    第34回サロマ湖100kmウルトラマラソン
    I attempted to finish the Saroma 100k Ultramarathon - June 30 2019.
    This was my 6th attempt at the race and (spoiler alert...) I didn't make it.
    Ran as far as the 89km point but by then the 91km cut off gate had already closed.
    But it was a great day. I met a lot of lovely people: runners, volunteers and the people of northern Hokkaido.

    John, you get a metal🏅 in my book for just attempting a 100k.
    You should not beat yourself up, you did do 88k which is fantastic!
    Congratulations 🤗

    Great run and so close to finishing. Please give it another go next year I do like my annual dose of the Samira 100. It’s such a tough race but with right training I am sure you can do it!

    Thanks for the video mate.
    I spotted my wife a couple of times. She ran near you for a while.
    Your video showed me a bit of what she went through.
    Thanks again

      @@Jaqaroo She finished the 100ks!
      However, she was 1 minute and 30 seconds too late for the medal. can you believe that?

      @Jaqaroo  Před 4 lety +1

      Nooooooo! Oh that's hard, that's disappointing. But she had the satisfaction of running and finishing 100k, and you can't take that away.

    So close, John! Fantastic effort. You absolutely should nail down a 100k finish next year. Were those salt tabs right before salted watermelon? That would have wrecked me. Hey, what a lovely woman at 17 min. Thanks for sharing! Great vid as always. Interested to see what version of Hokas - if any - that you wind up in.

    • @Jaqaroo
      @Jaqaroo  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Cole! Yes, salt tabs, electrolytes - the brand is Saltstick Caps, do you know them? I was trying to reduce my intake of sugary sports drinks, which after a while tends to upset my stomach. I think they also help reduce muscle cramps.
      I was actually going to ask you about the Hokas. I was thinking the Clifton 5.

    • @ski999
      @ski999 Před 5 lety

      @@Jaqaroo With regard to salt, I've moved away from tabs. I hydrate with the one of the "superfood" berry flavor powders I drink every day, then only eat peanut butter Clif bars and vanilla energy gels for the rest of my calories. I rarely race, though. I spread my minimum 80 miles/week out evenly. My 2 cents isn't worth much because I only do 50k max. at a time, which you can do on a baloney sandwich, really. As for Hokas, you have many more options because you're lighter and faster than me. My go-to shoes are the Bondi 4 and Bondi 6. I stockpiled a bunch of Bondi 4, but then love the lighter mesh uppers of the 6. They're probably way too mushy for you. I have two pair of the Clifton 4, which I really like (the Clifton 1 was over-rated, IMO, and the 2 was narrow for me). They're lighter than the Bondi, and have better grip on easy trails. They changed the rocker for the Clifton 5 - some people love it, while others are "meh". My favorite knock around shoes, though, are the Clayton 2. But I'm too heavy on my feet, and only wear them for interval work - and for my everyday job (photographing sports, where I pretty much run up and down the sidelines). My wife tells me my Claytons are the only Hokas that don't appear to be medical prescription shoes, LOL. My trail shoes are the Challenger ATR 2, but they're a pain in the butt because I have to use the heel lockdown holes. Jeez, I'm like a freaking Kardashian with my two dozen pairs of shoes ... Bottom line: def try on the Cliftons, but they're going to weigh more than you're used to. They are a plush ride, for sure, but there's a bit of a price to pay for all that softness. I'm sure you know the Ginger Runner is the review guru and always spot-on. Good luck and happy Hoka hunting!

      @Jaqaroo  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Cole, thanks for the information. So, yesterday I went to the sports shop intending to try on, and if they felt right, get me a pair of the Clifton 5s. But they didn't have my size. So I tried the 6's, they felt great, so I got them. Haven't actually run in them yet, just waiting for a break in the rain. The Bondis look...big, medical devices...LOL. I should probably have a few pairs in rotation, but I don't. I buy a new pair, wear them until they are starting to wear down a bit and then buy some more.

    • @ski999
      @ski999 Před 5 lety

      @@Jaqaroo Hey, happy the Cliftons feel right for you. I'm not too proud to grab store returns of like-new Hokas off eBay (you can tell from the marked outsole). Lemme guess: orange and black or the snazzy red ... I'm gonna say you bought the red pair. BTW, I get 600+ road miles on Cliftons and Bondis. Run fast! F the rainy season!
