Gamblegate: The final Tory scandal of this government? | LBC analysis

- The former Justice Secretary and Conservative candidate Robert Buckland has split from the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary by calling for those involved in the election betting scandal to be suspended.
Speaking to LBC this morning, the Home Secretary admitted that the ongoing betting scandal is “frustrating” but has denied calls for Rishi Sunak to suspend those being investigated.
A string of people with links to either the Conservative Party or No10 are alleged to have placed bets on the timing of the July 4 election before Mr Sunak announced it.
This includes Nick Mason, chief data officer for the Conservative party, who is being investigated for bets placed on the date of the election, according to the Sunday Times.
LBC understands that Mason has taken a leave of absence from his role while the matter is investigated by the Gambling Commission. He denies any wrongdoing.
“It’s of course frustrating when you have conversations about inappropriate action,” James Cleverly told LBC’s Sunday with Lewis Goodall.
But he did not agree with calls for those being investigated to be suspended, saying that it is "right" to wait for the outcome of the investigation.
Carol Vorderman wonders if this is the 'final nail in the coffin' for the Tory party.

Tories lining their own pockets? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you...
Amazing its taken this long for a large chunk of people to realise. Tory voters really did live in their own world.
Yet everyone seems to ignore that Nigel Firage pushed Brexit purely for the same reasons, he could profit off it personally.
Fake news media! Oh wait....
I'm shocked but not surprised.

The fact Sunak has not suspended any of them is not suprising what do you expect from someone who worked at Goldman Sachs.
Sunak's always been weak - this is more proof.
Sunak is very weak.

The guy said the Tory party is on life support, let’s turn the machine off on July 4th.
They have no morals
It isn't just about fair play, it's about treating the office and responsibilities they have been fortunate enough to have with respect. They regard the ordinary people with disdain. Pigs in the trough.
Labour should immediately ban all kinds of dodgey financial activities for MP.
- Ban all (paid) second jobs (allow, unpaid, refresher/certification work).
- Ban jobs in industries related to their government service for one full parliament after they leave.
- Make all earnings and wealth a matter public record (like Norway does for ALL citizens).
- Ban share ownership. Forced sale proceeds put into government bonds while they serve)
Any ONE of these would guarantee that Nigel Farage immediately quits his seat
What they should do and what they will do are worlds apart, actually what they say they will do and what they will do are even further apart. This current lot do not deserve the title of "Labour party".

Sunak made his money by betting against RBOS on the basis of insider information. A file was passed to the police and they did nothing. However, we were offered land with planning permission at a very cheap price and told to keep quiet in compensation.
Starmer should politely remind the gambling commission and betting industry who is in charge of gambling regulations for the next 5-10 years.

They really do sound like a dodgy firm of solicitors and accountants don't they, but of course that's what they are...
If the Tories get ONE seat, that will be TWO too many !
The issue here is the Right Wing of the Conservatives. The EU Referendum was meant to quieten them, but it emboldened them. By definition, the Right are selfish and destructive, and their philosophies do not align with philosophies that benefit the general population. The Conservatives have always been ‘the nasty party’, but nasty in a traditional schoolmaster way - as in, playing fair to the point of it being irritating, and even unkind but, importantly, with future success in mind. The populism model - fuelled by social media - plays into the hands of the right and people like Farage. The Conservatives have moved this way and Labour have filled the void left behind. Now we have one major party - Labour - standing on moderate principles. The Conservatives are aiming to attract the dimwits and they’ll realise that there are fewer of them than they think.
