As an arsenal fan i must say. Mainoo didnt get on the ball as much but that is to be expected vs liverpool, no midfielder ever gets to hold the ball vs them. Its because of their gegenpress and also because liverpool plays blitz attacks directly on to their front 3. Even ødegaard doesnt get on the ball vs them, its very clear in the stats where he has the lowest nr of passes vs them of the season.
So that doesnt take anything away from mainoo at all, what matters is you only get a few moments to shine vs liverpool, its about grasping those and he did that.
Mainoo is a legit prodigy, the type united needs to build a team around for the future. I think he could shine in a proper ten haag possession oriented team in a playmaker role. But its not clear to me whether ETH will get to finish this project for that to happend. I think united should stick with ETH, he still hasnt had the backing he needs, i dont think he got the players he wants yet.
United needs to strenghten that spine of the team, he needs center mids that are quick enough to play a high line and good enough on the ball to play out from the back. He also desperately needs some physicality and legs in that midfield to protect mainoo. Bruno runs but he is all over the place and he doesnt win duels, casemiro doesnt run at all.. what they need is a roy keane type box to box and a dominant playmaker type as cdm.. that would give mainoo some freedom. But that means bruno has to go.

We know Mainoo is a baller and he’s only making 14 successful passes. That speaks volumes about our system and how passers in the team are either getting bypassed or our players are really just that shit.
