I think this would have been a better ending for Ryder than him being a traitor, his missions always benefited the Groove Street Families, and he was quite rattled when CJ came back, unlike Smoke that was nice to make CJ gain his trust.
That was because Initially the plan of rockstar was to keep Ryder till the end of the game but his voice actor MC Eiht left recording that's why there was no other option except to kill him.......Also notice that in the mission in which he died his dialogues were formed by the previously recorded words by mc eiht by editing

@@KingLee8977 there is something online somewhere where they mentioned that Ryder had a totally different ending in GTA but the voice actor quit and because of that they had to kill the character off early. So they are technically partially right. But not 100%
