One of my all time favorites, glad you enjoyed it!
Here's a couple of titbits.
- The band were supposed to look like their depiction on the "Around the world in a day" album cover. But if you look up that cover, you'll find that Prince was supposed to have platinum blonde hair. Heck, look at the animation, the guy depicted has blond hair. But the dying of Prince's hair went so badly that he cut it all off and wore a wig.
- Again with the album cover, Prince is seen wearing that blue suit with the clouds, which is what he wears in this music video. But that suit and the white guitar matched so well that that instrument got the nickname "Cloud guitar"
- Note the guy wearing the white robes sitting in front of the Piano? That's none other than Germs/Nirvana/ Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear. Smear was doing odd jobs just to keep himself fed. For this music video, he was supposed to do the dance routine everybody does here, but he couldn't get it together. So he was sent home, until Prince spotted him and, although It's doubtful that Prince was aware of the Germs, recognized a star instantly, had him brought back in. Pat said that Prince liked his hair, and told the camera crew to have him in clear view for the duration of the song. He was sat by the piano.

Appreciate your honesty! In admitting that it didn't knock you out. Youre Always keeping it real. But you might try re-watching it on your own sometime. (hate to say it, but you missed a couple good spots, lookin away, distracted. It might work more, if you watch it all the way thru) No joke, it's considered one of his Top 3 most favorite. (or Easily in the Top 5)

Easily one of his best storytelling songs. The animation that they had in the background was icing on the cake.
This was written on the purple rain tour, he was burnt out from purple rain, he was just going to put out a record, not promote it. "Put it in the back of the record store, the fans will find it" then the record company fell in love w the song and said " we need a video, we need a tour"
He hated his haircut, he said he looked like a pixie
This song was actually originally written on the 1999 tour , this song dates back to 1982. There’s a circulating rehearsal session where he is playing Raspberry Beret from 1982. Different sound with guitar solo. Very different than what’s here.

Weeell.. I must admit that I’m not that fan with this song. The problem is not the song itself, but the fact that the whole album was an instant love at first hearing, and here are two of my favourite songs ( at the present time, it may vary, I’m still on my discovery path...), which are Condition of the heart ( that almost progressive intro is wow) and Temptation ( which was already reviewed here: killer vocals, fmkiller guitar killer piano.. basically killer everything)
So in comparison with them, Raspberry beret can’t win.
But must say that : who else cound actually wear this funny suit and still look freakin’ cute in it? Not many people I guess. 😂
And the line " I was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before" always crack me up. It summarize so perfectly my first bullshit job.. and actually every single job I have done since. Hilariously accurate. Sadly never ever met a cute man with a nice red hat.
So to me it’s a ” nice, funny, playfull ... but not favourite song". I really tend to prefer those that weren’t fit to be hits. Or maybe it’s juste because they were much more aired and therefore sound not as original as the less known ones, to me.
