Benjamin is just darling, and what a great idea for your kids. Can you tell us what type of butterfly house, nectar and whatever else you mentioned you’re going to be purchasing or have already? Never thought of that and it would be a great addition to my garden, but there’s so many choices So the type you have would be helpful.

This is so precious 🥺 Benjamin is so cute he kills me! Also. Idea for the stepping stones- instead of painting them you can let Benjamin draw on them with chalk. They’ll probably get cleaned off every so often anyway, so he’ll have a clean slate after a few days. Also gives him a little place to draw among the flowers. 🌻

I saw the colorful birdbath with butterflies on it and thought for sure that would be the centerpiece. A little solar fountain in that would be perfect. A butterfly garden is a great thing to do for a kids garden. Watching Benjamin shop for flowers for his garden was priceless!

The heat must be getting to me, making me think of cooler days... All I could think while watching this was how pretty that area would be with a Christmas tree in the center, and garland on the outside of the fence. 🎄❄️⛄

Off topic, but I'm always impressed with how put together Laura looks while planting in this heat. I would be slopping around in old shorts and a tank top, no make up, and my hair scraped back in a sloppy bun.
I always think that. I don't know how Laura works in the heat in jeans and long sleeve shirt over another shirt. I work in shorts and short sleeve or sleeveless shirt.
Most of us would do the same. I understand she likes looking modest but lighter colored clothing would be more sensible.
I know this is a temporary space and so annuals are mostly being used, but it is worth mentioning for everyone interested in putting in a butterfly garden, that it is so worth putting in plants to not only feed the adult butterflies, but also ones that will feed the caterpillars. Look up native butterfly plants for your state and consider adding those natives in. If nothing else, plant milkweed for the Monarchs! 💗
She mentioned that she had milkweed seedlings but they need to be hardened off.
I was also hoping for most host plants for the caterpillars! It looks like eastern OR has an interesting selection of swallowtails and they would need host plants different from the nectar plants she just plants.

Benjamin and Samantha Grace hit the parents lottery when it comes to Laura and Aaron. Aaron seems to be pretty funny and laid back, Laura seems to mirror her mother. Can two children get any luckier than having Laura's mother as a grandmother and Laura as their mom with the same temperament as her mother.
What a sweet thing for Laura to create for her son. Totally jealous, but in a good way! 🤭

That’s what I’ve thought too! Their children are so lucky and will grow to be the amazing people they are meant to be. When you align with nature this frequently, you are in a state of peace and joy. What an incredible family. 💜

It IS hard! I let my 7yo daughter decide placement of my impatiens in my window boxes this year because I just wanted it done. I usually overthink everything. I’m so happy with how everything has turned out.

Three year-olds are awesome indeed! Benjamin has such enthusiasm and his banter with his mama as he selected and placed his flowers was so precious. It’s always so sweet to listen to little ones chatter. I absolutely love the picket fence - what a wonderful idea! Perfect size for a little man.

You could put fairy lights on the fence that would look super cool. Also you could use your and Benjamin hands and foot prints on the blocks for whimsical look.

Oh my goodness, how precious this is. Brings me back to when my 3 children were growing up, they each had their own tiny garden. I’m now 73 and my children are all into gardening. I planted the seed, just like my mother did with me and my 5 siblings, we’re all still avid gardeners. This is turning out sooooo cute! I wonder how an arbor over the entry would look… like maybe using pliable branches. The center support could be made out of a long piece of pvc bent from one side to the other and fixed onto either side. Paint it black or dark brown and wrap the limbs around it. 💁🏼♀️

Just came in from working in my flowerbeds and garden. Living in Pennsylvania and gardening means I get out before the sun is up to beat the heat. Especially this week 🥵. Now to get breakfast and watch for some more garden inspiration. I am thinking about doing this for my daughter next year. She loves butterflies as well.
I'm in mid NY and do the same. It has been so hot and humid this week so I'm working in the morning and evening. Got a strong thunderstorm 3 times yesterday so I'm not dragging a hose around today.

This reminds me so much of Beatrix Potter's garden. I don't even have my own kids (but I do have sweet nieces and nephews) and I want to add one to the cottage garden in my landscape. Can you imagine tucking in a few small pumpkins in the fall? I die. And I love that you are doing this amongst the chaos of rebuilding and not sitting it out and waiting.

An idea for lights,.. possibly string around the fence in a little swag design. Would light up the area softly.

I’m so glad you thought of a shallow dish for the butterflies. All creatures need water so it’s really important to include some water for the beneficial insects in the garden and a shallow dish, you might want to include a bunch of little stones or a large one so they have something to hold on in case they fall in the water.
Benjamin’s garden is one of my favorites that you have done, so sweet. You and Benjamin need to make a bug house on a post and it would look so sweet popping up out of the flowers.
I love swallowtail butterflies and they love my dill patch! They also love my fennel.
If you don't already have a Cape Plumbago, they love that one too, nectar source for Swallowtail. Pretty sky blue or white flower clusters (kind of reminiscent of hydrangea blooms)!
This has to be the most precious video ever. My children are all grown up and now I have grand babies. Two boys and a girl. When my kids were little they would help me plant our vegetable garden and all summer long they would help water and harvest. Beautiful memories you are creating with your sweet babies.

This took me back as a child going to a local family owned garden shop and selecting plants and flowers with my late mom. Now I look back and remember what we planted that has grown with time. I picture her in the garden as she was always tending it. Thanks Laura, you not only inspire but you also bring us fond memories. Benjamin, will remember so much.

I love taking my son to the local garden centers! He’ll be 3 in august. I love seeing his fascination with all the colors and he loves any excuse to dig in the dirt. We take nightly walks around the yard to check our flowers and learn how flowers and plants grow. He’s my little helper!
I absolutely love this little fenced “room” of flowers. So intimate and the perfect size for Benjamin and the space. Great area to sit in the evening and enjoy while Benjamin chases the butterflies. I had a 3.5 high water rock fountain feature I put in the corner of mine for a drinking feature for the butterflies. I picked it up at a garage sale for 10 bucks and it’s so perfect.
How special that area is for a child! Also, I just want to say THANK YOU for all the time you spend setting up cameras, umbrellas, positioning, etc. so that we can view the process and progress "in real time".
If you add fennel and parley to your garden, you will have host plants for swallowtails. Glad you are including milkweed to host monarchs
So sweet! It is a charming little flower garden. To make it a truly butterfly friendly garden you need to add some host plants as well. Determine the butterflies you have in your area and add host plants for their larvae. Benjamin would really enjoy watching the life cycle of the larvae to butterfly.
