    Another good safety tip is to solder a ground wire to the PCB for your negative meter lead. Then you can use only one hand for the positive probe to measure voltages. This could avoid an electrical shock travelling across your heart from one hand to the other, potentially killing you. Also build a simple 240v series lamp, connected in the live to avoid anything serious happening if you accidentally short live and neutral, the lamp will simply illuminate and limit the current.

    Gloves my dude. GLOVES. Saved my life once upon a time. Not with PSU's but with house electrical in the wall. Thought I had it turned off at the breaker box (and I did actually) but it was not run through that specific spot and was still live. Cut the line and shot fireworks and melted my tool. Thankfully I had insulated tools and gloves.

  • @JonnyFix
    @JonnyFix Před rokem +5

    Heatsinks on the primary side will be live when plugged in, can touch those while holding it by the edges, also be careful of lengths of solder and wick snaking their way toward things and accidentally coming into contact as seen the potential for at 19:20. When you've never worked on high voltage stuff the awareness of such things takes a while to achieve. Good job tho!

Accidently hit a load bar in the consumer unit with my hand a few years ago. 240v AC with 80amps of how you doing (my main input breaker is 80amps in the house). Luckily I was sitting on the side of my sofa (I was doing repairs on the unit, replacing a burnt out RCD) so I had my feet off the floor and it was only with one hand so it didn't really hurt me apart from sting a bit

    Phil, I agree with your warnings. Capacitors should be discharged prior to touching anything regardless of when the last time power was applied. I know from first hand experience that caps can charge off anything INCLUDING FLUORESCENT LIGHTS. So anyone reading this PLEASE discharge and verify your caps every time before proceeding.

  • @lordjohnpp
    @lordjohnpp Před rokem +7

    For discharge you can use regular light bulb. It is faster, secure and you can literally see if there is a charge left in the capacitor :) Also optocouplers are very unlikely to be bad - actually I never had one bad yet. ICs also rarely go bad by themselves if they do not drive directly primary winding of the transformer. Usually the issues are with mosfets that are driving primary winding, capacitors or resistors and diodes on controlling/feedback circuit. This case you have with broken transformer is a problem only on this model of power supplies. I never met other case such this one. Obviously bad design.

    Hi @TheCod3r
    I have a query.
    In this video, you mentioned at 4:35 that the input volts of the power supply is 244V. So does it cause damage to the console? because Playstation recommends using it between 220V - 240V.
    I am also getting the main AC voltage around 242V to 245V. I am a bit concerned on that. Shall I have to or not?

    Hi TheCod3r, how are you?
    First I would like to thank you for the beautiful tips and techniques that you show in your videos, I learned a lot watching you! Congratulations. I wanted to ask you, are you aware of the PS5 problem with the giant thermal pad that is causing a wedge in the cooler, causing greater pressure in a sector, squeezing so much that it makes all the liquid metal come out of a part of the DIE. The Brazilian version 1014A is coming with this thermal pad, we are all without an exact direction of what to do, if we remove it, if we reduce it... Do you have any information about this problem? Thanks!!! 😁👍

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  Před rokem +2

      Thanks bud, much appreciated. I'm not aware of that to be honest, but in the UK we have several revisions, and some of them have pads whereas some don't. To me it seems like it's there to reduce warping on the board but I'm not sure if that's the cause of it or not

    • @RetroElectronicRepair

    Learn about car audio amplifiers and then you will know power supplies...what usually goes bad is the mosfets, & then the drive ic's, & zener diodes, & resisters

    Had a power supply after ps5 being dropped. The transformer ripped the pads.
    Didint bother to discharge and got zapped with full power 🤣🤣🤣.
    What an experience 😂😂😂
    Ps. Decided to put on gloves after the second zapp😜

    Love the usual content but my personal belief is never make video's about PSU repair. It dont matter how many times you say don't do this it will fall on deaf ears with some and plant a seed. For the cost of a new one its really not worth injury or even death.
