  • Hello! When I shared this video on Instagram, the thing that caught everyone’s eye wasn’t the huge platter, but the tiny little DIY tool for cutting the slab along the form. So here’s a tutorial making the platter and demonstrating the use of that nifty little tool.

    My wishlist for content:
. Share your selling experience in terms of the kind of items that have more or less takers.
. Care with 1) drying, 2) firing, 3) glazing of items
. Discipline with cleaning of the work area and implements
    4. Discipline with learning and experimenting
    5. Tools, forms and glazes that you love using
I can think of more but these might just help.

Hi Jaspreet, I’ve never gone beyond 8” for my work for the fear of the item warping. It was helpful to see your take with a large platter. A question: when do you decide that a platter needs a foot ring and whether it needs 1 or 2?

Keeping weight on the pieces you want to keep flat is the most important thing. Fill old socks with cheap cat litter and put them on your plates. They both add the weight needed to keep them flat as well as absorb some moisture. Dry slowly! The feet should be added to any area that is aprox 3” away from the other foot. If there is room for it to warp put a foot there.

My apologies for the late response- I was on a little break.
I agree, warping is a real pain! But since I weigh down my pieces and dry very slowly under a plastic, it’s usually not too bad. In terms of deciding on the footring- there are quite a few considerations. Explaining them here may be a bit tricky so I’ll be sending out my Tip Tuesday email on this topic tomorrow and will try to cover all the aspects I want to talk about.
