- On the evening of 27 April 1993, aircraft of the Zambian Air Force crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Libreville, Gabon. The flight was carrying most of the Zambian national football team to a FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Senegal in Dakar. All 25 passengers and five crew members were killed. The official investigation concluded that the pilot had shut down the wrong engine following an engine fire. It also found that pilot fatigue and a faulty instrument had contributed to the accident.
This was a really sad time in Zambias history.

Am Ugandan . It's sad you didn't see these men play football. They were really good players who were a beauty to watch. Kelvin Mutale had pace. Chikalakwala was a nightmare of defenders. Timothy Mwitwa was such an intelligent player on the ball and once he beat a defender he could move very fast. Defenders were left chasing shadows. Whiteson Changwe was a rock at the left-full back and very hard to beat just like right full back John Soko. Makinka and Mwila were equally talented midfielders . All these players were very very good
