Mike is an amazing drummer nevertheless.
Just not a good soloist drummer. He’s a great prog drummer with amazing chops to spice up a song, but for playing a solo, he’s meh at best.
Their faces at 0:12
R.I.P Neil Peart😢
I love the honesty.
Thanks for letting this be "real". :)
I like how they actually give their opinions on the cymbals instead of saying "EVERYTHING IS AMAZING!!!!!!"
i like how well neil fits in with these guys
The best drummers are those hwo play for the MUSIC even when soloing. And they keep time. And the listen to the other guys in the band and acenting them. Music is questions and answers. And a good drummer never feels that he need to show off. He play for the music.... These guys are the best in their styles.... Enough said....
Really enjoyed watching all of these videos. And I'm not even a drummer.
I miss these days, they're ridiculously entertaining lol
To all the people ranting at Portnoy. Yes, technically he is not as fast or advanced as a lot of other virtuoso's like Weckl or Mangini. But he sais that in his video's as well. He always focussed on the musical side of drumming and no matter how you comment on his drumming, in Dream Theater he does an amazing job and he has inspired me a lot just like Weckl. He has ideas that nobody else had.
sabain is legendary!, full stop.
Terry Bozzio: Don't even look at it. *inside me cries*
Very good player, I like it.
Dave Weckl "You have 65,000 cymbals on your kit", Neil Peart: "None of which sounds like a cymbal" hahahaha
just wondering... how many times have they rehearsed this dialogue?
when i hear neil talk, im just thinking in my mind: "does mike even understand what neil is trying to articulate to him?" neil is such an intelligent dude.
Terry seems to be getting the short end of the stick from the other players, but it’s all good hearted. ;)
I'm pretty sure it comes from a place of mutual respect. Plus, Terry wouldn't have lasted very long in Zappa's band if he didn't have a sense of humor ; )
"Neil Ellwood Peart"
September 12, 1952 --- January 7, 2020
"A Farewell to a King"
Bozzio and Peart absolutely the Best.
At 1:40 , Makes me cry, what a human MAN He was, NEIL was, so humble, so , I Can’t describe it , sorry, but, being among such a great players and being what He was , THE GREATEST DRUMMER ON EARTH , and he kept an attitude of appreciation of what Those Big Guys learned from Him ...
Just an idea. Why not use the time you have to Practice, instead of thinking "who can blow who away"?
When Weckl said to him “great playing man” Portnoy was like “I sucked”
How so many Legends one one room
Who does Tony Braunagel play with? I'm not familar.
Arrogant or honest. Not everybody is the same and outgoing. His personality is maybe less talkative and extravagant but he surely is nice at his own way. He gave me one of his sticks, an autograph and i could take a picture with him. He wast that entheusiastic but he did it and jeez, he is great in his own way and he is one of the most amazing jazz drummers ever. Yes that is what he does and he is less diverse but his sound is out of this world.
How did they get so many Legends one one room
Martin Perez they all endorse Sabian
Neil Peart......r.i.p.....so sad to see him there alive,talkin'.... and know that he died a few days ago....some yrs later from that video.
I was told that by the guy who arranged the clinic.
I got the aero cause it goes to 11!!
It's like the summit of the five kage
What a scary audience to be playing drums in front of O_O
that´s the heaven!!!
I rofl'd so hard when I read these comments, it's like a bunch of 11-year-olds arguing about their ice-hockey heroes. "Mario Lemieux's stick is also a guitar AND a rectal thermometer!"
Seriously guys, go get a grip and stop comparing godlike but different people with each other. They're not even trying to be the same so I think comparing them is not only a waste of time and effort but also creates totally unnecessary anger where there's not supposed to be anger.
0:26, MP :[off camera] gonna shit my pants gonna shit my pants DONT SAY I PLAY GOOD!
0:29, DW :great playing!
0:30 MP :oh shit!
it's not really a matter of competition...i think competition at this level is mostly in the minds of certain listeners
mike has been longing for a 20 inch that feels good :S
Lmfao. It goes to 11. XD
Best classic musician's movie ever.
@85Aheadstix: Andrenalie Mob.... and btw, MP doesn't play "intense metal". The best metal you'll get from him is on the Train Of Thought and Systematic Chaos albums.
He's not a "metal" drummer. He's a Prog-rock/metal drummer.
@winduapiang and thats from neil peart...........
"great playin' man, also... (the next summer i'll be teaching near your home, you should call me)" xD
I'm sorry people, I just think Sabian's roster of endorsers is just insane. Weckl, Mayer, Bozzio, DeJohnette, Zoro, Peart, Haake, the list goes and and on. I've tried all cymbals in a lot of stores. Heard all the big brands in almost every setting. Sabian wins hands down for me, just almost no contest. Zildjian has a little weight left within Jazz, but for the rest I'm not using another brand anytime soon. That's not hype, that's not ego, that's musical quality to me.
It goes to 11.
_"I've done some nasty things to cymbals."_
Terry Bozzio
I wish Dave Weckl would tell me my playing was awesome.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX Contrary to what you might think there are quite a lot of things to do on a drumkit that are a lot harder and take a lot more musical finesse than playing Dream Theater songs. And if we're equating being a great drummer with mastering a certain style than I guess we can lump in a whole bunch of more drummers in the "great drummer" category. Portnoy IS a great drummer and he is indeed very good in what he does. But overall as a drummer he doesn't impress me that much.
@Redspy27 As musicians, it is our job to practice the necessary material to get where we want to be. Mike, along with all the drummers you mentioned, have done just that. Saying that a drummer isn't good (in most cases) is like telling him/her that he/she has the wrong taste in music. This is immature, and shows lack of education. Now, I'm not trashing you personally, I'm just stating a point.
sooooo....this video doesnt even show the stadium ride being played....
Why would you think that?
These guys are just great, of course they're not in a competition, but it's not that difficult for a real Musician to spot who is technically better and the best here. There're abysmal differences among them.
to be fair, cymbal tightness can affect everything, sound, the way it feels, plus, if he is paying them to set up his kit, why should he pay someone for doing it wrong?
How does it feel to get that kind of compliment from Weck, Mike? ;)
@85Aheadstix: NO MORE COFFEE FOR YOU.
His sound is out of this world?, PAH!, hes a general rock drummer compared to Bozzio and Peart.
When I first saw this vid a few months back I literally got embarrassed for Mike. He knew it was borderline condescending because he knows how great Weckl is and that he's eons below Weckl's level. It had to have been like a slow motion punch to the forehead that started in Florida and picked up momentum in Carolina only to land mid forehead in Patrionizationville. Mike surely seemed uncomfortable as if to say, Dave, please, dude, don't. LoL
Everyone is way below Weckls level
Except maybe, just maybe, Dave Weckl is actually a nice, open-minded guy who enjoys other people's styles of playing as well and was giving Mike a genuine compliment.
Traduza essa porra !! pelo amor de Deus ! kkkk
1:30
Bozzio was verbally shitted on. lol
ok ok, can't take it anymore. There goes my child comment!! haha
Four words to you guys (and ladies) :
"Mr. Weckl is Bored."
@danceofeternity3824 Well no shit, so whats your point?, your just backing my argument up.
@Redspy27 I think you are underestimating Mike's abilities. You don't get viewed as such a great player by NOT being such a great player. I don't find that each of the players you listed BLOW Mike away, but merely portray different musicality. Either way, I find it ridiculous to call drummers "overrated" and to say "this guy is better than that guy".
Add Chuck Norris in this vid and you can rule the world!!!
No More coffee for you...
Pfft! the professor cares not of the opinions of drummers below him.
Weckl being one.
0:30 bitch, i am fabulous!!!
People who keep on bashing these drummers, specially MP, should put up vidz that they can do better.
Mike Portnoy = multi awarded Prog-rock drummer and youngest HoF inductee in the Modern Drummer + Dave Weckl compliments him ( you dont hear Dave compliment metal drummers )
Accomplishments speak for him. So, if you can do better, post it... Or STFU.
That's not the point! every drummer in that room sounds different from the other. everyone plays different styles in different bands or genres. if you think that among them you can find the "real" Musician, I'd tell you something. try to put Dave Weckl in place of Neil Peart in Rush, or even Mike Portnoy in place of Dave Weckl with Chick Corea, i don't think that Dave would play with the same Peart's groove in rush, or even Portnoy to play some fusion stuff with Chick.
They're all different. All great.
@InsaneDrumer18 No no, Peart=The GOD, the others demi Gods.
Thats Sabian for you. Actually including the artists' unfavorable critiques towards the cymbals too. That's some honesty that you won't see in other unmentionable companieZ.
click show comment to go on a journy
@XxStrongDrums1996xX Oh and as for drummer's who can blow him away? Jojo Mayer, Virgil Donati, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Dennis Chambers, Tony Royster jr, aaaand I could continue. Anyone who says those drummers just have "licks" or "fast hands" has no idea how much musical diversity these guys put in a performance. Portnoy's a great musician but showing a mastery in one or two styles does not make you one of the best drummers in the world imo.
@Redspy27 Stop hating man. I'll GUARANTEE that you know 2 drummers (MAYBE) that could "blow Portnoy away". You seem to forget that being a good drummer doesn't mean having the most licks, having the best groove, having the fastest hands, etc. It's about mastering the style that you enjoy. Portnoy has gone far beyond that. How can you say that someone is overrated when he/she could play a Dream Theater set flawlessly for 25 years? Get an education man.
@metalmike83 I agree!, i think the only ones that have mastered it all are Peart and Bozzio, the others are kinda overrated in my opinion.
Speed? There's nothing impressively quick about Portnoy's playing.
Weckl could lose an arm tomorrow and would be able to replicate Portnoy's parts an hour after the amputation.
I don't know why you'd believe Weckl couldn't play Portnoy's numbskull odd-time rock or his ad nauseum quads.
